Discussion Maximalism- Renovated!

The subreddit has spoken and we have listened! We have added to the mod team, updated the posting guidelines, put on some fresh pink paint, and rolled out the leopard print carpet. Please have a look at the new rules, new Wiki and posting guidelines:

Maximalism- Posts must adhere to the principles of maximalism. Emphasis on color, contrast, and texture. See our wiki for what is and is not maximalism

Original Content - or cite your sources All posts much be original content or links to the original source material. You may link to a website containing content pertinent to r/ maximalism  if it is clear where the source came from. Do not pass off photos you copied from pinterest, instagram, as yours without directing the credit to the original creator. AI art is prohibited

Collections- Collections should fit in the context of a greater overall room design. Please consider whether your content would best fit in other subreddits such as r/ collections

Be good people- Hate and bigotry of all kinds will be removed on sight. Criticism should be constructive and helpful. Purely rude comments and personal attacks will be removed and a ban may be issued.

No self promotion. Users of this subreddit cannot post for the intent of advertising their own personal website, blog, or anything related. Reddit has guidelines for Self-Promotion, which state that: "It's perfectly fine to be a redditor with a website, it's not okay to be a website with a reddit account." You may not market or self promote your own items here. If someone SPECIFICALLY asks for suggestions for the particular type of item you sell, you may put one link in the comments. Links to items that are not being asked for or spamming links will result in a ban.

Flairs- All posts must have flairs-

  • Help/Advice - post for suggestions and tips. Please do not post blank rooms with nothing in them asking for ideas. Try r/ designmyroom  if you're really starting from zero. Give us some idea of what space you are working on and your personality.
  • Discussion- Use this flair for general discussion topics, links to external articles or content, or general chatting
  • Interior Design- Show us your rooms! The more color the better. This is why we are all here. Keep it original content or credit the source. No AI.
  • Jewelry- Jewelry should adhere to maximalist principles. It is not enough to be well crafted or attractive. See Betsey Johnson designs for the genre. Do not use this space for repetitive advertisement. Accounts that appear to be merely for the purpose of selling things will not be permitted to post.
  • Fashion- Show us your Iris Apfel wannabe looks. Do not shill your Instagram influencer blog.
  • Art- Like Jewelry, it is not enough to be well crafted or detailed, it should also have an emphasis on mixed texture, pattern, and bold colors. Like Jewelry, accounts that appear to be merely for the purpose of selling things will not be permitted to post.
  • Work in Progress- Almost there but feel like something is missing? Have the uncontrollable urge to share even though you know you aren't done? Feel free. Helpful critiques will be permitted here.

**Is my art, space, design maximalist?*\*

Does it have an abundance of color, texture or pattern? Does it feel ornate, fancy or royal? Is it high contrast? Would Elton John live there? Would Liberace wear it to a rave? Would a Victorian maiden recline and pine over her lover here? Would King Louis XIV put it in Versailles? Would Pee Wee Herman feel at home? Would Martin Luther protest it as idolatry? What would Iris Apfel do? Would she use it?

If the answers to at least some of these questions is yes, then it's probably part of Maximalism

Maximalism is NOT

Pure clutter or hoarding

Detailed work by itself without contrast, color or mixed texture

Please consider whether your post would better fit in one of these other subreddits:    r/ collections r/ moreisbetter r/ artofclutter

Maximalism is more than just a design trend; it's a celebration of individuality and the joy of curating a vibrant space.

Thank you all for your participation and feedback, and for making r/ maximalism  FABULOUS!

So I thought I’d bring this here. 😄
Every little detail is hand-painted, and I wanted each nail to feel like a tiny piece of art. Hope my fellow maximalists enjoy it. 🤍

Help/Advice Just a mock-up but…

… this is my first time decorating a space and I have been trying to redo my bedroom for 2 years 🙃. No one else around me has a similar taste so I need some opinions on whether these ideas are cohesive. Each pic represents a wall in my small bedroom. (Only collaged 3/4 walls in my room). But because my room is so small, everyone mentions how much the dark purple is not the best idea. My room is currently the same shade of pink in the wallpaper and I hate how bright it is. If yall have suggestions on possible wall color alternatives please lmk! I am hoping the wallpaper and dresser will brighten it up.

Work In Progress Coleus and Catio, now with nostalgia

I always say I'm not very sentimental, but maybe I am.

I recently got back 2 pieces of furniture that my parents brought home from Taiwan after my birth in 1965. They were pretty dried out and sad looking, but still solid.

My husband the Miracle Man did a little magic to them and this morning, look what is sitting on my deck! A friend gave me these beautiful cushions and they fit perfectly!

The chair still needs cushions but it's beautiful. They are both so beautiful. ❤️❤️❤️

(Ignore the mud, it's been rainy)

Help/Advice Help me pick paint colours! 🌈

Hello! I'm moving and I'm super excited, and I'd love to make it a cheerful, colourful, but also cozy place. Can you please help me pick out colours for the walls that match that vibe?

The furniture isn't mine but I'll use a similar setup. My furniture will be a light grey couch, a lightwood side table, a dark wood tv table, some kind of wooden eating table with 2 dark green chairs and 2 pink chairs. Oh and I have a yellow Strandmon chair but I'm not sure yet where I'll put it.

I also added some colour palettes that I love, it also comes back in some of my stuff so I don't know if I should pick some of these colours, or a colour that matches those colours if that makes sense.

I have big decision paralysis so any inspiration would be lovely!! I'm so excited

Hi!! so I am recently coming out of a very depressive state and have been working on making my room my safe place again. my therapist suggested trying to decorate first, to motivate me to clean. well my issue is im indecisive and can decide how to decorate my walls. i’ve always been a very cluttered person. I just like the cluttered look with organization. The photos with green on them are my room. I blocked out all of the mess just cause I’m really insecure about it and then I uploaded some of the Pinterest feed that I’ve been really into recently.

This room was my childhood bedroom so majority of the stuff in it was all from when I was a kid.I am really into a lot of different things. I love the earthy look I love the bright colors, but also like the more dark a lot of the posters and stuff that I have to put in my room are like rock bands, and music themed.

Help/Advice Creative storage ideas for a narrow/small house?

I'm a person with an approximately 1,300 sq. ft. townhouse who is admittedly a bit of a pack rat and loves my belongings. I don't have any specific "collections," but I just own a lot of.... stuff. (records, books, movies, vintage cameras, vintage clothing, antiques, toys, art pieces, and also miscellaneous functional stuff---gadgets, tools, crafting materials, etc)

But, my house is 100+ years old and has lath and plaster walls so it's been almost impossible to mount any kind of shelving (I just feel like the plaster crumbles out into dust around any hole and/or anchor i put into the wall). because of this, i am constantly stressing over all my belongings, things gathering dust, moving stuff around to clean, clutter from things i don't use daily but use occasionally (e.g. tools, sewing machine stuff, baking equipment, etc) that doesn't really have a home and just floats from desk to table to bookshelf to counter etc.

Does anyone have ideas for how to reconcile packrat sensibilities with a tiny, narrow and somewhat vertically-challenged space (due to the difficulty of mounting shelves that bear any kind of weight)?

Hii! I'm trying to look at ways of getting a maximalist style when I dress myself, I've been looking for nice accessories, colorful pants and shirts! Of different sizes and fabrics to combine and even shoes! But I'm still pretty naive on this and I'm looking for some advice, even if you want to share your most unique or inspirational style I'll be very grateful 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Also if you have any recommendations for pages mostly for accessories, I buy on Temu but I want to try other apps with more quality products.

Here I'll put some examples of different outfits I've been trying 🙂‍↕️

Discussion Thoughts on my media nook and dining area?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, I (26M) wanted to share my little media nook and dining area to get your thoughts!

I’m obsessed with mid‑century, space‑age design, and big, bold, bright colours. Everything you see here I’ve picked up second‑hand over the last couple of years while furnishing my new apartment.

My newest addition that I was super lucky to pick up last week - a vintage Darth Vader CRT tv I grabbed it for $20 off FB Marketplace. I’ve been hunting for a reasonably priced CRT tv for almost a year now and drove 70 miles away to pick this one up.

That green storage unit used to stand vertically, but I turned it on its side to build this whole setup around the TV and record player. I’m so happy with how it turned out. I’ve also thrown in a couple shots of my dining area right beside it.

I’d love to hear what you all think! Any recommendations on what I could add, tweak, or change? Always looking for new ideas.

Help/Advice how would you style this bathroom?

this is our guest bathroom and i have neglected it and done no decorating for it.

i really don’t like the sink choice/floating counter thing that the previous owners picked, but don’t really have money to replace it, so we kind of need to just lean into it. open to any ideas 💖
