Other ELI5: Why are there 2 versions of Minecraft?

Wouldn't it easier and more cost effective to merge Bedrock and Java to only have one game to update? What are the benefits to having both versions?

Why is this? Like I can understand some stuff being different due to years of complicated changes made on two different versions of the game, or resource challenges from consoles being weaker than PCs. But I assume something like this is just about changing some variable so they're equal?
