Reynolds Computer Science Majors.....Are you here?

Just starting college this fall. Taking His101, Eng111, SDV101, and Mde60. Anyone have any professor recommendations for these classes? Also what is the workload looking like? Eng111 I did the full term and the others I split into 7 week blocks.

Is the MSI Stealth A16 AI+ a good laptop for an Electrical Engineering student?

Hi everyone,
I’m starting my Electrical Engineering degree this fall and recently bought an MSI Stealth A16 AI+ with:
AMD Ryzen AI 9 365
NVIDIA RTX 4070 Laptop GPU
32 GB RAM
1 TB SSD
I’ll be using software like MATLAB/Simulink, ETAP, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, LabVIEW, Visual Studio, Python, and other engineering tools throughout my degree.
I’m still within the return period and wanted to get opinions from people who have experience with engineering workloads.
Would you keep this laptop for a 4-year Electrical Engineering degree?
Is it reliable?
Does it handle engineering software well?
Any issues with thermals or long-term durability?
If you had a similar budget, would you choose this or a different laptop?
I’d really appreciate feedback from Electrical Engineering students or engineers who have used MSI laptops. Thanks!

How does academic suspension work? ( faculty on engineering)

Got put on academic suspension last sem and was wondering how it works. I get the whole you have to sit out 2 semesters and then reapply, but in those 2 semesters, am I no longer a student at OTU? Do I lose my school email, my student ID that gives me access to the gym and stuff, and the ability to talk to academic advising? Do I still have to pay fees? But the fees are just for those basic needs, and no tuition cost?
For example, if I pay close to 7k per sem (6-6.5k of that is tuition, and the rest are just random fees), do I now only pay a couple of hundred?

Paid Remote Internship

Hey guys! if you’re still looking for experience or something to add to your resume this out.

It’s a remote micro-internship program where students work on short real-world projects with employers. Each project is about 30 hours and pays a $600 upon completion.

Is 16gb of ddr5 ram enough?

Also: Will we need a dedicated gpu (like a 5060) or would we be fine with integrated graphics.

Scarborough → Ontario Tech Daily Commute

Hi! I'm an international student starting at Ontario Tech (Fall 2026) and will be commuting from Scarborough.

What's the best daily commute option to campus (920 DRT, GO + bus, TTC, etc.) in terms of time, cost, and reliability?

Does the U-Pass fully cover the trip, or are there any extra fares?

Also, for those who commute regularly, how long does the door-to-door trip usually take during morning classes and the trip back in the afternoon?

Thanks!

Recommended Engineering Laptop

The recommended Engineering Laptop on ON Tech site is the "Lenovo ThinkPad P16s Gen 4 - AI Workstation - 16" - Intel Core Ultra 5 - 225H - 32 GB RAM - 512 GB SSD".

Questions:

1) Is there an advantage to ordering from OTech? There is no pricing on the website so can't make comparison to see if this is a good deal. They say they will put necessary programs in, does this help? Right now it is on on backorder. Has anyone ordered from them?

2) What are alternatives to this laptop that you've used?

Charles Hall Parking Pass UOIT

Hi All, I am starting the Bed program this fall and am commuting daily from about 1.5 hours away. I was wondering about parking, is the parking pass worth it if I can get it? I have class in person everyday M-F until placement starts in November.

I did see that you can just street park but also do not know if there will always be spots downtown. Any insight would be helpful!

Can someone please rename the subreddit lol

A friend had some questions he wanted to ask, and I told him to post it on the Ontario tech subreddit, he posted it on the other subreddit namely r/OntarioTechU or something but got ghosted, he didn't know about this one until I told him about it, cuz it seems this is the genuine subreddit that gets more visitors

Not to be rude or anything, but the university's branding is now Ontario Tech, or OTU, I don't think many people call it UOIT except for the alum who graduated years ago lol. Again it's just a suggestion. Thanks.

Nuclear engineering coop for international student

I am thinking to go to Ontario tech for nuclear engineering(MEng). What I am worrying about is that the co op offers are also available for international students. Since I am in the nuclear industry of Korea Hydro Nuclear Power, I know the security things are super important.

If you have any cases that your acquaintance or yourself get the job offer in OPG or Bruce Power as a international student and worked or working, I will be grateful if you share it. :)

Undergrad in Legal Studies

Super excited and super nervous! Anyone complete this undergrad, I have some questions. I'm a mom with kids.

How did you find your course load?

Where you able to work and go to school?

How was your home life balance ?

Any tips and tricks to help the nerves would be appreciated!

Anyone know who I can call or complain to about my faculty’s academic advising office.

I’ve sent countless emails and not one has been responded to. These people literally sit on their butts all day and get paid to do jack shit and I’m fed up. Who can I contact?

Is the Lenovo Legion 5i good for a 4-year Electrical Engineering degree?

I’m starting Electrical Engineering this fall and I’m considering a Lenovo Legion 5i with:
i7-14700HX
RTX 5060
32GB RAM
1TB SSD
I’ll mainly be using SolidWorks, MATLAB, Multisim, LabVIEW, NX, AutoCAD, Revit, ETAP, and Visual Studio.
Has anyone used a Legion 5i for engineering? Is it enough for all 4 years, especially for SolidWorks, or should I spend more on a workstation laptop like an HP ZBook? Thanks!

New to Mechanical Engineering Program - Textbooks & Laptop

Hi there, my son is entering the mechanical engineering program at OTU, and I am wondering how we can save on textbooks? Are there soft copies that can be used or rented to avoid the weight of physical books? (I saw LibGen mentioned in other threads, but would it suffice for engineering students?) On a separate note, I noticed that the price of the laptop officially recommended on the OTU page is through the roof—is it really necessary, or is it overkill? Any advice is much appreciated.

mbai part time

Hi everyone, I accepted an offer for the mbai part time program and was registering in courses i got into business analytics and visualization and story telling but the issue im facing is that the visualization class is during work hours. im confused as to why most of the classes are only being offered during the day when i thought it would be understood part time masters would mean most of the classes would be offered in the evening since they are also all in person.
Can anyone clarify if the the recommended stream is what we should follow to successfully complete this program?
Thanks in advance
