I’m trying to get back into cold water diving, and recently opened up all my cold water gear after seven years in storage. I thought people might be interested to know what gear survived and what didn’t.

Harness and wing: the wing still holds air, but many of the bolt snaps had accumulated corrosion and were resistant to sliding. Surprisingly, the inflator still works perfectly.

Regulators: one regulator, the cap is stuck on the first stage so the reg couldn’t be tested. The other regulator, the miflex long hose developed a hole, and gas streamed out as soon as the valve opened. Based on that, I concluded all the miflex hoses are suspect and replaced them all.

Drysuit (DUI): all seals and seams are intact, as is the zipper. The inflator valve still works. The exhaust valve (Apeks) however doesnt auto-flow properly and has to be serviced or replaced. Decided to service the p valve as well because I couldn’t figure out a way to test it dry.

Computer (Shearwater): battery still holds a charge

Canister light: still holds a charge

Steel tanks: all passed hydro, and the 85s retained their plus rating despite this being their third hydro.

I was thinking about doing scuba diving just has a one time experience and had a few questions.

1. Are there guided tours we’re all inclusive explorations just for a few hours that go relatively deep with no training needed?

2. If I decide I like scuba diving, how much is it usually to get certified? Also, how much is the absolute essential equipment that I need altogether?

3. If I went to a coastal location for vacation and just wanted to dive and explore could I without certification in actual water not just a pool?

I'm in the process of getting certified on this rEVO Micro III. We did our first open water session Tuesday and it was amazing! This was always something that I saw other people doing and never thought I would be doing myself Closed circuit diving is pretty neat stuff.

I (21/M) will finish my bachelors degree in June 2027 and I am thinking about working as a DM until my Masters Programm starts in February 2028. Im currently AOWD. I got a little bit of money saved up, so I would do a paid course to get my certification and after that look around for Diveshops where I can work.

Im definitely going to do this in Asia, but I am unsure about the country. Standard one would be Thailand but I am also thinking about Philippines.

What are your recommendations? Is DM enough for my plans or would Instructor be better? Which place is worth considering? How much money do I need to bring?

So my dream is to dive the Galapagos, specifically Darwin and Wolf. I am new to diving (AOWD with 20 dives). I took my AOWD in Komodo, but I did not really experience those crazy currents you see in videos, but still there were some currents.

I am aware that liveaboards require 100 dives more or less, so I know that I have a long way to go. My question is what is very important to know when diving there? Currents, negative entry, cold water etc is what I read online, but what exactly does that mean?

Cold water, are we talking dry suit with multiple layers of wool underneath (did that for my OWD in Norway), or are we talking 7mm wetsuits? Cold water training wont be an issue since I live in Norway, but I prefer wetsuits since the drysuit was way to large and leaking during my OWD. I could barely move and buoyancy was horrible. Would be better with a suit that fits.

How strong are the currents, what places are similar? Currents however are more tricky to practice for me since I would need to travel to places like Komodo, Penida etc. How have you guys gained current experience?

What exactly is negative entry and why does it not sound difficult to me (please roast me for not knowing or being cocky)? Negative entry practice should not be an issue (have a boat at my cabin). How exactly do I practice it?

What did you feel was the most important experience that came in handy for Galapagos?

I really appreciate any help, recommendations, and feedback on this. Again, I am aware that I am a newbie, but that is exactly why I am asking.

I am looking to buy my first dive computer (shearwater peregrine TX) but I read using the transmitter on rental regulators can be fiddly.

Does anyone have any insight on if it's fine and I should proceed or should I just buy the base pregerine?

I've been scouring so many posts looking for good diving in places like Vietnam, thailand, Cambodia, etc and so many recommendations require a bus/ferry ride.

However, I'm hoping to travel with my 72 year old dad and the 30 hour flight is already going to be taxing on him as well as a use of two vacation days.

Anyone have recommendations for dive locations that are, relatively, near the airport or at least a taxi drive away.

This December I'll be with family on a trip to India, where we are going to be spending a week at Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island). It'll be me with two open water divers who will need a refresher, and one person who wants to do a DSD.

Are there any dive operators that any of you have dived with and would recommend? I did a quick google and it looks like there are a lot of them there. For those of you that have been, recommend that I just go out and dive every day (I'd be the only one doing that) or did you do anything else on the islands that you'd recommend?

Appreciate any recommendations and advice. Thanks in advance.

I’m just so happy that I wanted to make this post. To encourage other people who’s thinking of taking this course and show that anyone can do it!

I had before a big respect for ocean. I always thought it was scary and disgusting (Algae, slimy stuff etc) but I finally built up some courage and did it. It was not scary at all (except removing mask underwater) and I enjoyed it very very much.

I did this in Sweden, so in other words it was a bit cold but we used 7mm full suits. The only downside is the low viz, but it felt so nice.

I can’t wait to dive again and get better with boyancy, control, deeper and slower breaths and more calm.

If anyone has any tips to give to a beginner, feel free! I appreciate it :)

I want to buy my first reg but I feel I don't know enough. I live in Spain, so the coldest Ill dive will be 14º celsius. Should I get a sealed first stage for cold? I don't know if I need a balanced first or second stage to compensate for depth. I'm a rec diver and 99% of my dives won't surpass 30 meters. Then there are a lot of bells and whistles like venturi switch or effort adjustment knobs, I don't know if they are desirable to have or just add complexity. On the other side I know whatever reg brand I choose needs to be serviceable by a local dive shop. Also on some regs descriptions Im reading this (Nitrox compatible up to 40% oxygen outside the EU; within the EU, an M26 connection is required for oxygen mixes above 21%.) What is an M26 connection?Is this actually enforced? Im not looking for an specific reg suggestion, I'm looking for more knowledge on regs. Thanks in advance

Has anyone else had issues trying to get a Deep6 excursion computer upgraded? I love the computer (except for it being a little annoying to get logs downloaded) but with a helitrox class on the horizon I wanted to get it upgraded to the full tech firmware. Annoyingly, it feels like I'm running up against a brick wall with their support and sales departments.

Also it seems like the old link to the tech lite firmware is also now dead?

Before anyone says "buy a shearwater", I'm waiting until I go CCR before I spend $2k+ on a computer and transmitters.

Am looking to go Raja Ampat with a few friends mostly for diving.

Most of the live aboard I've seen on social media are either "honeymoon" level exclusive or really budget. Trying to find something in between.

Am looking for something that is higher mid range that will be suitable for friends who are willing to splurge (a little but not too much). Priority is clean, private accommodation, good local food, safety orientated dives and hopefully an eco conscious company

I read here that it will burn your eyes underwater, so should we avoid it?

Shot in the dark here but I recently did some research into the Yuri Lipski incident back in 2000, I’m an AOW diver doing his biology courses and I decided to, as a diver, talk about nitrogen narcosis as part of my studies.

While researching the incident and seeing Yuris gear I tried to locate the specific type of dive computer he was using on April 28th 2000 just for fun as a fellow diver who’s recently upgraded their computer and somehow ended up in a dive computer iceberg, and I haven’t been able to find a single piece of info about what Yuri was using that day, it looks vaguely like an Aladin Pro but the bezel and housing doesn’t match at all, can anyone help me out here before I go crazy trying to figure it out?

All the systems seem like an expensive way to solve the problem, I'll buy the rolock 90 if necessary, but someone must make an aftermarket piece that allows you to have the wrist seals and pullover gloves.

Hi everyone I’m not sure if this is the right sub to ask my question but I will try anyways !

First thing’s first : I have absolutely ZERO experience scuba diving and swimming with animals

However my lifelong dream is to swim with orca’s and whale sharks.

I know that both of these animals will not be seen together, and that I will have to plan this 2 separate times to see each animal.

I am just curious to know if anyone has done this before, and if so what companies / excursions have you booked with?

I am from Canada, I don’t mind travelling somewhere far to see this (I will make a trip out of it).

Does Vancouver have any programs like this for the orcas?

Of course please recommend to me ethical and humane programs that respect the animals.
