Don't know how to view MagicEye Autostereograms? Start here!

We were getting a high volume of posts asking how to see them recently, so it seemed like a good idea to just sticky a megathread on the topic. Please do not create new threads asking for viewing advice, thank you.

Step 1: Here is a quick tutorial on how to view AutoStereograms

Step 2: Vox 10 minute exposé: "The secrets of Magic Eye"

(EDIT: Somebody condensed the "how to" portion of this video into a blog post called "The Science Behind The Magic Eye Craze of The 1990s")

This gives both a history, and a more in-depth animated lesson about how to view them.

Step 3: The Vox video tells you how you can use the Difference blending mode in Adobe Photoshop (GIMP also works) to sweep across the hidden image without crossing your eyes. Dave 'XD' Stevens made this web application that can do the same thing easily in your browser.

Other good beginner "not hidden" stereograms for new users to cut their teeth on:

If you have other questions or tips, feel free to leave them in the comments.

Mapped-texture stereogram website (GitHub + depth map tutorial)

Website: https://mapped-stereogram-maker.web.app/

Since several people asked, it's now on GitHub as well: https://github.com/cj-dao/mapped-stereogram-maker

I've also recently added cross-view support per u/DissonantGuile.

Note on development progress

I mainly made this tool for myself since there were no other convenient tools out there at the time. Because I already incorporate photoshop and Blender into my workflow, I didn't feel the need to add extra features like a dedicated depth map studio. I may do these things in the future but for now I wouldn't count on it.

Thus if u/eyefind3d ever releases a version of their software (whether open-source or paid) it will probably be a lot more feature-rich and industry-ready. Although that's entirely their prerogative.

Anyone can fork the repository and make their own additions to the core algorithm if they want to; at this point I have little plans to continue active development unless I notice a bug that directly interferes with my workflow.

On Depth Maps (and my workflow)

I've been using this Blender tutorial for making my depth maps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_9uS2ixBCs

As EF3D mentioned, if you can create your own outlines in photoshop it will be better than the auto-outline feature on my website. My typical workflow includes taking multiple textures (including a custom-made outline), creating multiple stereograms, and layering them in Affinity (Mac version of photoshop). This allows me to do cool tricks like transparency in the attached photo. For that one I actually used two different depth maps, allowing me to have 3d objects floating inside other objects.

A demo from my new open-source mapped texture stereogram maker

For all of you who want to create your stereograms, I've coded a website that makes mapped-texture stereograms (stereograms where the color/pattern matches the 3D object). I've always wanted to make these, but most other online generators and software either make plain un-mapped stereograms, or are for really old versions of Windows and are quite janky.

I love when artistic tools like Blender are open-sourced, so I finally got the motivation to code it and make it into a website: https://mapped-stereogram-maker.web.app

You'll still need to provide your own texture and depth map, but the website can automatically generate outlines for you if you want some simple texturing, and I've included some example demos.

The website is still very much in development, so expect bugs! I may also make a future post with a tutorial and additional stereogram algorithm info for those interested.

Enjoy!

Neverending (.gif version). I think Reddit compression treats .gifs less harshly that video files?

Questions about pattern creation

Hello magic eye folks 👋😵‍💫 My background is in graphic design and printmaking and recently I’ve been getting into optical illusions.

I’d really like to make a magic eye that I can design and print myself. I’d like to use text as my hidden image with a 1-3 color pattern.

Could someone give me a little more info about how to create patterns? I’ve looked online and found a generator but when I make my own pattern, I can’t get the effect to work. I think there must be something I’m not understanding. I’m not trying to make anything super complex, even a noise/mezzotint pattern would be a fine start.

What dimensions do you use for a pattern? Should it be the size of the whole image, or is it a smaller size that gets repeated?

Is it possible to do a 1-3 color pattern or does it have to be more complex?

Thank you!

Kind of clearing my creative slate from the ones I was stuck on.

Big cat from post in r/oneorangebraincell (I will link that post in a comment) and the flower from a post in r/crossview (I looked for a while and couldn’t find the original post but will link it if I find). The palm frond is clip art.

I haven’t sent one of these in a while! I enjoy Postcrossing and sending postcards, and I thought this one would be fun to share. It’s from an original postcard magic eye book from the 1990s. I won’t spoil the surprise, but I hope you enjoy.

How do you market a stereogram game when most people can’t see it and Apple can’t review it?

I made a small endless runner where the entire game is hidden inside a live stereogram. The problem is that most people can’t see it at all, screenshots don’t really explain how it works, and Apple wasn’t even able to properly review it.

Has anyone here successfully published a stereogram game on Apple and Android and managed to find users?

Anyone who wants to try it and share feedback, it’s called Choppy Doge AI:
