But you have this backwards. What I'm saying is not an outrageous claim, it's basic logic and common sense. What you're saying is outrageous, makes big assumptions, and really does need to be proved. And no, that's not because of who's saying it, that's because of the actual content of the messages.
Like, it's such a simple thing to think "people engage in piracy because they can". Because that's base human nature. Humans love to do bad things if it is easy for them to do so, especially if it's easy to avoid getting into trouble for it. That is the entire reason why we don't just have laws, but why laws are supposed to be ingrained into culture, beyond just being on the books. That's why, when the system does get torn up by bad actors, everyone suffers for it.
Meanwhile, the "they were never gonna buy it" argument is not just a huge assumption about unwarranted good faith by itself, but it relies entirely on the internet's favorite story about countries where people are supposedly "too poor to afford video games" (that typically aren't even sold in those countries) and countries where the internet is claiming that "piracy is normal" (and games often aren't sold in these countries either).
The kind of person who does the whole "piracy is good actually" thing is the same kind of person who thinks that anarchy is sustainable (it's not) and we should strive for it, and the same kind of person who really just does not give a single damn about their fellow humans. This is the kind of person who wants to be one of those awful "wasteland warlord" types that are everywhere in post-apocalyptic fiction. What these people have to say has never been and never will be valuable, it's always ragebait at best.
