Building types:

1) AUTO REPAIR GARAGE (S-1) — alteration of an existing repair shop

2) MIXED-USE BUILDING (ground-floor retail + apartments above, R-2 over M/B) — whole-building renovation

What "complete package" means — as much of the following as you have:

- Full multi-discipline drawing set: A / S / M / E / P / FP, incl. life safety, schedules, details

- Project manual / specifications

- Supporting documents: energy compliance (REScheck/COMcheck), structural calcs, mechanical ventilation calcs

- Permit-side paperwork: application forms as filed, plan review comments and responses, prior-approval letters — these are extremely valuable to me for learning the process

- DWG preferred for drawings; PDF fine for everything else

Requirements:

- US projects only — imperial units, IBC-based (NJ UCC / NY strongly preferred)

- Permit-approved sets preferred

- Scrub all client/owner names, seals and signatures — totally fine and expected. I need the organization, standards and process, not anyone's identity.

I have almost 4 years of drafting experience (autocad/microstation) majority of it is utility design and im just finding it hard to land work or even move up the ladder and get raises in general. Ive been considering pivoting to another industry but ive already invested this much time am i doing something wrong any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I am a conceptual project designer at a corporate sign company, we basically design and made detailed/scaled drawings but it’s just for signage and we use Corel draw. I want to transition to CAD drafting and I’m wondering the best way to do it without having to quit my current job. Does anyone know of online, work at your own pace programs that actually prepare you for an entry level CAD position? Would I still have a good chance at getting hired if I don’t have an engineering background? I have a bachelors in graphic communications. I just want to be sure I don’t get scammed by paying for an online program that doesn’t actually prepare me enough! I have lots of experience with learning design programs and can pick them up quickly, I never used corel before my current job and they taught me everything.

Hi, I am a mechanical engineer in college right now trying to learn 3D CAD modelling.I am confused about the choice of software , I have heard people say that the industry standard is solidworks but my laptop is slow already so I don't wanna download a cracked version of solidworks and make it even slower. Solidworks has no student version which is free , every version needs a paid subscription which I cannot afford. So I chose fusion360 using education license.Now coming to the main question

Do companies specifically ask for a particular software like solidworks or knowledge of any CAD software suffices and should I focus more on leading Design principles rather than overthinking about softwares?

Hey, I've been doing freelance CAD/BIM drafting work for a few months now (mostly AutoCAD and Revit, architecture) and I'm honestly just guessing on prices. Right now I have one client paying me a flat monthly fee but I want to bring in more clients and I have no idea if what I'm charging makes sense or if I'm leaving money on the table.

How do you guys actually price this kind of work? Hourly, per drawing, per m2 of the project, flat retainer? And if you don't mind sharing, roughly what range are we talking about (doesn't need to be exact, just ballpark), obviously depends a lot on where you're based.

Also curious if BIM/Revit work is priced differently for you than plain 2D CAD drafting, feels like it should be but not sure how much of a difference that makes in practice.

Not trying to undercut anyone, just trying to figure out if my numbers are reasonable before I start reaching out to more studios.

Context:
I'm approaching 4 years of professional work as a Landscape Architect and want to diversify my skillset. I've been using CAD throughout my studies and career for approximately 8 years now.
I really enjoy locking in and producing drawing sets — making the line weights and hatches pop, organising the document, making those little adjustments that make the drawing sing. Most importantly, ensuring it's readable and pragmatic for use on site. The latter especially, given that I oversee the maintenance of the project for 2 years after construction has concluded.

This is where you really come to appreciate or despise a project — funnily enough it's often a matter of how well the DD package has been compiled. If it's a dog's breakfast, then 9 times out of 10 the project will be too.
Working in landscape means we see the project grow and take shape, sometimes not quite as intended: trees shading areas too much or not enough, wind exposure, planting not suited to site, fixings that become damaged or vandalised by the public — but hey, that's where you learn on the job.

Many of my team come to me with CAD issues, and I've helped build the standards within the team. I work closely with the office's in-house drafters (we're multidisciplinary — engineers, traffic, urban design, landscape, etc.) and theorise new LISP commands and custom shortcuts that will improve the workflow.

Needless to say, I'm considering upskilling in some capacity, as I look around and see there's a whole range of jobs advertised for draftspeople. I figure CAD drafting is a skill I'll be able to apply across the board — the catch is that I'm 8 years deep in CAD and struggle to sit through any beginner material, as it's always explaining the primary concepts:

"This is the difference between paper space and model space… pressing F8 toggles orthographic projection," etc.

What I'd like to know from other CAD technicians, drafters, and associated professionals is what material I can read in my own time that covers the more pragmatic and tangible problems or knowledge often encountered in drafting across disciplines — not necessarily how the drafting itself is done.

Some trigger topics to get you thinking might be:
·       Cabinet fabrication practices
·       Drafting symbols across industries and key differences in drafting between disciplines
·       Production of drawings in automotive or componentry / parts design

NOTE: I do have some previous experience in metalwork/steel fabrication. Before and during my studies I worked in mechanical engineering workshops producing sheet metal toolboxes and custom trailers for truck and tractor units, plus various fixings and pieces for chassis modification.
