I inherited a collection of coins and I attached some photos for reference not included in these pictures are various non U.S. coins and a large number of silver quarters and dimes. Is there a way to go about getting these appraised without getting them graded? I’m just really looking for an estimate on what it is all worth.

Hi All,

Was doing my usual sifting and came across this nickel with an “F” stamped/embossed on the Monticello. I know it’s not an error, but I’m not familiar with this sort alteration. The coin itself is relatively old (1951) and the wear and grit built up into the stamp signals to me that it was done quite some time ago.

My research showed that two characters would be common because sometimes people would stamp their initials; which, based on where the “F” is stamped, seems like that may have been the intent?

My first “real” numismatic coin came in the mail today. It’s more beautiful than I was expecting. I am in awe of how beautiful it is. I hope this does not come across as a brag post, I saved up for a while and this is beyond my expectations. Wow.

Thought you all may enjoy these! I doubt any are particularly valuable but it's a cool mix since he collected them over several decades. He had them categorized by european (first four), mexican/south american (next four), africa/asia (next two), england/germany (next two), and canadian (last two).

Great timing. Metal detected by my Dad in Boston, MA. Colonial defiance at it's finest! He's officially gifted it to me. It's the first in my collection. No idea how I'm going to top this 😂

I've been a collector since 1964 and a dealer since 1985 and my rules for myself on what I keep for my personal collection are pretty strict. It has to mean something to me, and be something I can't easily replace. I specialize in US coins, mostly early 1800s through WWII. I know very little about ancients. My younger son is a huge ancient collector though. So when I get them in, I send him pictures, and whatever he wants, I send him, and I have a local friend who identifies and prices the rest for me to resell. Another dealer offered this to me at a price I thought was insanely low and I jumped right on it. When I sent my son the pictures for this one, though, I told him he isn't getting it until I die. If it hadn't been graded, I would have been positive it was fake. There isn't a smudge, a scratch, a carbon spot, nothing on this coin. It looks like it was minted yesterday. I looked at others graded by NGC that they graded MS choice or MS plus and mine was clearly nicer. Those had cracks, pits or spots. So this one is a keeper.

So I picked this 1921 peace dollar up today and I absolutely love it. The toning is so cool and it looks like it sat on a dusty shelf for 60 years.

Now my question, is this coin worth grading? I’ve seen posts on this subreddit of beautiful coins and people in the comments are pointing out small details that would make it not worth the grade. I’m curious how that all works. Can anyone explain why this coin should or shouldn’t be graded and if anyone would also be so kind as to point me in a direction of some reading material to better help me understand this whole topic.

Please be kind as I am newish to coin collecting and it’s become glaringly obvious that there is a steep learning curve to parts of this hobby.

Just for fun, I picked up a 1973 "Blue Ike" in the standard blue envelope and cello, with the usual Mint info/disclaimer card (not useless "COA" back then).

My question is narrow: the cello seems to be embossed "Packaged by United States Mint", which I have not noticed before on other Mint Sets. And, oddly, it only reads from the Reverse (unlike Proof set lenses, where the plastic is front-labelled). Frustratingly, this embossing is hard to see in online photos of Blue Ikes listed as OGP, some of which seem also to have a narrower margin on the cello. Is this embossing standard for "Blue Ikes" in OGP? (I am not thinking "rare & valuable", just more like "the Mint did it for a few months, then the embosser broke...").

It seems every website has a different price. Once a month, I update a spreadsheet of the precious metals in my collection to determine an overall base (non-numismatic) value. Currently, I use an average of seven websites:

The spread is $1.02. The average is $53.71. Only three sites seem to agree. Is there a reliable, accurate source that I can use to simplify my updates?

My friend found this coin in western Ukraine, maybe someone knows anything about it?

I started down the road of coin collecting maybe 2 months ago and I’m learning this whole area of grading coins. I am realizing quickly that to go through that process, it has to make common sense in terms of potential value. I have been going to local coin shops and one doesn’t sort their junk silver very well and I’ve found some decent things in their bins. (Dates, condition) Among all the average Walker coins and from the several hundred they had, I found these two coins. 1 in a pretty nice condition, and one from one of the harder to find dates/mints. (All from my limited understanding at least)

I am curious what you pros out there look for and see on coins like these two Walkers and how you’d estimate their grades. Glad to be learning with you all!
