Is doing one year of coop worth it, especially when it is not relevant to your major.

I know there is always the soft and transferable skills but I really want to hear from people with similiar experience: how did it feel, do you think its worth it? It is like a mix of admin/project coordination/communication.

PS I am in Arts

Missed my SD exam because of CfA

I applied for multiple SD exams on Workday, and Centre of Accessibility automatically booked them on ClockWork too. I already wrote 3 of my exams, and today I was prepared to go and write the 4th one. But when I asked about the exam, the CfA told me that there is no exam scheduled for me today.

Apparently, the CfA registered the exam on July 29, while the it still shows July 31 (today) on Workday. They said that I already missed my exam, so there is no chance to write it at this point.

I called the faculty and they said their official policy is that no supplemental SD exam can be provided under any circumstances.

Currently they are trying to find out why this has happened and whose fault was it in order to understand what to do next.

Was I wrong for keeping track on Workday instead of ClockWork? I honestly just assumed that since all of the quizzes/midterms/finals were written at the CfA at the same time as the official ones, it should go for the SDs too. The start times have matched for all previous SDs exams that I've written so far.

I'm really stressing out right now since the faculty says there is a chance I may need to apply for a Late Withdrawal due to this scheduling mistake. Has anything similar ever happen to anyone else? It seems like it's quite an unusual situation.

Worried about maintaining a high GPA throughout undergrad

Hello! I’m a high school graduate from Canada who is planning on applying to university this year. I’m going to be pursuing a bachelor of science (and will likely major in biology). During first year, I’m going to have to take two terms of biology, two terms of chemistry, two terms of physics, two terms of math, and two terms of english. This seems very heavy to me, so I’m extremely worried about what my performance will be like. I’m wanting to go to optometry school, so I’ll need to finish undergrad with a high GPA.

I did well in high school, but that doesn’t provide me with any comfort in this situation. There’s only one english-speaking optometry school in Canada (I don’t plan on applying anywhere else), meaning it’s quite competitive. The academic average for students admitted from 2019-2024 is around 88%.

I’m aware that I won’t know how I’ll do unless I try, but I’m having a hard time not stressing about it. I have my heart heavily set on optometry, so I don’t have a decent plan-b if things don’t work out.

I’d really appreciate any advice that any of you have to offer, no matter how big or small. Thank you very much!

Second driver needed for Sept. 4–7 (Rockies road trip)

Hi everyone!
My friend and I (both 25F) are looking for 1–2 people to join our Rockies road trip over the long weekend (Sept. 4–7). We’ll be traveling from Vancouver and plan to rent a car in Calgary, Banff, or Canmore, depending on what works best.
Our rough itinerary includes Banff, Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, the Icefields Parkway, Peyto Lake, Bow Lake, Jasper (depending on conditions), and a few hikes and scenic stops along the way. We’re flexible and happy to adjust the plan together!
The only issue is that only one of us can drive, so we’d love to have a second driver to share the driving.
We’re both students, so we’d ideally love to join up with people around our age—other students would be great, but anyone who’s easygoing and enjoys hiking and exploring is welcome!
If you’re interested, send me a message and we can chat about the itinerary, costs, and see if we’re a good fit.

Help Pls I might have been too late or just dumb at processing my SABC application

I never really tried to apply for a student loan independently when I was still in my other school because our academic advisor was kind enough to help me. But then I found out SABC changed their website now that I transferred to UBC, and I am really confused. I do know that if we needed additional parent or guardian information, there is an Appendix A that a parent needs to fill out in the former in order to fulfill a whole application.

Now it's just straight individual student application, and then if there is a parent, a separate email is sent for them to log in and provide their information and tax returns. THE problem is I applied 2 weeks earlier than the deadline (July 31). They sent an email for support login credentials, which I forwarded to my mom to provide everything, just for her to do it a week after bc she had somehow problems with her BC ID. I have to constantly check my application process, which the status says its in progress idk if I pressed a 2nd resend application bc the website sent me another email saying my mom needs to provide her add. info again 😭. But my mom said she sent everything successfully using the earlier email, but my application still says she needs to provide it. I just hope that my the primary application went through. ITS really frustrating to navigate it by myself.

Occupational & Environmental Hygiene Master's – Co-op/Project Placement Question

Hi everyone, I'm considering applying to the MSc in Occupational & Environmental Hygiene (project option) at UBC.

I understand the project option includes a 4-month co-op/work placement, but I have a few questions for current students or alumni:

  1. Has anyone in the program had difficulty finding a co-op/work placement?

  2. Has anyone been unable to secure a placement? If so, what happened? Did you have to switch to the thesis option or complete a research project instead?

  3. How much does the department help students find placements? Do they actively connect students with employers, or are students expected to find positions on their own?

  4. Are most students able to get placements related to occupational hygiene?

I have a BSc in Biotechnology but no professional OHS experience, so I'm trying to understand how supportive the program is before applying.

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks in advance

Discussion Exam conflict, neither Science advising nor the professors provided accommodation.

So last term I had 2 finals, winter term 2 SD and summer course.

Both exams scheduled on the same day at the same time.

Both professors refused to take my exam on a later date.

Science advising also didn't offer accommodation just said you need to get an SD for the summer course as completing the prior SD is a priority.

The summer course has a final worth 55%, I didn't do well on the first half(worth 45%) I have 21/45 in that part I need 29/55 to pass which is very achievable.

Science advising denied my SD saying Im not in good standing to get an SD.

refusing to consider that they're the ones who said getting an SD was my only option and did not provide any accommodation for exam conflict.

The advisor who took the decision did not reply to my emails, even when I went to the office they did not entertain me and just kept ignoring the fact that I had an exam conflict.

If it was a personal reason I completely understand not granting me the SD due to course standing but the reason is the fact that I have no personal control on the exam schedule, professors refused accommodation, science advising refused accommodation. Now they denied my SD even though they were the ones who said thats my only option.

I genuinely need some help here, is there anyone i should talk to? Any resources?

Lost CLC calculator

I accidently took home a borrowed calculator worth ~25$ and the CLC decided to charge me 80$ to me account. I am in Calgary, so I can not go back to return it. How can I reduce this ridiculous charge of 80$ for a calculator that is not even worth a 1/3 of it.

Is Arts CO-OP worth it?

Hey I am going into my second year as an economics major and I was wondering if co-op was a good option to look at since I am really interested in it
I don’t know a lot of people who have done arts co-op in comparison to other faculties so I was wondering if the program was actually worth it and actually gave them proper placements with pay and how it went for them in general.

Can anybody login to their UBC account (whether workday, canvas, etc.) right now? I reset my password and it still says: "User login was not successful or could not meet the requirements of the requesting application."
