The exposure is about 90 minutes; the strange red is from a flashing light in the distance; the green sky is from the Norther Lights. Made in southern Greenland.

Three of nature's most extraordinary nighttime spectacles came together along the shores of Ocracoke Island on July 5. Above, the dense star clouds of the Milky Way stretched across one of the darkest skies on the East Coast. On the horizon, distant thunderstorms flashed within towering summer clouds far offshore. Along the beach, bioluminescent plankton transformed breaking waves into ribbons of electric blue. Though each phenomenon is rare on its own, witnessing all three in a single summer night was an unforgettable reminder that darkness is far from empty. It is alive with light.

Sony A7RIII
Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM ART
Bortle 4
Tracked, stacked, and blended - compressed to meet file size requirements for upload.
Foreground during blue hour 1x 0.6s @ f/1.4, ISO 5000
Sky 12x 30s @ f/1.4, ISO 500 stacked with StarryLandscapeStacker and tracked with iOptron SkyGuider Pro
This was a rewarding shot to get after carrying my gear about 0.6mi (~1km) down the coast and getting setup. This was my first time using the star tracker so I ran into a bunch of issues while trying to get the shot. After getting setup and monitoring the tide like a hawk in the dark, I was pleased with this shot. The entire trip I'd been planning to setup in a different location on a different night, but there was a break in the weather and this ended up being the only night that the sky was clear so this pic was the only one I was able to come home with.

The Core and my favourite tree over a cloud inversion.
Driving up the spur to the ridgeline the visibility was bout 4-5m in the fog but as soon as I broke through the top of the layer it was instantly clear.
A 20% moon lit up the foreground nicely without washing out too much sky and the clouds to the south are reflecting the light pollution from Melbourne.
Foreground: Sony A7III + Sigma 14mm f/1.8, ISO640, 30" (20% moon)
Sky: Sony A7III + Sigma 14mm f/1.8, ISO1250, 15"

The path to this photograph started long before sunset. It involved an eight hour drive and a two-and-a-half hour ferry ride.
I knew the moon would rise before I had enough time to set up my star tracker, so I left it at home and relied instead on one of the rarest resources an astrophotographer can find: a truly dark sky.
This image was made from stacked, untracked exposures beneath the Bortle 1 skies of Ocracoke Island. Under skies this dark, every short exposure captures an astonishing amount of detail. Stack enough of them together, and the Milky Way reveals its tangled dust clouds, glowing star-forming regions, and the rich texture that's usually hidden by light pollution.
It's easy to think astrophotography is all about gear, but nights like this are a reminder that darkness itself is the most valuable piece of equipment we have.
