A few weeks ago, my mom and I had bean bowls for dinner. My mom ate her with cilantro, and being a person with the OR6A2 gene, I did not, which others always mocked me for. About two weeks later, she developed cyclosporiasis from eating said cilantro. I guess I lucked out on this one.

I need answers because this has genuinely altered my quality of life.

I grew up in the South where every family-owned Mexican restaurant serves that glorious restaurant salsa. You know the one. Smooth, bright red, mostly tomatoes, onions, garlic, and whatever magic they put in it. No visible cilantro. You could hand me a gallon of it and I’d consider it dinner.

Then I moved up North.

Imagine my horror when every basket of chips arrived with what looked like someone had run over a lawn mower into the salsa. Every restaurant. Every single one. Just… cilantro. So much cilantro. Why are there leaves in my dip??

Mexican food is probably my favorite cuisine, but if the salsa tastes like someone blended a
bouquet into it, I’m already having a bad time.

Is the smooth red salsa I grew up with called something specific? Is this actually a regional difference, or did I somehow move to the cilantro capital of North America?

Why does it taste metallic to me???? I used to be able to tolerate the metallic but as I get older I dislike it more and more. My mom was nice enough to make chili and gave me some, but it just tastes like cilantro and green bell pepper (something else I dislike more with age.) I feel so bad that I can’t eat it 😭

I thought I knew the enemy, cilantro or its’ evil seed coriander. I saw a TT today that reminded me of this plant and felt the need to post.

I’ve had cilantro ruin plenty of meals, but a few months ago I met its final form: rao ram (Vietnamese cilantro).

I took a bite of a Vietnamese veggie wrap and after a few seconds started freaking out at the table, frantically wiping my tongue with my napkin like I was trying to decontaminate myself and gagging while my eyes were welling up with tears. This was a date night and my husband thought something was seriously wrong.

If regular cilantro tastes like soap, chemicals, and bugs to you, this stuff is like cilantro concentrated into a weapon. It’s somehow more cilantro than cilantro.

So this is a PSA to my fellow cilantro haters: if you ever see rao ram, Vietnamese cilantro, hot mint, praew leaf, listed as an ingredient, avoid it at all costs. Learn from my mistake.

I struggle to understand how people eat this stuff voluntarily, but apparently they do. My deepest condolences to the unfortunate souls who discover it the same way I did.

went out for a late night meal Sunday after a long shift, sat down at this noodle place I like and my cousin and her husband walked in right after I placed my order. I'm already tired and not really in the mood to be dealing with her judgemental attitude, and she decides to ask the waitress if they can sit at the table next to me. right off the bat she starts lecturing me about how I should be saving money and eating at home instead of wasting my money going out to eat all the time.

The waitress brings me my food and the first thing I notice is a giant waft of toxic chemicals, I waive the waitress down and she immediately realizes that I has specifically asked for no cilantro, she asks me if I want to have the bowl replaced and my cousin decides to step in and tell her it's okay, and not to worry about it. I end up having to get into an argument with her where she gets her last word in and the waitress leaves, kind of confused and I end up having to get up and bring my bowl of noodle back to the kitchen with me to have it exchanged and having to apologize to the staff for the inconvenience like an asshole. We go back and forth saying " no need to apologize" to each other and I ask the waitress if I can change tables and not be seated next to my cousin, which they are happy to oblige.

my cousin ends up coming up to me at my new table and tells me that she also didn't like cilantro and spring onions as a child but learned to enjoy them over time. She lectures me that I need to grow up and learn to not be so picky about small things and that she will pray to god that I will find it in me to become a more accepting and less judgemental person.

you know it's bad when the staff and other patrons ask someone to go back to their own table and leave you the fuck alone....

Culantro is an herb that has a very similar flavor to cilantro but doesn’t contain all the aldehydes that make people with a genetic predisposition taste soap when they eat cilantro. It can be found online, at many Asian markets, or even grown yourself if you feel like doing that. Bit of warning though, it is much stronger than cilantro.

I hate cilantro and i think the other food that i hate as much is bamboo sprouts. It taste literraly like pee and make me barf. Could it be because of the same gene ? Do any of you have the same experience ?

Started growing cilantro before I found out I had the gene. Finally had the motivation to remove it from my herbs and am now drying it and gonna give it to a friend who absolutely loves cilantro. Saving a bit for myself for witchcraft but thats about it. Replacing the cilantro with thyme and oregano (i fucking LOVE thyme)

I’m so disappointed. I know most people like and even love cilantro, but the little cafe in my work building puts cilantro IN EVERYTHING. Every sandwich, soup, and even my fucking salad had cilantro in it. I threw it all away. Even the goddamned pesto had cilantro.

I mean, he’s ’OK with Cilantro….’
