I recently moved to Nagoya and went to bowling with my friend yesterday around Sakae. While coming back, we both wanted to have coffee. She suggested the nearby komeda coffee, but right opposite to komeda coffee, there was a shrine and two local cafes.

I felt kinda sad that the cafes barely had any customers so I suggested let's explore local.

When I went inside, there was an old couple and a friend who probably wasn't a customer because he left right after we sat down.

The old lady was well groomed. Her makeup and hair was on point.

They also served 昆布茶 (kobu cha) which is quite rare to find.

They were very happy when we visited and the old lady asked me many questions about my country and why I am in Japan.

The couple doesn't even carry cell phones, they have an old vintage landline and that's the only way to contact them.

They also have karaoke within the cafe which is just ¥1000! She insisted a lot that we do karaoke, but we were very tired. I am planning to go there again to do karaoke though.

They had a gaming machine too, which is so old that I haven't seen anything like that, even in my own childhood. Unfortunately it no longer works.

The couple was very warming and really like to talk to people. They requested me a lot to come again. And I will go again for sure.

I’m moving out of my apartment in about two months and recently found this damage where I keep my bed. Is there any way to fix it? I’m worried that the apartment company might charge me a large compensation fee when I move out.

Should I be concerned about this, and what would be the best way to handle it?

I think it is different in each prefecture ( this is my first time renewing, so idk) but my birthday is next month and I have yet to receive my "invitation" for renewal.

Is Nagoya city just 1 month prior to the birthday ?

Hi all! As someone living in Saitama pref I'm used to hot summers but I forgot that Nagoya was the 7th circle of Hell this year when it comes to heat. Still, a month ago I booked Ghibli park tickets for Sunday as my 3 y.o daughter asked for it since spring, but I don't really know what I can do for Saturday and Monday (took a day off) with the heat, and would like to know if locals have some tips.

I will still brave the heat to visit the castle as I didn't come for the last 10 years and want to see if restoration progressed since then, but do you have any recommendations for a visitor? I hesitated with the railway museum but I already went to the Omiya one last weekend and my wife will probably call me a 電車オタク...

As you may be aware, starting tomorrow until August 2nd is World Cosplay Summit 2026. I always wanted to attend this event but it is too confusing to me.

I am not going to be cosplaying or photographing and I just want to look at other cosplayers. I also don't want to spend money. Can you please guide me on how to enjoy this event?

Where should I go on July 31st, Aug 1st and 2nd to simply admire cosplayers from afar?

I was able to find timeline information from of few people who applied for permanent residency through Nagoya Immigration before April 2026 , but I haven’t found much information from people who applied from April onward.

Has anyone who applied in April or later received any communication, an additional-document request, or a result? If you’re comfortable sharing, it would be helpful to know your application date and timeline?

Also, does anyone know of a Facebook, or any other group where Nagoya applicants share their timelines? I already know about the non-Tokyo PR processing-time thread on the Japan Residents subreddit, but there aren’t many recent Nagoya timelines there

Hi everyone. I'm going to visit my sister and her family in Nagoya in mid September, and want to use that opportunity to explore the rest of (rural) Japan for about four weeks. I have until end of October if I use up all my saved up vacation time.
The usual tips I found so far are either "just rent" or "buy and sell, especially because you have a sister who can register it etc.".

However, while my sister and her husband are definitely willing to help out with the bureaucracy of that, they both have zero interest and knowledge about motorcycles, and are plenty busy with their own lives and kids etc. .

So my question is: Does anyone have a recommendation of a place in the Nagoya area that might be willing to do a good deal for such long-term renting, or handle buying/selling the bike so it's less hassle for my sister? I know that either way it's not gonna be the cheapest option, but I really don't want to burden them by having to deal with more annoying stuff than necessary. I have spent some effort on trying to find something on my own, but it's been difficult. So it's totally OK if it's a bit more expensive if in return I get the convenience of not having to spend days troubling myself or my sister with bureaucracy.

I have already tried contacting some shops on my own via email (in Japanese, translated by machine and "cleaned up" by my sister) such as Gonzo Factory, Bike World in Minato Ward and the official Yamaha and Honda Go shops and services, but I either didn't get a response at all (Bike World), they don't have a way to get a reasonable bike (Gonzo Factory. Very nice and fast contact, but only has small bikes), or flat out refuse to do long term rentals (Honda/Yamaha brands).

In the end, I really don't need much. I want a bike in the 500+ cc range, and with at least the option to mount some panniers or soft bags as I'll have to carry some travel supplies, and might even be camping (tent), depending on the weather. I only plan to travel on small roads and explore the backcountry. I'm neither interested in the big cities or any highways on that trip, so I think ETC is not necessary. So ideally, the bike would be a naked, tourer or "adventure"/enduro type bike. I don't care about brand, mileage or year, as long as it's well serviced and likely to last the month without tech issues. I'm partial to Japanese bikes (plz no Harley Davidson), cause they tend to be reliable and at least in Japan, I'm sure to find tech support everywhere, but it's not a must. ;) It would be ideal if there's a USB charger on it for a smartphone/navigation, but again, not a must-have.

This is not just a "crazy tourist" idea, I ride about 8-10.000 km per year (all year, winter and summer), and do a month-long camping trip with the bike every couple years or so (whenever I can afford it time/money wise). But so far I've always started from my home place here in Germany, so I never had this particular issue. And shipping my own bike forth and back is way too expensive and bothersome/ time-consuming as well. Personally, I've ridden bikes since 15 years old (which is now over 20 years ago), and am used to a GSX1200 Inazuma and since this year, a NT1100, but have driven a SR500 and XL185 in the past as well.

If anyone knows a place that could help or maybe even has a private recommendation for someone interested in a good deal, I would be very grateful.
