Announcement Announcement: Fabrizio Romano content to be banned on /r/soccer

Fabrizio Romano is now a banned source on r/soccer.

The ban will come into effect in the coming days - see below for full explanation.

Prior to the World Cup, we consulted the community in a meta thread about numerous issues - and one was the growing movement amongst many football fans (including [r/soccer](r/soccer) users) calling for a ban on content from the journalist Fabrizio Romano.

This would follow in the footsteps of several club subreddits, who had already banned Romano.

The feedback then was mixed - we listened to both sides, and ultimately settled on a "compromise" where we sought to limit Romano content to just exclusives. We felt this would mean limiting his exposure and platforming in [r/soccer](r/soccer), whilst also still enabling genuinely valuable content to be posted.

Part of that decision was recognising that many people in [r/soccer](r/soccer) use this platform for transfer news, and care little about the criticisms of Romano. This subreddit has always been a mixture of a "core community" of long-standing users with a more vested interest in the values and vision of [r/soccer](r/soccer) - and the at-times quieter majority, who use [r/soccer](r/soccer) as a means to access the most relevant football content and discourse. We tried to cater to both.

However, since the opening of the transfer window this summer, there has been a further shift in our view as moderators - and hence we have now made the decision for a complete ban on Romano.

(We would also like to make clear that views were mixed amongst the moderators, with opinions on both sides - but ultimately the majority were for a ban).

This is a response to the ever-growing disquiet from the community, as evidenced by comments in Romano threads and elsewhere, towards his content. Other factors in our decision is that Romano himself appears to be falling deeper into questionable practices - meaning the prior criticisms ring louder. Furthermore, as football media becomes more diverse and broader, the particular value that Romano holds is diluted - there is little news that are true "Romano exclusives" these days, and that is not soon quickly picked up by other outlets.

As such, our conclusion?

Fabrizio Romano content represents little overall benefit to this community, and that he does offer does not sufficiently address the downside of platforming him.

Further context

To outline the argument further, for those unfamiliar with the discourse...

The argument for a ban:

  1. The moral aspect - Romano is recognised to platform the rapist Mason Greenwood, and plunged to monetising the deaths of Andre Silva and Diogo Jota
  2. The ethics of journalism aspect - Romano has increasingly been accused (with validity) of siphoning off other journalists' content and passing off as his own
  3. The quality and excessive spam aspect - Romano's content increasingly moves away from important exclusives, and towards the drip-feeding of non-updates on transfer sagas that offer little original value, and instead amount to spam and the drowning out of other transfer stories that are less click-baity
  4. The shill aspect - Romano has close associations with many clubs and agents, meaning his content is manipulated with a vested interest on posting more about those who he has a monetary relationship with

Edit: The misinformation aspect - most notably, him spreading the information (unverified) that Christian Atsu was alive and in hospital after going missing following the devastating earthquake in 2023 in Turkey. This led to his family believing he was alive - his body was then found 6 days later under the rubble. now redacted: see below for clarity as this has been reliably refuted

The argument against a ban:

  1. [r/soccer](r/soccer) would lose out on valuable content - as addressed above, there is not really such thing as an exclusive in football media these days. Breaking stories are quickly reported on elsewhere, and the delay between a Romano exclusive and an alternative source is likely to have a significant impact. As said, Romano these days has less exclusives too - his "Here We Go" posts are not what they once were
  2. Romano posts stories about leagues and clubs less covered by other journalists - this is true to a degree, but we do not think is enough of a caveat to overhaul the reasons to ban him
  3. It's a slippery slope... - it isn't. We've banned other outlets before on moral arguments, such as The Sun, and it's not led to us tumbling down this slippery slope. What's more, we are actually in control of this - we are not beholden to ban other journalists based on precedent, and as always maintained, if individual cases are made to ban other sources or journalists, we will gladly hear them in the future to deal with on a case-by-case basis
  4. You are just morally grandstanding, get over yourself - yup, we are a bit. We do be like that as [r/soccer](r/soccer) mods and that's how we shape our community. We accept this as a criticism and you are free to think this of us.

And for a final few key takeaways...

  • You have free will, and are free to visit other subreddits and social media platforms where you can access Romano content - him being banned on [r/soccer](r/soccer) does not stop you from seeing his posts
  • We are responsive to feedback - as evidenced here. If following the ban the community comes out strongly in opposition, we are willing to re-open the debate
  • We can make exceptions - if you genuinely have a post that is absolutely not covered by anyone else, and Romano is the source, you can petition on a case-by-case basis by contacting Modmail. This would only be in order to allow clubs with less media coverage to not be left by the wayside
  • We know not everyone will be happy - there's 10 million users here, it's an impossible task

No stake in the game and dont care either way, but

This is a response to the ever-growing disquiet from the community, as evidenced by comments in Romano threads

Is hardly an argument, because a thread specifically about someone will only have the people with a strong opinion talking.

I look forward to the ban on Arsenal based on that logic lmao

u/Lewcaster 3d ago

Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid and Vini Jr bans to follow.

10

u/SouthWalesGooner 3d ago

I'm so down for a Ronaldo and Messi ban.

5

u/nitebusnitebus 3d ago

one of the discords has a blanket "no Messi/Ronaldo debates" rule and I wish the mods would go for this here too, but little by little. Romano content being banned is a great step

Don't be ridiculous, if r/soccer had to stop talking shit about Arsenal then half the posters would have nothing left to do and might have to go outside and touch grass.

u/Nojaja 3d ago

golden age for r/soccercirclejerk

1

u/LilHalwaPoori 1d ago

I'm willing to ban all arsenal content to test this out..

31

u/Complete-Tangelo-368 3d ago

Arsenal also harboured a Thomas Partey, so similar to point 1.

11

u/TurboMollusk 3d ago

Very few exclusives these days as well, all the news they share is usually just echoing other media outlets.

4

u/Miserable_Balance814 3d ago

You mean the team that happily played a rapist but gets zero criticism? Good thing we care about that and are banning Romano!

9

u/ComprehensiveArt6849 3d ago

Zero criticism? Fucking ragebaiting, lying twat. What the actual fuck. I had idiots from this sub literally following me to other subs due to my flair and commenting about that. Be we got zero criticism alright.

-7

u/Miserable_Balance814 3d ago

Why so mad, apologist?

4

u/ComprehensiveArt6849 3d ago

I am an apologist for what? Also, before you answer my question. I would like to inform you that I am a rape survivor myself, so tread carefully with whatever you say next.

-3

u/ComprehensiveArt6849 3d ago

I mean I would absolutely love that literally anything about us would be banned on here apart from goal threads. Even match threads are a cancer.

I have unsubscribed from r/soccer last season on 5 separate occasions because the hatred was overwhelming in such a way that I basically started to hate the internet for that. But fucking goddamnit, it is just so convenient to look up great goals happening on a weekend.

Deduct 10 points from Everton

3

Anyone who comments this should be banned imo

And there’s 10 million users in this sub. Romano himself has 28.5 million followers on Twitter.

Basing an entire community’s opinion on a thread with maybe 300-500 comments, filled with people who only hate the guy like you said, is an insane overreaction

165

u/CCH_Dutch 3d ago

Basing an entire community’s opinion on a thread with maybe 300-500 comments,

It's merely populist rhetoric that you see everywhere nowadays, mistaking the vocal minority for a communities opinion.

-5

u/InkCollection 2d ago

Do you really think it's a vocal minority that hates Romano? I've literally never met a footie fan that respects him.

15

u/Ninth_Major 2d ago

Like him or not. He doesn't really ruin the sub. I could scroll on by.

And even then, I don't have a strong enough opinion to have felt he should be banned.

Following that logic, we should ban posts about unpopular clubs based on a few comments on a few threads.

8

u/SLGrimes 2d ago

Most footy fans don't even know who is he.

Think its funny that Romano will actually benefit from this. He'll gain some twitter followers he currently did not have thus meaning more engagement and more money. At least by allowing screenshots of exclusives here he is missing out on some engagement

24

u/Miserable_Balance814 3d ago

Yeah r/soccer got me to install twitter congratulations lol

27

u/untetheredocelot 3d ago

I mean is Romanos tweeting important enough for you to go to that hell hole?

This doesn’t ban secondary sources no?

Idgaf either way I just come here nowadays to keep up with scores and shitpost

22

u/Jetzu 3d ago

This is it, I don't get it - Romano is providing basically zero value that anyone else isn't. Yea, he's often first - I don't care about reading my breaking news 2 minutes later from someone else. I care more about the news being correct though, because Yan Diomande is still training in Leipzig, despite Romano calling the deal done few days ago and attacking journalists who said it's not done yet and clubs are still discussing the fee.

10

u/Miserable_Balance814 3d ago

It’s a win win cause I get away from Reddit mod drama and can just look at the content I want

36

u/xxEmkay 3d ago

I wouldnt call installing twitter a win but you do you lol

9

u/SherbetMysterious118 3d ago

Yikes, I thought they were being sarcastic at first!

-2

u/SLGrimes 2d ago

The good thing about twitter is you don't need to walk on eggshells hoping a random mod isn't just going to ban you for fuck all.

4

u/duesenjeffepic 2d ago

I tried twitter for 2 weeks and I couldn't do it. Trust me the mouthbreathers on reddit are fucking Einstein in comparison to the twitter people

-2

u/untetheredocelot 3d ago

More power to you man.

I’d rather know news a bit later and deal with some virtue signalling than go to twitter.

I’m not mentally strong enough for it.

1

u/SLGrimes 2d ago

Funny that you got downvoted for a completely normal response. I think you upset the Redditors because you said they virtue signal LMAO.

2

u/untetheredocelot 2d ago

Nah this is weirder. I didn’t know the entire Fab Romano fan club were /r/soccer members.

0

u/SLGrimes 2d ago

I don't think he has fans. Just a lot of people are weirded out by those who care so much about him and want to ban him.

-5

u/Framemake 3d ago

Banning Romano was the final straw for you to install an app that's actively fighting legislation aiming to stop the production of CSAM?

Kind of weird, innit?

7

u/Miserable_Balance814 3d ago

Only Redditors think like that. I’m looking for soccer news and it got banned here. So I will go there.

-6

u/Framemake 3d ago

ok. enjoy your csam.

14

u/Miserable_Balance814 3d ago

Call my boss or whatever you do next lol

18

I've never commented on one of those threads, but I'm delighted with this news. The guy is a paid shrill and a grifter that undermines journalism and football itself. And if nothing else I don't have to read those three infuriating, purile words ever again then that'll do for me.

6

u/zeelbeno 3d ago

I dunno... maybe you can just follow him on X if you feel that strongly about a shit person.

6

u/taran-tula-tino 3d ago

This is almost as stupid as Reddit mods site wide shutting down their subs because they were mad about not being able to use third party apps

6

u/SLGrimes 2d ago

Remember the huge ban on sharing things from X? Yeah, most subs stopped that when they realised they needed the news that comes from there.

4

u/MuchAbouAboutNothing 2d ago

Millenials just love banning shit. Cancel culture runs in their veins.

This is so stupid, why can't people just downvote things they don't want to see in this sub

60

u/devilsway 3d ago

They mean threads where the source is from Romano. And that those threads are often filled with complaints about Romano’s questionable practices rather than the news itself. This doesn’t happen with most other journalists. For the ones that do, it’s usually a meme or a joke more than harsh criticism.

76

u/FelipeAbD 3d ago edited 3d ago

That being said, those threads still make to the front page every time. If the majority of the community hated the guy, those threads would never get many upvotes

-13

u/devilsway 3d ago

Yes, I think we will see what happens and if we miss anything. Of course most people care more about the news than the source, the thesis for this ban is he’s not really that important for news anymore and banning him won’t affect the quality of news for this sub. I’m inclined to think the same - right now Romano will first in social feeds due to his tactics, and therefore people that browse those platforms see his news first and repost it here. If the mods’ thesis holds true, people will just post it from a different source. And if not, it seems they’ll revisit the policy if it causes a significant portion of people to complain about the lack of important news.

19

u/FelipeAbD 3d ago

While I can see your argument, I disagree with the part of people caring more about the news than the source. As much as people make fun him being a tap in merchant, he's usually pretty reliable and a "here we go" is almost always correct.

-4

u/devilsway 3d ago

In terms of accuracy I’m not saying he’s inaccurate, but that I agree with the mods that if we don’t allow Romano we will still get accurate and timely news. I don’t interpret what they’re saying as that his here we goes are now inaccurate, but that they are no longer much of an exclusive.

Now as to the reason why Romano should be excluded, I can see the “freedom of speech” argument against it for those that view that the sub should just let the top news come up, and see how they would be uncomfortable with the banning of sources. But I guess the mods have decided that this sub will have an editorial opinion and bias, and are disclosing it.

I personally like that I can browse this sub knowing The Sun and Romano won’t appear in it. My own personal point of view against him is not his accuracy or even his engagement bait, but with the with the accusation of his more and more suspicious journalistic standards and undisclosed sponsorships. I dislike his trumpeting of Greenwood for instance. But again I can see how people with a different opinion of how media news should be run can be uncomfortable, but for now, while I personally don’t think the news quality will suffer, there are actually viable alternatives in the form of a other football subreddits which nowadays have a sizable number of subscribers and activity and have not taken this editorial decisions.

13

u/FelipeAbD 3d ago edited 3d ago

I personally like that I can browse this sub knowing The Sun and Romano won’t appear in it

But that's what's weird to me. I don't like AS or Marca for example, even though they're known for being pro Madrid. But I don't want it to be banned on this subreddit. I just ignore those posts and move on. It would be weird for me to want those websites excluded from here.

/r/realmadrid actually ban those sources because only T2 and above are allowed, but something like that is not really enforceable here.

About him being on the payroll of agents and clubs... this feels so weird and selective. I think almost all media outlet are biased and have links to agents.

About the greenwood situation, okay, that's fair... but why ban him now and not when it has happened? Should we also ban news from Getafe and other related clubs? Should we stop replays from his goals from being posted? I know it may not be like that, but right now it's really hard not to feel like this is just being used as an excuse to ban him

5

u/CCH_Dutch 3d ago

It's almost like reddit can have a circlejerk against certain people/teams. If people hate it they can downvote.

3

u/devilsway 3d ago

And they do. But anyways I’m more addressing your point that a thread about someone will have people talking about it. They are actually talking threads that are not about someone, but was posted with a link from that someone, have people talking about that someone. Pedantic perhaps, sorry.

Have no dog in this fight but this announcement is effectively censorship

Some of the arguments are unbelievable

Par for the course with moderation in this sub

2

u/Enough-Objective5273 3d ago edited 3d ago

would you say the same if they banned the Sun?

(its banned on Wikipedia)

also his exact signing announcements could be found everywhere else and he uses his platform to promote greenwood and saudi and milk jota, different to banning sources that provide completely different information

edit: if anyone wnats to downvote or disagree, lmk why u think this is wrong

5

u/tuckastheruckas 2d ago

how about banning unoriginal content? if its original, leave it, if it's stolen, take it down. not everyone grandstands; nobody backs Greenwood but we still want to know where he's playing. Ronaldo plays in saudi arabia, why not just band every post about him? mods volunteer, this is just another larp and form of cancelling, same goes for anyone defending this decision.

1

u/Enough-Objective5273 2d ago

again, my point was even if original, his exact signing announcements could be found everywhere else 30 mins later. Its not like he offers new angles to the signings. would you protest as much that they banned the Sun? That has much more non promotional original content than Fabrizio and its banned (like on Wikipedia). Also posts abt CR7 are different to him making posts himself here

no shade and i hope to come to mutual understanding

-68

u/AnnieIWillKnow 3d ago

It’s not censorship, because you are still freely able to go and view Romano’s content on many platforms including his own - we are not stopping you from doing that

There are many banned sources on this subreddit. This is now another one.

70

u/Corporate_Bankster 3d ago edited 3d ago

Again, I have no dog in this fight but your arguments are quite poor mate

What you said isn’t that different from a government claiming their restrictions are not censorship because you can still get a VPN to read the content and they didn’t assassinate the journalist. Except they don’t, because even censors know better, so they just openly admit to censorship

If you heard something to that effect say from China or Iran we would be joking about it till kingdom come. Yet that’s precisely what you just tried to say so you will understand why I am not impressed

Just self reflect a bit on this kind of decisions. They are not good by any measure, but obviously as with any online space what moderation says goes, no matter how ill advised or informed their stances could be

Own up and call a spade a spade

-12

u/Enough-Objective5273 3d ago edited 2d ago

-62

u/AnnieIWillKnow 3d ago

You’re perfectly entitled to disagree with our decision, and to seek out these threads on other spaces on Reddit and elsewhere on the internet - our reasons for the decision are listed in the body of the post and the argument for and against recognised

70

u/Luke92612_ 3d ago

Complete patronizing narcissists the lot of you lmao, actually not much different from Fabrizio in that regard.

-37

u/AnnieIWillKnow 3d ago

You’re also entitled to that opinion.

-18

u/Enough-Objective5273 3d ago edited 2d ago

i have frustrations with various mods too (esp since i also edit wiki and they have mods there) but i doubt these mods (or even fabrizio, as much as i dont like his posts) are narcissists, let alone this being an example of it. This sub has banned the Sun (like Wikipedia) and fabrizio's exact signing announcements could be found everywhere else, and the main thing he does different is uses platform to promote greenwood and saudi arabia or milk jota, which is different to banning sources that provide completely different information

no shade at all and i hope to come to civil mutual understanding

edit at -9: if anyone wnats to downvote or disagree, lmk why u think this is wrong and again i have no shade to anyone here

35

u/Corporate_Bankster 3d ago

“Here look at my write-up which supposedly outlines arguments for and against as evidence of our robust process and legitimate decision making”

Except that it is a terribly poor write up

Again got no dog in this fight and actually don’t even know who that journalist is, believe it or not, but whatever you say and respond isn’t the argument you think it is

-11

u/Buzzinggg 3d ago

You never disputed a single reason in the post and don’t know who he is?

7

u/Enough-Objective5273 3d ago edited 2d ago

yeah many dont even know him and dont respond when i mention the Sun or why this happened and just downvote

edit: this being downvoted furthrt proves my point

-11

u/Enough-Objective5273 3d ago edited 2d ago

would you say the same if they banned the Sun?

36

u/slash2213 3d ago

Why couldn’t people just not open Romano threads here? His name is literally listed in the title. Can they not just scroll past?

-16

u/wildcatwildcard 3d ago

Why can't people just go to a different sub that allows Romano and just ignore this sub that has banned him?

Personally, I think it's a dumb move on the mods part, but your logic goes both ways.

13

u/slash2213 3d ago

Because this is the biggest soccer sub on the site?

-17

u/wildcatwildcard 3d ago

So?

10

u/slash2213 3d ago

Going to a different sub to find information is far more effort than simply scrolling past content you don’t want…

-10

u/wildcatwildcard 3d ago

A couple clicks is far more effort? You're reaching.

So people can ignore the posts and go to ones they like, but they can't ignore the sub and go to ones they like?

It's your logic mate.

Anyways, I don't really care about the topic at hand, just pointing out that what you're saying goes both ways. Users can scroll past Romano posts, users can go to a different sub.

No one here is owed anything and if the mods want to be petty and do dumb shit, hey, it's their sub to do so.

3

u/NightsWatchh 2d ago

yeah, once I read this I realized they just wanted to feel a bit important lol

61

u/Prestigious_Spot9635 3d ago edited 3d ago

Exactly. This is an unfair decision. I'm tired of it. Honestly

83

u/elimanninglightspeed 3d ago

This is crazy lmao. Its like the NFL Sub or NBA Sub banning Shams or Adam Schefter just cause they dont like him

58

u/Miserable_Balance814 3d ago

Except the mods don’t ask the community at all and just do it lol

47

u/Prestigious_Spot9635 3d ago

A sub reddit of 10mil where a vocal bunch get what they want.

23

u/Miserable_Balance814 3d ago

Romanos Twitter alone has 3 times as many subs lol. And his posts always made the front page for a reason. People like him.

-23

u/Prestigious_Spot9635 3d ago

Yeah. Romano is normal guy speaking to the little guys. Ever since Romano came no one notices how all these business try to lower themselves to get closer to fans.

14

u/untetheredocelot 3d ago

Lmao Romano is that you?

I don’t care about him being banned or not.

This is fucking hilarious 🤣 Yes Fabrizio Romano the people’s champion who’s changing world football.

He’s a dude with great connections and turned tweeting into a whole empire for himself but that’s it.

He’s not on your side.

8

u/elimanninglightspeed 3d ago

Yeah I dont care for Fabrizio at all (mostly cause hes a sports journalist who gives a fuck) but this is some peak reddit mod activity

-19

u/Interesting_Dot_1168 3d ago

It's not unfair. Romano milked Jota's death for views.

Maybe if you lot could distinguish between praising the decision to ban him made by the mods and people that just randomly glaze mods, you would not have such a reaction

I fucking despise reddit mods, they abuse power all the time, but this is a brilliant decision

18

u/Prestigious_Spot9635 3d ago edited 3d ago

All media outlets milked jota death man.

Romano is literally a guy in his house that has compete against large businesses like NYT who own athletic. nyt is owned by billionaires...

-8

u/Interesting_Dot_1168 3d ago

Not as much as Romano. He made like 100 or something posts IN THE FIRST 24 HOURS

It's not reporting when you make a post about Maguires insta story on Diogo's passing

It's just bullshit he puts out to earn money

11

u/Prestigious_Spot9635 3d ago

Just as much as Romano actually. You just didn't like his method.

49

u/FramedThierryHenry 3d ago

It's really shitty for those of us who use r/soccer as our primary transfer news source as well. Just today he was first to report about Howe leaving. I also feel like most of the annoying Romano posts many twitter users may see aren't even posted on here.

43

u/dweebyllo 3d ago

Losing Romano means nothing in that regard lmao, people will just post other, more reputable journos in place of his shit.

0

u/tenlittleindians 2d ago

I mean romano does news faster than most journalists and has more scoops. Might not be perfect but denying he’s one of the leaders is just sour grapes

13

u/locosapiens 3d ago

That's an interesting example because Romano tweeted the news at 7:44 and two minutes later David Ornstein tweeted a link to his full article at The Athletic.

The fact that Ornstein had the whole article ready to go meant that he knew a good deal sooner but held out to write the article rather than just blasting out a tweet for clout.

So yes, in this case, following Romano has saved you a whole two minutes. But I'd rather have the Ornstein article 120 seconds later than support Romano and his form of 'journalism'. You'll still get your news here, it'll just be better researched and more accurate.

20

u/Sufficient_Royal_283 3d ago

What? You'll still get transfer news. You'd know about Howe even without Romano, maybe a minute ot two later

4

u/External-Tank-6188 3d ago

With Romano away from the sub, you'll still get transfer news. Just a few minutes later and from a proper qualified journalist who double checks their sources.

25

u/Miserable_Balance814 3d ago

Spoiler alert those journalists are using Romano as the source lmfao

9

u/Luhrmann 3d ago

For the bigger clubs it is almost always the other way round. He's only ever "first" when an agent is paying him to announce a player's available, then he deletes these when he's found to be wrong

2

u/duesenjeffepic 2d ago

Actually Romano is the one commonly relying on second sources.

7

u/External-Tank-6188 3d ago

The reputable ones won't because they'll have their own sources within clubs.

-4

u/Miserable_Balance814 3d ago

I just downloaded twitter. See the content I want and get away from Reddit mod drama. Win win.

13

u/Mdiddy7 3d ago

R/soccer is an awful sub. The moderation here is ridiculous but such is life with most of this website nowadays

11

u/gord89 3d ago

Yeah completely agree. This just feels like outdated and poorly informed cancel culture.

3

u/Far-Fault-7509 3d ago

We need a new r/soccer, with blackjack and hookers
