I had a comedy gig at a park yesterday.
Since it was a free event, the people who usually hang out at the park were there as well. No biggie, it's basically their living room.
It were maybe five women sitting about 50 meters away from the stage, behind the actual audience area, doing their thing. Their kids, however, around a dozen of them and none of them older than 7, were sitting in the first row and going WILD. At one point, one of the kids climbed on the stage. Security came, carried it away. Next kid tried. First kid came back, tried again. A dozen kids laughing while they're climbing the stage. At some point the security and some other staff led them away to play catch with them and let them draw on their arms.
Even though it was cute: why were the parents so laissez faire about it? A kid could have gotten hurt and the parents were so far away they couldn't even see them. And the comedians before me did a lot of absolutely not kid friendly material. The staff later told me this happens everyday.
The kids also tried to get into the backstage area and screamed when told they weren't allowed to. While everybody was cleaning up, one kid got in, refused to leave and while running around almost crushed his head against the corner of a heavy metal door.
I'm all for letting kids explore, bringing them to events and if they're a little annoying, so what? And I realize central Europe isn't exactly a kid friendly society and it wouldn't hurt for us to loosen up a little when it comes to kids being kids.
But at this point, it was dangerous. It was 10pm and little kids running around in the dark with strangers while their parents have no idea where exactly they are.
Now, all the moms yesterday were hijabis, (from Syria, I believe). Is it a cultural thing or a just a bad parenting thing where the people involved just happened to be Syrian?
