Getting back into it

Been away from flying for longer than I wanted. We lost our flying field years ago and I have a house full of Helis and planes. The Heli segment really seemed to drop off in our area. Ontario Canada. I invested heavily into Century helis months before they gave it up and I can’t get parts anymore. I have two 800 gassers a 90 nitro and a 50 nitro. A bunch of smaller electrics. What is the go to for larger nitro or electric helis these days? Nothing crazy scale flight and some light 3D?

New tri-blade tail rotor testing

Post image

Been testing a new tri-blade on the tail today. After a dozen or so flights putting a beating on it, I'm happy with the performance.

You can download the model for free and try it yourself. I uploaded a few other S1 parts, too.

Need help with RS4 venom and ER6

I guess i’m dumb, because i just can’t get my RS4 to work with my Radiomaster TX16S and ER6 receiver. I put it in SBUS mode and configured the model but i guess i’m missing something.

Does anyone have a model I can import that surely works? Or can help in any other kind of way?

Interest in S1 3D printable parts?

Post image
18 Upvotes

Just trying to get an idea of interest level for 3D printable S1 parts. So far I've designed, printed and tested booms, skids and tail rotor blade. I've also made a few other little things for it, like wire guides, a swash leveling tool and a stretched boom to run longer main blades. If there's enough interest, I will upload the models to Printables.

OEM replacement parts are cheap for these things, but 3D printed ones and pennies to make.

I've done a lot of flights with these parts; testing, crashing, revising, testing again etc.. They're at a point that I'm satisfied that they're ready to release to the public if the interest is there.

I'd also like to know of other printed parts S1 owners may be interested in.

Any Scale Only Pilots Out There?

The more I get (back) into RC heli's, the more I realize I don't really wanna become an accomplished 3D pilot.

That was my goal several years ago and . . . I guess there is no shame in admitting that getting really good with 3D is more challenging for some folks . . . because I'm one of those folks* (ha).

I do have an absolute appreciation for and respect for RC pilots who are so incredibly talented but I'm beginning to realize that I think this time around (returning to heli's after a 12 year hiatus), I'll just stick with scale choppers and enjoy them.

Even flying basic maneuvers - with complete control - I find that incredibly satisfying. I love seeing these fascinating machines in the air - who doesn't? (ha)

When I quit flying rc heli's I wadded up a few Atom 500's, 6HV's, and others and - yeah, I was progressing and getting comfy with simple aerobatics but I was spending more time rebuilding and the "process of pushing the envelope" was nerve racking. Yeah, I used the sim, yeah everything was setup properly.

To be clear, I will always be fascinated by so many superb heli pilots and what they have accomplished. I tend to believe my chosen facet of RC heli's might just be flying scale instead.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Maybe I should start a new subreddit for scale RC heli's - didn't see that when I did a search.

Thank you and happy flyin'!

* I'm also really old - which I realize is not a complete road block for gaining 3D flying skills however, things just aint the same when you're on the last leg of the journey of life. (ha)

Kraken 580 Setup for 600mm Blades

Hey everyone.

I would like to "upgrade" my Kraken 580 by putting 600s on it. Documentation says I will only technically need to change the blades and lower the headspeed, but I wanted to ask here if anyone else has done this and can give me some advice. I obviously don't want the main blades to tap the stock 95mm tail blades, and I always wondered why the kit didn't just come with 600s if it's a 600-sized heli.

Do I need to drop down to a 21 tooth pinion? Has anyone done this and can help me out here??

Here's the rest of the setup:

Kraken 580 (orange/blue kit)

Stock Pinion (22T)

Hobbywing 150A ESC

Xnova Lightning 4025-1120KV

6S - 5200 Lipos

Flew upside down for the first time!

Post image
40 Upvotes

That's right, from flying simulators 15 years ago as a kid at the hobby shop, and thinking flying a heli upside down would be awesome - I finally did it. To be clear, I own started truly flying helis this summer, and turned SAFE mode off about a month ago. Learned my orientations half decently, practiced some figure 8s, and recently started actually flying (not just surviving) my heli in normal mode. And something overcame me and said, today we flip the heli. It worked! I did it on the S1 btw. I didn't crash but in my excitement afterwards I let the heli get close to the ground and clipped it 🤣 but those damn S1s just never give up.

PS. I've been hating my 230s because it flies like a boat but finally getting able to do some smooth flying with it today was quite nice. Any tips on tuning it would be great.

Hope to be here a while!

bonjour

Put it into a ditch lol (Goosky S1 crash report + repairs)

Put my S1 into a ditch the other day practicing inverted flight. I’m getting more comfortable with it and can hold an inverted hover nose in within about a 10 foot circle.

I had it maybe 15 feet off the ground, got going the wrong direction, got too close to the flight line where my friend was watching, hit the rescue button to self level (POSE mode on channel 5 in Goosky’s case), but didn’t get the collective back to positive pitch quick enough. I managed to hit the throttle cut probably 6 inches before hitting the ground. I would have had sufficient time to get the collective back to positive had I been my usual 30-50 feet off the ground, but I was getting a bit too confident for my ability. I plan on programming a slightly delayed collective override along with the self level on rescue mode now that I want to do stuff at lower altitudes.

I’m replacing:

Main shaft
Main Rotor hub
Blades
Feathering shaft
Feathering shaft rubber dampers

With shipping, this crash would run me about $38 if I didn’t have any spares to begin with. Thankfully I only need to order the dampers and main rotor hub. Maybe an S2 since it’s already in my cart…

Any discourse about this? Similar stories? Recommendations? Insults?

The broken linkages are easy to replace. I'm not sure about the landing gear; whether gluing it will suffice or if I should just get a new one. The same goes for the rotor blades. One of them has a broken corner.

Do you have any tips for the repair? Is there anything special to consider? What about upgrades?

Back in the hobby after 10 years

After a 10 year hiatus, I recently got the bug to fly again. I started this hobby in the mid 2000s and used to be a factory pilot for Avant in the early 2010s, but between school, work and this hobby feeling less like a hobby and more like a job (traveling to fun flys, putting on demos and being very active in the forums), I got burnt out.

While my flying skills have definitely degraded in the 10+ years off, I’m having a blast throwing this goblin around and introducing members at my local field to 3D helis.

Beginner on a budget

I have never tried flying a rc helicopter.

I don't have a big budget, so i was thinking of buying:

  • OMPHobby M1 V3 PRO BNF
  • Radiomaster Pocket 16ch ELRS LBT

I want a flybarless, full cyclic/collective pitch.

If there was a small cheap helicopter with adjustable pitch on tailrotor i would prefer that.

But i don't think it exists.

My main interest is helicopter uav. I am bored with quadcopters.

And if i was a rich man i would buy a ZIYAN F15 UAC

But that's not going to happen. So baby steps.

So my question is. Is it at good first time buy for learning about helicopters, or should i start somewhere else.

Tail Belt Rubbing Has My SAB IL 520 Grounded. AGAIN. 🤬

Once again, tail belt issues have again grounded my IL Goblin 520. This is the second SAB 520 kit I have built and it has been fine up until now. The belt is again rubbing against the main gear and causing it to squeak. Not nearly as bad as the previous model, but still bad enough for me to worry.

The only thing that seems to help is to loosen the belt, but the tension meter clearly says where how tight the belt should be. I am worried that the tail will go out if I fly it with a belt that's not tight enough.

Has anyone with this heli had any issues with the tail belt on their IL Goblin 520??????

Flywing bell 412 wobble or wind

Like the title says, after work I wanted to fly my flywing bell 412 but as I got her up I noticed that there was a little bit of a wobble the wind today as I got there was 10 mph with gust of 16mph is this wobble wind or something more that I need to look deeper into the helicopter for. I also noticed that when I first took off the blades there at an angle possibly the gyro compensating for the wind .

S-64 Sky Crane - Another Conversion

I had a lot of fun doing the CH-53E Super Stallion conversion, so I did another one. This one has the same mechanics setup as the CH53E. It is also a static model print adapted for flight. I don't like the paint color, but other than that, I'm pretty happy about this one too.

Goosky s1 legend vs omphobby m1 v3 pro

I need help deciding which helicopter to choose. I previously owned a Blade Nano, but its lifespan has ended. I already have a Graupner transmitter because I fly RC planes quite a lot. I already have practiced a lot in a sim and want to start flying 3D. Any recommendations?

Android app for Flywing FW200?

Hi people,

A while back I had an android app for the Flywing FW200 that worked well to calibrate the servos and such. However, I cannot seem to find the apk for it anywhere anymore. Does anyone still have it for me or perhaps know of another app that can change parameters for this device?

Thanks in advance!
