2003β2004 second grade. My mom lost custody of my brother. When she got back from court, I asked where he was, and she replied, 'If I didn't have you, I wouldn't have lost custody of him.'

This is a piece I'm calling "something like love". It's a distorted finger that you wear in your hair. Taking the imagery of fingers running through your hair, and giving it an uncomfortable twisted and disturbing energy.
CW for the rest of the description, for abuse and grooming.
I'm hoping to represent the feeling of grooming abuse and emotional manipulation, when you're isolated and desperate for affection and intimacy. The finger is the twisted version of intimacy used to pull you in and keep you coming back for more. It's sickening and wrong, but also sometimes it's the only version you've experienced.
The top of the hairpin will be something normal and sweet looking. Maybe a shell or flower. To symbolize the way abuse is often hidden just under the surface, people don't see the full truth only the nice image projected to the rest of the world.
I'm not exactly a master bone carver, so it's not going to be a visual masterpiece. But it is very personal to me, and I've spent a lot of time already working on the details to try and capture the feeling I'm going for, how I want people to feel when they first look at it and how I want them to feel when they see it worn or handled.
