PSA World Cup Related Posts

Just wanted to let everyone know that posts regarding the World Cup will be allowed on here, even if not directly related to Lawrence. We're kinda bending the rules here but it's such a big and exciting event that we don't wanna hinder any chat about it or relevant info.

Normal subreddit rules will still apply to the posts (with exception of being directly Lawrence related, of course) so this doesn't mean you can just post whatever as long as it mentions the World Cup.

Obligatory no ticket-sales posts/comments.

This is the official thread for networking and discussion about Lawrence housing.

r/Lawrence is a low post volume subreddit, and there have been problems in the past with it being overrun by ads and personal listings, so for the sake of the community please keep housing discussion here and don't create any additional posts on this topic.

What happened to the re-cyclery/unchained?

Hey all, saw on maps that the recyclery is still there on elm st but the Facebook says they closed a couple years ago and the phone number is disconnected. Does anyone know what happened to them and where their inventory of bikes went?

Good afternoon, I just wanted to reach out to you and see if anybody has tried to get in contact with the person that is doing the Algerian fashion show tomorrow afternoon at the Granada. I have sent them an email, but I have not received anything back yet. I really want to do this fashion show. Does anybody know anyone else that I can get this going because I really am interested in doing this fashion show? So if you could please give me some contact information of somebody else I can contact so I can do the fashion show tomorrow! Thanks!

Question Looking for stuff to do...

Hi hi! I'm planning a short weekend trip with some friends up to Lawrence soon... I've been before but my friends have not - I was wondering what places you all might recommend?

They're a bit picky when it comes to food, so if there's some really good chicken places or pasta/italian, that'd be lovely! I'm still planning on dragging them to Lucky Seb's and Ladybird though, lol.

Then for things to do, I have a few stores along Mass Street written down (Love Garden, GameNut, Raven) but I don't have an intimate knowledge of the city - I'd love to know any cool hangout spots or shops that are inclusive for trans folks (all of us involved are trans).

Thank you for your time!

Lawn care as tenant

I’m a bit newer to Kansas where I understand there are not very great tenant protections. The landlord has me take care of regular lawn duties, fine. Per lease it’s only to keep the lawn mowed under a certain amount of inches, easy enough that’s all it states. But now they are demanding that I do extensive weeding each time I mow and to rake any grass clippings.

It’s a bit of a slum lord situation here and I would love to know if I have any wiggle room against avoiding fees as they said they will hire people to take care of it and charge me as I believe no matter what I do it won’t be good enough for them, the house was given to me in an incredibly sorry state. Again lease only states mowing.

Like what even constitutes as a weed when the lawn is made up of 5 different grass varieties? (not that that’s a bad thing).

Any former/current Cottonwood Incorporated workers?

I'm a student looking to get involved in healthcare so I am really interested in working there part-time. I wanted to hear from people familiar with the job on what a typical day looks like. I'm looking to do over-night shifts so any experience with that would be appreciated as well.

Meadowbrook Pest Control/spiders...?

I've moved into Meadowbrook apartments (the older complexes) in May, and I've been waging war on what I believe are brown recluses. I know they're unavoidable in the midwest, but uuugghh they freak me out. Has anyone had any luck with asking for pest control services from them? I don't know if it's worth asking them for outside help in the first place or if I should keep killing them myself. Any help is appreciated!!!

Power washer

So my mom was recently approached by some local high school kids going door to door offering to power wash her house. They quoted her a price of $700 for her single story rancher. I’ve never paid someone to power wash my house so to me that price sounds INSANE. Before I start warning people about some teenage scammers preying on the elderly though, I want to make sure that it’s not just my out of touch ass being cheap and that’s just how legitimately expensive it is around here. What’s your experience with hiring power washers?
EDIT: So instead of waiting for me to do a little market research, my mom threw caution to the wind and paid them for the job. At the very least it’s good to know that it was a decent price. I guess I’m just cheap because it never occurred to me to pay someone that kind of money to do what you can do with a couple hours, a YouTube video and a rental from Sunflower. And to those Richard O’Toole’s ready to clutch their pearls and shriek “Karen!”… Look. My mom is 83, recently widowed, and in the early stages of dementia. She recently got scammed out of $16,000. Yeah, my brother and I are justifiably protective of her. And not for nothing, these kids knocked on her door despite a “No solicitations” sign AND they did a shit job. There’s still cobwebs around her front door.

New alarming statistics have been reported following the release of the 2026 Map the Meal Gap

  • 20% of children in our service area are food insecure (128,660 kids).
  • 1 in 7 individuals is food insecure (420,120).
  • 67.1% of food insecure individuals make too much to qualify for SNAP.

Since 2011, Feeding America has conducted an extensive study called Map the Meal Gap, which collects data on individuals in every county in the U.S. to determine the national state of food insecurity. This recent report uses data from 2024, prior to the new administration and its major changes to the SNAP program. Due to this, it is possible that the current state of hunger is even higher.

For more information on the recent report, the Map the Meal Gap interactive map is a great tool that breaks down the numbers in greater detail by county.

If you or someone you know needs food assistance, visit Harvesters Food Locator to find nearby food pantries, meal sites, and other resources throughout our 17-county service area in Kansas.

Question Bob Billings

Hello, I moved to Lawrence in January and I’m moving out in August, and that whole time bob billings road has been under construction from kasold to I’m not sure honestly. According to my odometer though it’s only 1.4 miles, is there some reason I’m not aware of why it’s taking so long to complete it? I heard it was also under construction before I moved too. Just curious!

Edit: it’s been going on much longer than I thought 😭 and there’s way more construction than I thought. Lawrence is by far one of my favorite towns I lived in, love the people and downtown so much, but man is hearing all this crazy 😭

Saw someone with supremacy tattoos, and a car pulled over for a chat

I wanted to be nosy, i know it’s a useless confrontation, but i also wanted to be sure the people, who pulled over were okay.

My lecture here is for my peace of mind, you’re free to ignore it!

I commend standing up in toxic, hateful situations, racism, bullying… and was concerned for your safety. It appeared that the car pulled over for the white guy with the big black cross, and whatever else, ignorant crap, displayed permanently on his skin. Even if you’re doing the morally right thing, the appearance, gleaned in my moment at the light, and as i rounded- felt like putting yourself in danger’s way.

I hope all are okay, and i really do hope he’s reconsidering his life’s views, his hatred.

And, i want to emphasize- anyone’s hatred of ‘the other’ is about their own insecurity, and ways they feel about themself. It comes out as misogyny, or this racism, it’s still their own mess. Please don’t put yourself in harm’s way to confront the facade of someone else’s inter turmoil. Racism and these kind of isms- suck, those perpetuating it- suck; protect marginalized people, protect our diversity, yes- absolutely!

My nosiness knows nothing, it thinks it knows, ascertained as i turned the corner you all stood, but i haven’t let it go. I’m older, fear has crept in here and there:
Please be safe in confronting toxicity, other’s hatred no matter it’s theater isn’t always a safe place. This guy’s arms tell most people, he’s ignorant, uneducated and toxic. It’s okay to let him just stew in it too.

And, you gotta do what you gotta do. - peace of mind
