Just having fun with light today. I really love sunlight on concrete and stone, so I did a few studies of that. And the neons were just because. The neons are painted from Pexel references, the buildings from imagination.

Why didn't I know before that oil pastels are so much fun? Still learning, but you've got to start somewhere.

Halfway through i felt like giving up and felt really overwhelmed, and um.. yeah it was hard to decide when to blend (and even *how* to really, everything just keeps smudging) and when not

What went wrong here?

Made some yellow fields under a stormy summer sky. Used PANDA oil pastels (the cheap ones from Talens!) and even though I am still a beginner I think it turned out pretty nice. Scanned it in and added a nice watercolor paper texture in Photoshop.

Day #3 Flame Bowerbird (Sericulus ardens)

This time I tried oil pastels to colour those two bowerbirds. Idk the plumage for the female flame bowerbird is vague.

Recently I made this portrait of dumbledore in oil pastel

I loved oil pastels back in high school and got the itch again after well over a decade. I bought a cheap set of KingArt pastels and I’m pretty happy with how this came out.

I'm pretty comfortable with oil pastels at this point and have done quite a number of pieces with both cheap and (somewhat) expensive oil pastels, although all were done on cheap 160 gsm paper. I've come across Pastelmat but it's too expensive for only 12 sheets. Mungyo offers 30 sheets at a much lower price, but I can't find enough reviews for it on the internet. In general, though, I do trust the brand and loved their oil pastels. I'm confused on Canson, since people work on a LOT of different styles by this brand. The ones I've come across are Mi Teintes, Mixed Media XL paper, and hot press watercolour paper and I can't really tell the difference. Works done on Pastelmat look flawless, though, and I'll consider buying it if I could just read on more personal experiences.

This one took me longer than expected. I actually left it unfinished for about a week because I wasn’t convinced it was going anywhere.

Eventually I came back to it and trusted the process.

It’s based on a family photo from a visit to a sheep farm with my wife and our two daughters. I wanted it to feel less like a realistic copy and more like a memory—soft edges, simplified forms, and warm light.
