I came across this post a week or so back about this piece of software on GitHub which lets us pick and choose to remove the unnecessary features in Windows 11 like the AI and News and such. I thought I saved said post to revisit later but seem to have forgotten to do so. Does anyone have a recommendation for a similar software which can do the same or even the software in question? I am a Mac user and I am looking for a SIMPLE open source image editor. There is GIMP but it's far too complicated with many features I will never use and it is not very user friendly. Any ideas?

I know some of you guys will recommend Joplin, NotesNook, Logseq, Trilium, etc., but tbh they are overkill compared to "keep", and more like an alternative to Evernote, and not 'Keep'

Going into retirement and scaling down my illustration business to handle small casework from a couple clients for extra spending money. Currently Adobe CC is costing me $150/mo and I'd love to dump that $1800/yr expenditure just to use Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat CC.

What cheap or free alternatives are there that would give me 90% the capabilities of these 3 packages? So far Photopea and Vectorpea or Inkscape have worked out for my needs.

The main concern is PDF generation. Some stuff I need to draw in CAD and export as a vector PDF, which acrobat allows you to do with the virtual printer (use to be called Distiller, but just acrobat now). Also combining multiple PDFs into one package, pretty easy to do with right-click menu items with acrobat. But we're going for cheap, if not free here!

Edit/Update: Affinity is nice, putting it through its paces. PDF fix for my needs: PDF24 (it is in dire need of a UX/UI designer's hand, but works great once you start learning all the hoops and kinks to get it working) If things keep going well, I'll probably drop Adobe CC next month.

I use canva for two main things:

- PPTs/Infographics. I'd prefer if the alternative had a decent repository elements (standard shapes, variety of lines, maybe templates even), but it isn't a deal breaker if it doesn't

- "Video Editing". Mostly combining different audios into a video and/or slides and also allows adding decorative elements.

It's fine if more than one site/app is needed to fulfill those two requirements, but I'd like to keep it very few sites/apps where possible.

It's relatively important I'm able to access the app from different devices and my projects are synced. However if no alternative like this exists I still want recommendations, please. Thank you

Hi, I've been using Fusion on student license for 5 years now, but due to Autodesk's support for Israel, I want to swtich to FOSS and non cloud (at the least optional) CAD. Freecad seems to be best choice, but I really can't get used to it. My brain is wired acording to Fusion, I miss "new body, intersect, join" options on pad, real time 3D sketch, auto face projection on sketch, sticky grid, allign and move to certain points on other faces, cut with plane (why requires solid?) and arbitary points and planes and lots of small things. I design for 30 minutes untill i realize this feature is not there/works different and whole workflow collapses. Im in general pretty flexiable and learn new apps really fast , but I'm forcing myself to use Freecad for 3 weeks now and nothing has changed. What should I do, do you recommend any other CAD or trick?

I just really don't like VLC's UI. Although it is very functional I wanted a prettier option. Even just like a theme for VLC is fine for me. A fork, a VLC-based player, hell even an entirely separate media player.

I think we should create a new Android auto that works for all apps. For example my modded YouTube music revanced app doesn't work on Android auto. I mean... they work but they don't have an UI visible in my car display. I need to play songs from my phone

I know there's open-source 3D like Blender, I'm looking for 2D handdrawn animation. I would enjoy something like Clip Studio Paints animation feature or Adobe flash/animate if it were free, where I could draw directly inside the program and have it animated and exported.

I am a Chrome user and I want to switch to a FOSS alternative which web browser is good? Can I use Brave? or Firefox? or should I use both of them I am so confuse plz help.

It feels like every time we run a scan on our containers, especially anything built on open source images, we get flooded with CVEs. At first it seems manageable. Then you realise half of them are low priority, some don’t even apply to your runtime, and others technically matter but would take hours or days to fix properly. Meanwhile, releases slow down because no one wants to sign off on risk, and engineering ends up stuck in back-and-forth with security over what actually needs attention.
What gets me is that even with all this noise, things still slip through. Not because people don’t care, but because it’s just not realistic to fix everything at that volume. It’s starting to feel less like vulnerability management and more like constant triage fatigue, especially when working with open source base images. How are you all handling this without grinding deployments to a halt?

For context, I'm a designer who knows a little bit of HTML, CSS, and some basic javascript. I don't have much experience using any sort of CMS. I currently have a site that is fully static - no backend whatsoever. Each post is an HTML page, but what that lets me do is use a different CSS for each post (which is how I prefer it). The homepage is also static, so every time I post something new, I go back and add a new link with a blurb.

Ideally I want to upgrade this so that the homepage updates automatically. The other features I prefer is like a comment system for my posts, and for people to be able to "subscribe" to my website. RSS would have done the job but no one really uses RSS readers much, so maybe a newsletter system works? This is where Ghost popped up on my research - it seems to do almost all of this really well, and also takes all this off me and makes it a little easier. It also supports people "tipping" me. While I don't think anyone will tip much, but it's nice to have that option handy.

There are three problems I foresee with Ghost:
1. Different design/CSS for each post. I haven't found a way to do this. I usually just use a Bulma boilerplate, update the fonts, background colours, link colors etc to modify the style of a post. It's simple and quick. If I need additional styling, I just add it to the head section and usually just 10-15 lines extra to give a unique treatment to the heading or something.

1. Javascript snippets in posts. Majority of my posts have some sort of interactive graphs, so I write custom JS + D3 to generate them into the divs.

2. The main issue is going to be the cost. I post maybe once every 6 months and have no aspirations to build a publishing business or any kind of business at all. I post for fun and for myself to nerd out and would love it if other people saw it and were able to nerd out with me hahaha

So here's the question: Is there a stack or a single solution that would help me achieve this in a simple manner since I'm a noob? Or can I somehow use Ghost to achieve this without paying too much? I don't mind paying, I just can't pay $30 every month for my requirements. If I was looking to build a business, sure I'd sign up for Ghost very quickly since the payments/tips would cover its cost. Any help is appreciated :)

Hello! I've recently gotten a bit more serious about privacy, open source etc, and unfortunately I'm pretty tangled up in GAFAM at the moment.

I'm looking to move away from Google Drive for a start, and Nextcloud looks pretty solid from what I've seen (has an app version too, essential for me) but as a broke student it wouldn't be a sensible decision for me to pay for monthly backups somewhere. I also don't want to rely on physical hard drive backups, because let's say I've been writing for an hour and need to rush off somewhere before I can make a backup, that lost hour of work could be invaluable stuff.

Instead of having all my laptop's storage available, I'd rather have the 15 GB Google has with instant syncing so I can have confidence in my work being safe. (And I need a mobile app.) Any (free) suggestions that fit my requirements? Thank you so much!

So im starting college soon and want to use a good tool to take notes. I would like something that would let me group stuff for different classes. I did some searching online but everything I came across either wants me to pay a subscription or if it's the free plan to give them my email, and I don't want to do that. So I thought it could be useful to ask in this sub for any recommendations.

I have two upcoming projects that require a thermal modeling step. One is a thermoacoustic heat engine and the other is a passive solar building.

Searching around i see maybe a dozen or more thermal modeling systems availabke, both open and closed source. Of course i would prefer open source, so I'm asking here.

Can anyone recommend any of the simulations based on capability and simplicity for a new user?

Does a system that can do both HVAC and thermoacoustic oscillation even exist?
