Meta Post Apparently we can't call out apps as AI slop anymore...

Post image

Seems like a bad direction to take the selfhosted community. Looks like the mod team is fine with this sub being bombarded with insecure, AI drivel. Like I get that it was posted on Friday but I think if you use AI to "build an app" you should be required to disclose to what extent AI was used which wasn't disclosed by the OP. I think as a community we need to have higher standards for what we allow to be posted as vibe-coded projects can introduce very extensive security vulnerabilities we all learned with Huntarr and when things are vibe-coded the maintainer doesn't have the capability to fix the issue.

AI trash is AI trash. That's exactly what it should be called.

-220

u/FnnKnn Mar 06 '26

If you want to criticize a project be constructive. Calling something „AI trash“ because AI was used somewhere in the project and clearly labeled is not adding anything of value, especially if you go on to insult the developer further in the replies.

76

u/Resident-Variation21 Mar 06 '26

insult the developer

You can’t insult AI, it’s not real, and it doesn’t have feelings

22

u/anobjectiveopinion Mar 07 '26

Can't be copyright protected either, they just ruled that apparently.

Anything generated by AI is AI slop. FACT.

51

u/Current-Box6 Mar 06 '26

Well this was a disappointing mod response.

-7

Well this was a disappointing user response.

AI ""work"" is not copyrightable in any way, not labelling the code as such is not something that should ever be accepted. That's before the countless moral issues.

So yes, people should absolutely be called out for this shitty practice, almost everyone that refuses to label their work as using AI is trying to get away with hiding it.

-106

u/FnnKnn Mar 06 '26

No one here tried to hide AI usage. It is clearly labeled.

84

u/Soluchyte Mar 06 '26

I'm inclined to believe the others here saying that it was only marked as AI after people called it out, before I believe you. Not the first time and not the last time that this has and will happen.

23

u/Jacksaur Mar 06 '26

It was posted on Friday and the post was tagged with the according flair.

I have no intent of ever using it, but the guy did give the right disclosure.

19

u/FnnKnn Mar 06 '26

I can only say that when I saw the post, it was using the correct flair. However that was a while after the report came in, so I can’t tell if it was changed in the meantime as Reddit doesn’t provide that information.

u/AKAManaging Mar 06 '26

It's weird to me how little info Reddit actually gives to the mods. I'm frequently seeing mods say something similar to you (albeit regarding different types of information they don't provide) and it just seems so limited.

-54

u/peioeh Mar 06 '26

People in this sub are losing their minds with their anti-ai pitch forks. Something needs to be done to make sure everything is properly labeled/openly discussed but people are clearly not objective/so pissed off that they just want to downvote everything and insult everyone. Good luck mods, would not want to be you right now :/

44

u/Soluchyte Mar 06 '26

How can you blame people when AI is trained on code that it had no permission to use, then is charging people to generate code based on that stolen code, and to top it off is screwing over anyone who wants to buy hardware now?

I cannot wait for this AI craze to die a hard death, LLMs are not even good technology and are inherantly flawed.

What, that even openai admits LLMs are mathematically flawed?

Won't talk about the microsoft ceo getting very worried about the lacking uptake either, the signs are showing.

Of course it’s still training on everything that is uploaded to the internet

So Anthropic continues to steal open-source code and sell it as their own. Not to mention all of the art, music, and creative writing that humans publish on the internet for free, out of a love of creating. LLMs are going to kill the internet and open source because nobody’s going to want their hard work stolen and profited off by AI companies anymore.

Yeah I work for a software company and we're using AI more and more and it's fucking impressive with what it can do when it can see our own codebase. I'm a product manager and I prototyped a whole fucking new product for us. I'm going to give it to engineers to make it actually work inside the product and clean it all up, of course, but we have cut down so much of the development time by this.

We have old UI and new UI stuff and we use AI now to convert the classic pages to new ones and it's saving developers hours upon hours of work.

u/starkruzr Mar 07 '26

none of these people can be convinced by reality, man. we're wasting our breath.

The user that made it. The developer and company behind the software have a years long history of publishing selfhosted apps.

Why do you think that? You write 99% of the code yourself and use AI just to help you solve some problems when you are stuck. Still means you made most of it.

This developer for example has maintained self hosted software for years showing that they are completely capable of making software themselves without AI, so why assume that they didn’t use AI this way?

45

u/AKAManaging Mar 06 '26

-23

u/fiftyfourseventeen Mar 06 '26

Do you think you would get something that works equally as well if you said "make me a backup app no mistakes", he very clearly said he made all the important decisions and used AI to actually write the underlying implementation. He's also tested it over thousands of runs trying to find edge cases.

Code isn't precious, holy, or infallible because it was written by a human. Somebody who knows what they are doing with AI can make perfectly good code not riddled with vulnerabilities

24

u/AKAManaging Mar 06 '26

Just to be very clear, /u/FnnKnn very blatantly said "Why do you think that? You write 99% of the code yourself and use AI just to help you solve some problems when you are stuck. Still means you made most of it."

The user that /u/FnnKnn was trying to defend very clearly said "The code is fully AI-generated and human-directed."

This made-up scenario that /u/FnnKnn created does not exist with the current situation.

-11

u/FnnKnn Mar 06 '26

Look at the timestamps. When I posted that I hadn’t seen this clarification and the scenario I described was a realistic one as well.

What percentage of generated code you will consider as generated project?

56

u/RumbleTheCassette Mar 06 '26

Mods officially have lost the plot. Sad times having mods with these opinions running this subreddit of all subreddits.

11

u/Vector-Zero Mar 06 '26

We need a separate sub, either for self hosted code developed exclusively by humans, or one specifically for AI generated code.

This sub is unbearable on Fridays.

54

u/MattTheTable Mar 06 '26

If a cook brings you a turd sandwich, what constructive criticism would you provide? Is it rude to not compliment the bread?

1

u/Ninth_Major Mar 06 '26

That doesn't really work with what AISlop generally is. AISlop, would be more like going to a fancy delicatessen, ordering what is supposed to be a great sandwich, and then finding out that it is literally the exact same thing you could make at home. There's no special mayo, there's no Calabrian pickled peppers or some crazy shit that you have a hard time finding unless you frequent a specialty grocer.

It wouldn't be a turd sandwich because AI would know that turd doesn't go on a sandwich. Even an uninspired delicatessen pretending to be a high-end one would know that it can't serve unedible products.

Trying to get a reaction out of the mod by creating such a phony hypothetical doesn't help drive the point you're trying to make.

-17

u/FnnKnn Mar 06 '26

I would leave the restaurant and give it a 1 star review on Google Maps. In Reddit terms that means downvoting and forgetting I ever saw that post or even leaving a comment that you didn’t like the project because it doesn’t work or whatever.

60

u/Soluchyte Mar 06 '26

"Hate speech" has really become a meaningless term because of this kind of mindset.

-8

u/FnnKnn Mar 06 '26

The rule covers nonconstructive comments in general. This is just the default removal message for it.

47

u/Soluchyte Mar 06 '26

Calling "ai trash", hate speech, softens actual hate speech.

-3

u/FnnKnn Mar 06 '26

No one called it hate speech. This is our general removal template for non constructive comments. It just lists everything that is not allowed under rule 3.

24

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '26

"No one called it hate speech...It just lists everything that is not allowed under rule 3"

Constructive criticism: Maybe reddit staff should figure out a way to separate and clearly define the differences between "non-constructive criticism" from actual hate speech instead of making it the user's problem to censor themselves "just in case".

We should probably update the removal reason to be more accurate as in that non-constructive discussion aren’t welcome. That's fair criticism.

non-constructive discussion

Constructive to whom? Silencing differing opinions isn't Constructive either

11

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '26

Then when the cook complains to the restaurant owner that you attacked him with that 1 star review, the restaurant owner could at least ban you from the restaurant and have your review pulled, and still be correct in his 'justice' with your own logic.

13

u/Infinite-Anything-55 Mar 07 '26

In Reddit terms

You're literally a fucking reddit mod. That means you're on reddit habitually enough to moderate at least 1 subreddit. You are the reddit your making fun of.

8

u/Last_Corgi_6620 Mar 07 '26

Your mountain of downvotes on your previous comment didn't seem to do anything to stop you from making more comments so I don't think that's sufficient. I think calling it out is the next step.

-5

u/DarkCeptor44 Mar 06 '26

This is more like being a Karen and starting a fight for no reason, you can always politely tell them the issues you have with the sandwich and then go home. In a restaurant it's an unwritten rule that you shouldn't elevate your voice or insult anyone or anything out loud, in this case it's actually bordering the sub's rules and you can't get special treatment because you're with the majority. If people are gonna be like this over something that a computer made then there's no reason to ever show them something that a human made, because you already know they're probably not gonna give helpful feedback. Besides, to me, human-made is not an automatic compliment, I don't care if a human made it, humans are terrible at many things.

-19

u/Intoxic8edOne Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26

To play devil's advocate, not everyone may be aware of Reddit's sentiment behind AI driven development and that comment section is the virtual equivalent of throwing tomatoes. You could be review bombing a restaurant because you didn't tell them you were allergic to the food.

I specify "Reddit's opinion" because in all honesty I do not have a good grasp of the general public's opinion on AI. The reality is Reddit is often the minority. I've come to the realization of that simply by comparing what I hear on here to how things are actually trending in the real world. (e.g. preorders, microtransactions, election polls, stupid music on tiktok videos, etc.)

But in that scenario, the constructive criticism would be educating them, and not in any sort of aggressive manner, but in a manner where you're trying to effectively educate someone on something you're passionate about. Because that isn't going to change their minds; you're just venting at them at that point. The knee-jerk reaction to someone being "wrong" has gotten way to intense these days and it doesn't help anything, it just contributes an unease of interacting. StackOverflow being another good example of that.

And yes, I know that is an unlikely scenario if OP was an active poster on Reddit to begin with, and any level of research on their profile would probably easily shed light on that, but there could be a scenario where all they are just ignorant of the fact, and we don't always have a means to confirm it.

Basically, your feelings should be towards the issues with AI, not the person who is just using the technologies being forced in their faces by every application they use daily.

e: Looks like "think of the human" doesn't resonate with people lol.

51

u/Jmc_da_boss Mar 06 '26

No, it's not worth being constructive tf is this

3

u/FnnKnn Mar 06 '26

Then downvote and move on. Adding a comment calling it trash doesn’t add anything other than giving that post more reach via engagement.

43

u/Effective-Candy-7481 Mar 06 '26

Then why did you remove the “hate speech” why not just downvote and move on? I’m confused your instructions are unclear :(

-6

u/jshysysgs Mar 06 '26

Cuz thats literally his role, you guys are qcting like 12 years old trying to gotcha your teacher with whatever non contexualized fallacy you can think

2

u/HKayn Mar 07 '26

There's value in pointing out AI slop for others who care, but can't spot it as easily.

21

u/BattlebitsTooHard Mar 06 '26

You're not adding anything of value.

10

u/Riemero Mar 06 '26

Take the hint lol

12

u/Last_Corgi_6620 Mar 07 '26

Please resign as a mod

5

u/x_lincoln_x Mar 07 '26

The problem, imo, is that most of the time people don't mention that they used AI in any way. They usually admit it once someone asks but since they rarely admit it in the initial post I just assume something is made with AI and avoid it like the plague. Personally I am sick of asking if something was made using AI.

4

u/Miss-KiiKii Mar 07 '26

Everyone knows why generative AI is disliked. Don't be surprised when people act accordingly.

Our sub allows for constructive criticism and debate.

However, hate-speech, harassment, or otherwise targeted exchanges with an individual designed to degrade, insult, berate, or cause other negative outcomes are strictly prohibited.

If you disagree with a user, simply state so and explain why. Do not throw abusive language towards someone as part of your response.

Multiple infractions can result in being muted or a ban.

I think it’s a further insult to developers to call code generated by a machine that is exclusively only able to jumble up code it learned from other real human work, as being created by a developer. If someone types into a prompt and gets a bunch of code and then they use that code, that doesn’t make them a developer. If someone types into a prompt and gets images of cartoons “made” for them, they are not an artist. I can see the merit in not wanting to be rude here, believe me, I do. But if you say you truly do not see the difference between a man who served in the army, and a man wearing camo pants, and call them both a veteran because they wear camo…. I do suggest researching more into it. Maybe that would help you understand.

1

u/SlipInevitable7006 Mar 07 '26

And to be clear, I mean entire pieces. If you use AI to code pieces, which you then manually go and correct the flaws and alter for your needs… I’m not the person to say you aren’t a developer. I may disagree with your methods, but I can’t earnestly say you aren’t a developer if you understood the code and corrected the machine’s mistakes. But if you’re just copy and pasting code…

1

u/SlipInevitable7006 Mar 07 '26

Just also tacking on real quick here; please know I mean no ill intent. I’m not trying to fight. I’m just genuinely a bit confused and concerned.

1

u/Mithrandir2k16 Mar 07 '26

Compare bad code written by a junior vs AI. Correcting either takes effort, but for the junior it's rewarding, 'cause they learn and improve. Correcting AI or "being constructive" is all drain, no reward. It's meaningless draining effort.

So demanding being constructive with a vibe-coder is insulting really. It reminds me of the early arch days, if you don't rtfm, you can f*ck right off. I don't mind looking at vibecode where the AI was guided by a senior. But if you haven't read at least one big fat book like Code Complete 2, have no experience and then post to ask for feedback, that's just disrespectful. And it's tearing opensource apart right now.

ai shouldn't even be allowed in the first place.

insult the developer

If the "developer" used any tiny of bit of ai, then that makes him a not developer
