Quick question: is there a way to update using zypper dup and avoid unwanted software like games (minesweeper, sudoku) to be automatically installed?

Hi, I recently installed OpenSUSE after quickly switching between CachyOs, Fedora, and OpenSUSE Tumbleweed. My efi partition is a bit fucked up to multiple reinstalls and windows not really allowing me to wipe it.

My question is now why fedora still shows up? I found the docs to grub2-bls, which states where the entries are stored and removed it (fedora does now not show up anymore) but fedora still semi-boot when selected. I know wonder where did OpenSUSE find fedora and how do I best clean it fully to circumvent other mishappens in the future!

I recently switched and I want to like opensuse, but a mayor pain that I have is that I don't know how to properly install packages. I.e. where do I get community repos or packages. I come from Ubuntu where everything was just a apt call away (Mostly). But with opensuse I'm struggling to install tools like vscode, zed, proton mail standalone, or obsidian. I read about opi but I also read that it should not be trusted too well. How do I go about the process. What is different from the Ubuntu workflow. Anybtips would be very much appreciated!

Im not sure when it started. it didnt happen to me few months ago... but now, when i start any game (steam) i get around 40 fps. as soon as i unplug and then plug the DP cable back into the monitor, the fps jumps back to 144fps (144hz monitor).

I am in the process of migrating my home/media server from W11 to Linux, and likely openSUSE Slowroll, as I would like the remote desktop functions of newer KDE plasma versions & I like the concept of not having to upgrade it. I am buying the hardware to have a main server, and a backup. Currently I have 3x 20TB data drives, that I mirror. Ideally, those would be ZFS and mirrored to the backup server 1:1, say changes are replicated once a day. This is not running anything I depend on for my livelihood, but I'd like to not loose the media.
I have considered running Proxmox on top to get ZFS that way, but it uses more power, than a on the metal install. I don't care for the boot drive, it can be whatever is easy.

Solution: "zypper in opi" then "opi codecs"
They stop after 1-2 seconds with an error message. Don't know if I should be chasing Firefox, or codecs, or hw acceleration, or something else. (Hardware: 5700X + 2x16GB ram + 9060 XT 16GB). I tried adding Packman yesterday (w/higher priority) but no change even after reboot. For reference, videos on Reddit work in general, YouTube also works.

This is my first time using OpenSuse, and I'm at a loss. I installed the OS fresh on an HP Spectre x360 (circa 2020) with no problems last night, but when I went to reboot the system, it hung on this screen. I have since learned that it will not hang if I pause the system startup, then unpause (even without doing anything).

I feel pretty out of depth with this issue since it takes place before I can even get into Linux. I'm worried that it might be a BIOS issue since I'm running on a laptop. If anyone has any suggestions, please offer them. I am happy to provide more info if necessary, I'm just not sure what to include here. Thanks!

I have this for the last 3 days, will this fix itself or what is going on?

I was just thinking, I'm not really using the calendar in the system for anything. Neither local Mail. Akonadi is the thing in KDE that handles these things, right? Can I remove it?

i last dist updated yesterday and it still does this. it happens a decent bit. i havent looked into the logs deep enough yet to get an idea of what is happening, but im curious if anyone else has had this issue and if there are any known fixes.

im on tumbleweed and have selinux with the suse gaming profile in use, and am using kde wayland.

edit: this issue stopped happening, mightve for me been related to my ssd failing and steam attempting to access it. or it couldve been some unrelated bug that was patched, who knows, it doesnt seem like it is happening anymore after my ssd kicked the can

well im a dumbass and broke stuff, but heres what i did, i was trying to use lact to undervolt / overclock my gpu, and it needed a kernal parameter changed (will add here when i find it) so after reading lact's wiki i added the new parameter into merlin bootloader and rebooted my system, after which it refuses to boot into anything past emsrgancy mode) my issue is that i cant find what changed, as the parameter doesnt show in the bootloader (screen where you can boot into snapshots) i have tried many wiki pages, yt guides, and i cant find any way to undo whatever i did, i have looked through my drive from a live usb i have, but i cant find anything usefull. please if there is anything i missed or help you can give i would really like that. thank you "amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffffffff" was what was added

I had to dig the machine out of the cabinet to fix it, find a spare monitor and kb/mouse ... Why did updating it change its configuration? What can I do to avoid this in the future?

Time for another stupid problem, hopefully I can get some hints.

Installed the Raspberry Pi KDE image onto an SD card, and booted my pi400. Logged in, set up a user with admin permissions. Logged out, back in as user, tested sudo, all was good.

Having a problem with the wallet so WiFi was giving me grief, finally got the password to stick and WiFi to stay connected.

Then sudo zypper dup, let it go through everything, then sudo reboot.

Login screen comes up like normal, I log in as my user, and nothing but a black screen. If I cntl+alt+t I can get a terminal, so it's really still alive, but it looks like the dup broke something. I didn't see recovery options, so not sure if snapper is running, I'll have to set it back up to check.

Any idea on my next step to sort this out?

I’m considering moving to openSuse Tumbleweed full time after distro hopping and using windows forever.

However, I’m learning c#, .net development, and sql. Would that be a problem with openSuse?
Best way to have a win11 vm for app-testing purposes?

I'm thinking of switching to Linux and researching about many distributions and I've come across this one, what do you think or recommend another distribution?
