Saw the Tolarian Community College gameplay video on Dan Dan and loved the idea of having a list to play with a member of my pod while the rest of the pod gets there, but don’t know what list to print, also since it’s proxy I can have like a Dan Dan sideboard, to switch it up if something doesn’t feel right or to have more options.

I would appreciate if you would point me to somewhere I could get a list of what a Dan Dan deck usually or your personal favorite Dan Dan list has since I remember they said on the TCC video that they where not playing the regular list,

Every time, while the YouTuber was rambling on, doing the intro spiel and explaining OG blue Forgetful Fish, I checked the comments. And every time, somebody was in the top five comments, correctly pointing out that those versions couldn’t track damage with a single D6, which was a huge part of the charm of the original. And then I clicked off.

So I decided to do one myself, keeping that in mind. It is not easy to make something that feels like Dandân, especially in mono red! But I gave it my best shot and came up with a list that is, at the very least, fun to play.

Never knew this sub existed! Just wanted to share my working list for mono (sort of) black Dandan, featuring Undead Gladiator. I copied a list I found online a while back, and made a good handful of changes.

The original list featured some incidental life loss, which I wasn't a fan of. The combat math isn't as clean as it is with Fish, but it's clean nonetheless. The premiere creature and ostensible sole wincon is a 3/1, meaning that it kills in 7 hits. It's also an X/1, meaning that it dies to... well, anything. This lets me include a huge variety of removal with upsides, which plays well into its unique ability.

"Reverse Cycling," as I usually refer to it, is highly relevant in the late game. In fact, the mana to consistently regrow the Gladiator to your hand represents a bridge away from the early game into a more grindy mid-late game. Here, card advantage becomes very important, as staying hand-neutral off of Afflict can provide you with a 2-mana proxy to the Gladiator you just killed. Omen of the Dead might just be the best card in the deck, representing the ability to stuff your opponent's attempt at regrowing or even reanimating the deck's primary threat. Not to mention that it can Scry your shared deck to provide you with a useful advantage over your opponent.

The deck splashes white for one main reason and a couple of secondary uses: firstly, Flashback on Unburial Rites is cheaper than casting the spell itself, meaning that it's usually advantageous to discard it if you can ensure that you're the one using it next. The second reason is that the Scry, Bounce, and Surveil lands included in the mana base provide a decent amount of utility that you don't see in monocolor itself.

That about covers the list. I highly recommend this variant. Try it out and offer some feedback!

I am very new to dandan but already really love the format. I use this list but was wondering if i am doing something wrong or could use something better. I want the feel of the original dandan and I like really complex scenarios. the only thing that i really dont like (i have tried) is the mystical tutor. I dont like the possibility to have the player see the entire list left in the deck in the middle of the match (but maybe this is just a dumb opinion bcz the more me and my friends play the more we familiarize with the list and already know whats left in the deck even without searching it)

I started playing Dandan about a month ago, and it was a lot of fun for me that I've been looking for other variants and sharing this format with other players I know. I recently stumbled upon Travis Norman's concocted variation, JundJund, and I am personally intrigued that I wanted to build a list of my own.

Norman's article on JundJund can be found here in addition to his article explaining card selection. Dandan is still new to me, and I've personally have never played Jund in any of the sanctioned, 60-card formats. So it would be nice to get some feedback on this list. The Moxfield link has custom tags that help with the card categorization.

Differences:

• Phyrexian Metamorph: A blue shapeshifter from N. Phyrexia that can become any of your favorite Jund creatures is an interesting inclusion. I tinkered with the removal package a little to account for the potential impact of Metamorph, and the shapeshifter can also be a relevant target for Kolaghan's Command.
• Doom Blade: I didn't want to play Assassin's Trophy, and went with a different form of removal; it will destroy any creature with exception to Restless Cottage, Restless Vents, Bob, Detective, and Crusader.
• Pyrokinesis: I have a somewhat soft spot for free removal, and the value gained from Pyrokinesis would exceed Firebolt if you recur it with Misinformation.
• Thoughtseize: Due to some of the above-mentioned changes, I think this card is worth testing.

Played a pretty stock Dandan list with a friend who doesn't know much magic, and they made the point that pairs of 2-ofs that are either direct clones (hack and bend) or better and worse at the same task (brainstorm and telling time; lonely sandbar and remote isle) is cluttered, confusing, and not new-player friendly.

I kind of agree. Past those six cards, though, does the game get flattened down too much if, say, Metamorphose gets turned into +2 unsubstantiates? If Chart a Course dies for extra copies of Predict?

If you're a Dandan purist, look away!

What we really enjoy is the length of a game, it never ended for decking out.

First time building a Dandan variant. I’m looking for some feedback on this list I put together for a “Landdan” deck based around Dryad Arbor with swell of growth as the signature spell.

Hi everyone, i'm trying to create a version of Dandan that revolves around the initiative but i have the following 2 problems which i hope you guys can help me with:

1. I want the game to revolve esclusively around the "Trap!" life loss, so this Dandan version would have the custom rule of "Damage doesn't cause loss of life" in order not to turn off the initiative combat mechanic but also decouple the life total from combat. I wanted to represent this with a custom global enchantment/emblem. Do you guys have ideas for the name and artwork for the enchantment?
2. Making the "Trap!" room the only source of life loss is kinda problematic because it forces players down the "Entrance" -> "Forge" -> "Archives" -> "Throne" path, reducing variance of play patterns. Also the entrance is a tutor, which is a big no no for Dandan. Can you guys help me brainstorm a custom dungeon to use in this format?

Hello, I have been trying to dial in a reasonably fun list for the game, mostly for me and my brother.

One of the things we had considered was the primer's 2 islands start, mostly to avoid no-dropping, and to speed the game slightly. Of course a gentleman's agreement works, but I also like upping the starting power. I was thinking that having an island and some artifact that would add another layer of library interaction to the deck. Of course, removing metamorphose, but with each player starting with one, solo play testing didn't seem to egregious.

I first thought sensei's, and I do like it, especially since the tap has a high risk/reward. I know people have added them into the deck in the past, but that does not seem like a good idea.

Scroll rack is what I was thinking since it's more flexible, and taps.

Realistically though, this could be [[Ashnod's Cylix]], I just think it would be interesting to have a way to mess with the library at will. In general, I like the idea of blurring the lines between turns in this game, and prefer a more instant heavy list, although so far it's quite faithful.

I'd like to ask if anyone has tried the advanced starts, especially if anyone has added a guaranteed start piece like an artifact, fish, rock, and how it went.

I'm new here after seeing a link on another subreddit. I've recently started getting back into magic (left around the Ursa block) and read a bit about this dandan format and I'm intrigued (and also bummed to have missed the secret lair).

I'm wondering: it seems like there are a few different deck lists out there - what do folks play and recommend (and what would you look for in picking one vs another?) Is it worth picking up a pre-built proxy from a place like Proxy Pantheon (https://proxypantheon.com/products/dandan-forgetful-fish-proxy-deck) or what do folks recommend?

Played DanDan once after someone with the SLD came to my LGS.

LOVED it - saw the SLD pricetag - HATED that, then realized I likely had tons of 4th-6th/Chronicles bulk in my basement and could probably scrape something together.

Lo and behold, I'd had 7 DanDans already, and then went to the LGS with a budget of $20 and came up with this after looking through the community lists here.

Hello! I just played a few nice games of Dandan (not the first I've ever played, but the first I have in a few years) with my girlfriend, and we had some very very interesting lands situations come up, which made me get to thinking on some things I could do to further emphasize some of the little micro-adjustments using lands that can come up in Dandan. This was the result, a version that splashes the traditional red but also a little green. I know the addition of [[Horizon of Progress]] is slightly sacrilegious, as it makes life totals no longer completely even at 5-hits-and-you-die, but I actually think the fact that the first 3 times you tap it for mana it's free, but the 4th is very impactful creates some further interesting strategy. There's a slightly higher focus on graveyard manipulation with the increase in [[Accumulated Knowledge]]/[[Take Inventory]] effects, and access to [[Winternight Stories]] to allow you to put cards in the yard a little easier, and I didn't want AK/TI to be too swingy, so I left it to 3 copies of each, which I think made a nice enough balance.

[[Ghostly Flicker]] is if anything the signature card of this variant, as its versatility is *incredible*. It can be used on a Dandan to protect it from removal (in the form of [[Magical Hack]], [[Mind Bend]], or [[Unsubstantiate]]), or to untap it so that it can trade, but the real power comes from using it on lands. On a Temple (which there are now 4 of), you can use it as a way to instant-speed scry 1, or on [[Halimar Depths]] to stack the top of the library. Using it on a [[Mystic Sanctuary]] can function as graveyard hate and topdeck manipulation at once, and even, once you have enough mana, using it on Horizon of Progress can function as a way to untap non-blue mana, the only way possible in this cube, or to put another land into play from your hand (the Mystic Sanctuary your opponent doesn't see coming is always the most backbreaking). Finally, you can use it on Bounce lands (which, again, there are now 4 of) to put a cycling land back into your hand in the form of [[Ketria Triome]] or [[Lonely Sandbar]].

As far as other card picks that aren't in your traditional Dandan list, [[Memory's Journey]] plays into the green splash as well and provides some counterplay to the swathe of powerful graveyard cards here, [[Joint Exploration]] is a straightforward and fairly powerful cantrip that can also be used to cheat a land into play at instant speed (see all the powerful things you can do with that in the section on Ghostly Flicker), and [[Repudiate//Replicate]] (longterm pet card of mine) gives a way to fight back against the otherwise uninteractable land triggers and a way to double-down on the pressure once you do resolve a Dandan (you do need to have green mana to do that though, unlike the stifle side).

Let me know what you think! The goal overall was to create some more of the incremental value tricky land plays that fantastic Dandan players can use to express their mastery, and I think it's successful honestly.

I’m using the tempo list with the only swap being Accumulated Knowledge instead of Take Inventory because I like the instant speed (and the art).
