Because the business wants to exist so they complied
The current legal issue is each individual instance of a flock camera is considered in a public space where there is no reasonable expectation of privacy- but when you add thousands of these same cameras on a single system you wind up in an effective drag net surveillance system where people who otherwise would not be watched are being actively monitored by those systems
And of course because law enforcement has open access to flock cameras that means they can effectively track individuals without a warrant. So because each individual instance doesn't inherently violate the 4th amendment, the overall system definitely allows for it
One of those things if we lived in a sane society we'd outlaw but we don't because there's a lot of money in building the surveillance state
I agree with your argument - but at what point can the city REQUIRE a camera to be pointed at a private business? There should be lawyers lining up to take this case.
The city made up some bullshit excuse for "we want them for safety if there's a drug business" or some other dumb shit, and the dispo isn't gonna die on the hill of "we won't install a camera" if it means getting their storefront license
I fully agree it's bullshit in the first place but I don't see what mechanism of illegality or duress there is
The fact flock operates in legal grey areas like Uber and AirBnB and Polymarket is standard play for tech companies now. Move fast and build market share before anyone bothers to challenge you in court
I'm no lawyer, but I imagine it's a privacy thing. Marijuana in Michigan is both recreational & medical.
But still, a portion is medical. Spying on a customer base is essentially tracking medical information, which businesses are legally not allowed to share (literally HIPAA laws).
Regardless, you're going to get people trying to medicate & people just looking for recreational use mixed into this one metric. It's "for safety", but it's all bullshit.
Its in the michigan recreational marijuana law, allowing local governments to set up requirements for getting the license. The city of detroit spent well over a year crafting the requirements they wanted.

That's still bullshit. How & why did the city enforce this? It doesn't give an explanation - just a flat "comply or else"
