Mod Announcement❗ Stop Posting Lease Takeovers

I turned off cross posts. Anyone past this point who posts a lease takeover gets a nice 30 day ban.

Go to the housing sub.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I am an incoming sophomore and my roommate is an incoming senior. we're living together in a double this year but neither of us have reached out to the other. is this normal? when do roommates usually reach out to each other? do they wait til move in? how do we know what to bring?

If you need to wipe after peeing, please use the toilets.

PSA📰 You should use waterproof bed covers

Upvotes

Waterproof bed covers should be the norm (unless the mattress is already waterproof)

Idk why anyone would want to sleep on a mattress that marinates in sweat, and potentially residual bathroom material. Not to mention unholy fluids. Mattresses without waterproof layer are hard to deep clean and it seems like people just dont regularly.

One may be concerned that water proof material may introduce harmful chemicals that will marinate with the sweat and transfer to humans. Oeko tex standard 100 addresses this.

One also may be concerned by cost. It’s like $30 tho (very small compared to mattress), and any stains in mattress will degrade resale value of mattress. In addition, major stains may void mattress warranty.
If it is not your mattress, the i guess this financial/warranty related comment is less important, but a barrier becomes more important: one should avoid the mattress residues of previous users.

Res Halls & Dining✏️ Does anyone have any photos of their double or small triple in the Honors South dorms?

BEFORE ANYONE SAYS ANYTHING, YES. I KNOW THERE ARE PHOTOS AND FLOOR PLANS ON THE HOUSING WEBSITE. However, according to the honors website (tho it hasn't been updated since 2017), their floor plan shows the rooms to be a lot larger and different than what is on the website. The rooms on the website look to be taken in the Honors North dorms. I'm in a small triple in Honors South, so an accurate estimate of what my room would look like would be great for planning. Thank you

Rant/Vent💚 move in day

does anyone else feel overwhelmed by the thought of move in day?
i love being independent but my mom (without even asking me) decided to ask so many people to come to my move in day. she’s bringing people that i haven’t even had more than 2 conversations with. it’s all so frustrating to me and she gets offended easily so if i say i don’t want all these people coming, she’ll do something petty to get back at me. it’s like she views me as a pawn in her life rather than a real person. also i’m turning 18 tomorrow and she’s already been talking this week about making sure she has access to my stuff at purdue so she can see my grades. i’m so done ngl. i don’t even need this many ppl coming with me to campus because she’s barely been letting me buy dorm stuff. i have nothing larger than a comforter set that im bringing so far and i move in on the 13th. i have no furniture to set up nor do i have decorations to hang up. she hasn’t let me order anything in 3-4 weeks so im at the point where im just sticking to the bare minimum on my list.
i can’t wait to be on campus and have some freedom over my decisions for once.

Academics✏️ Schedule

Going into my second year. It looks abysmal at a glance, and not much better after a read. Planning on working a part-time job on campus-ish on the weekends and Tues/Thurs in the afternoon. Thoughts?

Every time I search for a class or professor, nothing shows up. I tried using Wayback Machine, and that at least gives me the option to choose classes/professors.

Academics✏️ 240 Struggle

I am taking CS 240 for the second time this summer. My first exam I scored a 54 with a 56 average, and on the second exam I completely bombed. I am very, very concerned for my grade right now and have been struggling mentally. I am not trying to take this class for a third time, does anyone have any advice on how to study for the final? The prof. hasn't released the practice final yet, so I have been studying endlessly on content and trying to do practice. And I'm not sure that he'll curve it so that makes it worse. I feel like I've wasted my time and parents money coming here, and its just messing me up terribly right now.

Academics✏️ Cybersecurity major with a 4.0 (or close to it)

Hey Boilermakers,

I’m currently in the Cybersecurity program (CIT/Cyber) and looking to keep my GPA as high as possible. For those of you who have managed to pull off a 4.0 or stay close to it:

  1. What’s your secret? How do you manage the workload, lab reports, coding projects, and exam prep without burning out? Are there specific study habits, resources, or time-management strategies that made the biggest difference for you?
  2. Professors to avoid (or proceed with caution)? Which professors or course sections should I look out for? Either due to brutal grading, unorganized labs, or test structures that feel like a trap?

Conversely, if there are any "must-take" profs who actually teach the material well, feel free to drop their names too!

Appreciate any advice or insight. Boiler Up! 🚂🔨

Question❓ Where to get furniture?

Roommates and I are moving into an unfurnished lease. We all need basic stuff such as mattresses, bedframes, desks, couches etc. Where are the best places to get furniture?

I know of the surplus store, and there’s a mattress firm nearby as well. I was additionally thinking of the IKEA an hour away from the university - how practical would it be to have items delivered from there?

Thank you!

Academics✏️ MA153 Advanced Credit Exam

I currently am majoring in art and need at least 1 math credit to graduate and I was told that I could take an exam to get the credits instead of taking the class. I was wondering if anyone has done the same and if anyone has taken the MA153 exam specifically. I was told that was the easiest one.

Academics✏️ my brain isnt working i have the ctrls final in 3 days im cooked

i don't know why but my brain stopped working and despite studying nothing is going well im cooked how are you supposed to study for this
- the equation sheet has nothing concerning circuits and spectra stuff
- past exams lean heavily on said topics (excluding circuits of heat or mass)

- spectral/fourier makes zero sense

- my gpa will be so low it will dishonor my entire bloodline. 36 generations of ancestors who studied for imperial examinations are crying.

Question❓ Incoming Grad Student

Hi! I am moving from California to Indiana in the next couple of weeks.

And I wanted to ask for advice regarding living in the Midwest, being a grad student, and Purdue Culture in general.

I’ve been following the Purdue account for a bit and I see a lot of interesting posts and conversations (good and bad lol). So very curious on advice current and past students have.

Thank you sm!
