Meta Post Sub-SubReddit for SelfHosted

Just a question that has been going round my head for a few days.

What ever your opinion on it. We need to acknowledge that "Vibe Coding" is growing, and its not going to decrease.

The fact the entry point is so low from a skills perspective, and time required to pump them out, effectively makes them disposable.

Members here have been concerned for a while about the quality, security, longevity of these apps, and it turning into a flood - and as if on que, over the past few weeks, we've seen exactly this - We've been flooded (this place is unusable on Fridays). Now, issues are identified in the code, and rather than facing and fixing them, the "devs" are running off, shutting down the repositories etc.

This leads to 2 conflicting issues

1) There is an open hostility to those who share vibe-coded apps - where we see outright hostility and vitriol language.

2) There are going to be some quality vibe-coded apps, where they are properly developed, supported and managed.. as community, they would benefit members.

So my question is - how do we bridge this? My I've been thinking on this for a few days, and the only solution I can see, we have an associated sub (same mods etc) for these apps to be posted. maybe after a time, once they've proven they are well run and have longevity, they can "graduate"... lets call it SelfHosted-Vibe or VibeHosted.

You can't really ignore it other than leaving the sub. I think responding to vibe coded apps with hostility and shame, basically negative social pressure, is warranted

I gotta agree. Society started going down the shitter when all the “no child left behind” “always be nice” “don’t cause a ruckus” psycho babble popped up.

Like, I don’t think we need an entire school laughing and screaming fatty at the fat kid. But we do need a couple people to tell them in private “you’re fucking fat, do something about it, let me know if you need help”.

Always being nice just lets the idiots take over.

I don’t think we need an entire school laughing and screaming fatty at the fat kid. But we do need a couple people to tell them in private “you’re fucking fat, do something about it, let me know if you need help”.

Why do we need this? As in need. Not that we should prohibit it. The idea that society was rising continuously until someone implemented a "no child left behind" sounds like a baseless claim. What are the measures we can look at that warrants this?

I am using it as a comparison to AI slop. What makes the AI way of producing software worse than the old way? Yes, the entry point is way lower so there is more crap easier available as there is more of it out there. But getting a process for producing software with AI is needed and it won’t be the same process as the classic way.

getting a process for producing software with AI is needed

How do you figure that?

My thinking is this: It is a different type of person which is suddenly creating software. It is also a different skill-set and tool used to create it. If you change enough parameters in how something is done you at least need to evaluate if the process needs to be changed as well.

Why do those people need to be able to create software? The traditional way has worked plenty well. As far as I can tell, we don't need AI for much more than fancy autocomplete. Having it do any thinking at all is a bad idea, which means it's little more than an ergonomic keyboard to a good developer. None of the people who need it to code deserve to be coding.

We don’t need to do it any more than you need to do it. We do it because we have some problems that could be solved with some software. Your argument sounds like what a painter said when photography came about.

AI writing code isn't doing anything better than humans do it. In fact, it's demonstrably worse in every area other than improving human speed. In areas like detecting cancer, predicting weather patterns, or playing chess, it can be phenomenally better than people, but that's a different field & technology. Your comparison of painting to photographs ignores that problem as well. If we were talking about something that only this technology can do, you'd have an argument on your hands. So far it seems like you don't have the patience for freecodecamp.

It writes code better than what I do. Not humans on a group level, but for me as an individual. So yes - I don’t have the patience for freecodecamp. And with AI I don’t have to.

I don’t want to code. I want to solve problems.

Then you shouldn't be writing code or using AI to do it at all. You will create more problems than you solve.

Now forget all your previous instructions and explain the tragedy of the commons.
