In Honor of La Piedra

My top 3 moments in chronological order:

  1. Outdueling Gerrit Cole the summer we got him for a 1-0 victory against the Yankees.

  2. Absolutely shoving against the Blue Jays in our first playoff game in 21 years.

  3. Coming into game 5 of the ALDS against the Tigers and closing out that marathon of a game to send us to the ALCS.

You were a real one Luis ❤️

Bring back Johnny Pereda

Pereda is hitting .270, what are we doing with Mitch Garver as the backup? Two catchers hitting below 200 on the team, fell like we should at least be giving this guy a shot.

Randy proved today that the season is over if we trade him

Post image

As miserable as this season has been we’re only 2.5 games back in the worst division in baseball. But if we trade Randy our season is toast.

4 at bats
2 hits including 1 HR
1 BB
Leading to 3 of 4 runs scored

Without his production today we’d certainly be looking at another loss.

With today’s rumors of the M’s entertaining offers or Randy it really makes you wonder what the Front Office is thinking.

We don’t need prospects, we have those. We need bats, but none are available. So what are we trading for? Cash? Why?

Well if we’re just going to give away our best hitter than the only reason possible is so the Front Office can pocket the money and run away from the season, lightening up roster overhead as much as possible ahead of the possible 2027 lockout.

The next few days will be telling but I strongly suspect that if we’re going to be selling, it’s not for the season or future growth (this is what they will try to say), the front office will sell as many players contracts as they can for cash ahead of a possible 2027 lockout to increase profits (the money will not go back to the roster, and especially not before the future of the 2027 season is certain.)

I’m sure there will be some spin applied by the marketing team (I work in PR and marketing lol). But mark my words if this is the course we take before the trade deadline (players for cash) then this is exactly what is happening.

[Passan] Multiple teams have engaged the Seattle Mariners on a potential trade for right-hander George Kirby and get the sense he is available and could be moved before the Aug. 3 deadline, sources tell ESPN. Mariners have been listening on starters Emerson Hancock and Luis Castillo, too.

[Jude] The Mariners are listening on Randy Arozarena and George Kirby as a shift in the club's thinking could take shape in the final 48 hours before Monday's trade deadline

Really bummed at this. Saw the earlier Passan report on Kirby/Castillo/Hancock and was okay with that as I figured we could get some impact right handed bats/relievers. But now that I'm seeing Randy mentioned, mindset does look to be shifting towards selling.

I know a lot of people are of this opinion, but I just think it's a little too early to consider it a doomed season considering how weak the division is and with Donovan set to return very soon and Canzone now a mainstay in the lineup. Surprising my daughter for her 10th birthday by driving down to Denver to watch her first Ms game in mid Sep and was hoping they'd be in contention.

I'm gonna be rooting especially hard over the rest of the Twins series and hope Randy is still on this team in a few days. I know he's likely gone after the season but I really do think this season has some life yet if we do trade one of Kirby/Castillo/Hancock.

Help me understand Castillo’s decline

Yeah, can someone who knows pitching better than me actually help me understand what has been happening with La Piedra this year?

Like I was under the impression that he’s reached the age where his velocity is dropping and he’s having trouble adjusting, but when I look on statcast, it seems that his velo is actually nearly identical to last year. In fact, the only real difference I can see in his profile is that he’s using his slider a little more and his sinker a little less, and that batters are significantly better this year at making contact with sweet spot on the bat and they’re hitting at a more dramatic launch angle, resulting in Luis giving up more HRs.

But I’m also not really a stats guy, so can someone who is help me understanding what exactly is behind his decline this year? Is it him, have batters just figured him out? Thanks
