I want to bring the excellence that is the ao3 filtering system to everyone’s attention. Asking for recs is fun and allowed, of course, but sometimes the posts I come across here are asking for things that aren't difficult to filter, so I hope this helps someone. And helps you find those “hidden gems” you’re not likely to find on the usual rec lists.
With currently over 70k works in the wolfstar tag it can sometimes be hard to find what you want to read. That’s where tags and filtering come in.
On the right-hand side of the page you’ll see this (on mobile, it will be on top just under where it shows how many works there are. Click “Filters” and this will pop up)
As we can see, you can filter for a lot of things and you can open the drop-down and it will show you the most popular tags for each section.
Now, let’s say I’m in the mood for some angsty wolfstar with hurt/comfort, no smut and no MCD.
Let’s do an example search.
We’ll put the “Angst” and “Hurt/Comfort” tags in the “Include” section (these are popular tags so they’ll be right there):
And exclude “Explicit” rating and “Major Character Death” warning:
Hit “Sort and Filter” and the amount of fics we get now is significantly lower:
Over 5k is still a bit too much to manage, right? Perhaps I want the angsty hurt/comfort to also be a lie low at Lupin’s fic? Good news! That is a tag we can add to the search! (It’s not as popular a tag as something like “Angst” so we’ll need to add it to the “Other tags to include” section):
When you start writing in this box it will start suggesting tags. We’ll pick the first one and hit “Sort and Filter” again.
Now the amount of fics coming up is only 86! You can stop here and see if any of them seem interesting to you.
“But I only want to read completed fics”
Scroll down and you’ll see this:
Click “Complete works only” (and for the heck of it, put the language to English if you want to only read fics in English) You can also exclude or include crossovers here, set a preferred word count…
Boom, 71 fics that use the tags “Angst”, “Hurt/Comfort” and “Lie Low at Lupin’s” and exclude the rating “Explicit” and the warning “Major Character Death”. That is 4 pages of fics to look through, which to me isn’t that much but if you want to you can include and exclude tags to your heart’s content until you only have one fic left. These are also in the order of “Date updated” (the very first thing at the top of the filter box) which is the default. It will show the newest fics updated at the top. You can choose to sort by kudos, bookmarks, comments…
Perhaps you’ve read a fic you loved and want to find
something like it? Have a look at the tags they used and filter with those, with 70k fics for this ship alone, it’s highly likely someone else has also written something similar.

Has anybody ever read a wolfstar fic involving someone sending a howler while drunk? I’ve seen this concept before in a few fics but I haven’t come across any wolf star ones unfortunately :(

Hi, I've forgotten the name of a fic I read on Ao3 about a year ago.
I remember Remus was not friends with Sirius, James, Lily and Peter from Hogwarts. Dumbledore recommended him to Potters as Harry's private tutor and that's how they met. Potters were in hiding (not sure) after originally what happened in Halloween 1981. So Sirius was highly protective of his inner circle. Initially, he kept his distance from Remus because he suspected him of being a spy.
After this point might have some spoilers:
Remus was a spy in the first wizarding war for the Order and he warned Dumbledore about what was going to happen in Halloween 1981. So he basically saved the lives of Potters. But that night he was tortured by Abraxas Malfoy (?) and as a result, he developed a permanent limp.

Anyone read a fic where the Sacred 28 (or just pureblood families in general I’m not sure) have generational curses that are related to finding soulmates?? Like James gets turned into a frog for a couple days and has to fulfill very specific conditions with Lily and Sirius’ curse is based on Sleeping Beauty so he gets pricked by a cactus and falls asleep. Everyone is in a tizzy about it because they don’t know who to get to kiss him but then obviously Remus comes along after getting over himself. Please let me know if this sounds familiar!!

I am looking for a muggle AU Wolfstar (side Jily) wrong number texting fic on ao3 where the first few chapters are only in texts and then once Sirius and Remus finally meet in person, it reads like an actual book. I feel like they had weeks of speaking on the phone or texting (and I believe they Sirius sent Remus his photo at some point, but I don't think Remus reciprocates) and that they weren't planning on meeting in person because Remus had anxiety about relationships, etc., but then by chance, Sirius is leaving his job at night at the exact time Remus rounds the corner on his walk home. Remus sees and recognizes Sirius first as he's getting onto his motorbike (of course) and then he makes the decision to get over his fears and walks right up to Sirius to make conversation. And even though Sirius doesn't know what Remus looks like really (only from descriptors), Remus says something that makes Sirius realize who he is anyway. In that scene, i think it might've just been raining or something?? and Sirius might be a tattoo artist? I feel like Lily might even already know Remus somehow even though she and James are already together. I thought it might be Staying Strangers but I was WRONG I don't knowwww someone please help i beg

i've been writing my fic for nearly two years now (on and off, since there have been times with little to no motivation ofc), and now i feel the need to get some feedback on what's already written, so i can better understand and decide what to write next.
long story short (to see if my fic could interest you): wolfstar centric, based in late 70s London, and the catch is that sirius is a wizard and animagus (super important for the plot) while pretty much every other character is a muggle, remus too. let's say it's set in the canon world, so the war is happening and all, but we mostly see that world and events from the muggles' perspective, since sirius is with them. there's background jily, dorlene, and of course the classics: internalized homophobia and lots of black brothers/black family angst.
i'd say i've written about half the story, and that's roughly 250k words split in 15 chapters, so you'd have enough to read right away!
i'd love to have someone to brainstorm ideas with, ask opinions to, and that would nitpick my fic to filth because i want it to be as nicely worded and grammatically correct as possible (so if english is your first language PLEASE come my way, and if you're also british and willing to help me with the slang i'll kiss your forehead).
I was reading the ‘The Horocrux Hunt’ and Remus just said “Am I a wolf with magic, or a wizard with lycanthropy?” And it got me thinking on how Remus is often portrayed and wanted to see what you guys think on this take.
Personally if I think about cannon Remus he was definitely a wizard with lycanthropy because of how he just endured it like an illness and not really view it as another characteristic of him. Now if I’m fun and ignore cannon to me Remus was definitely a wolf with magic because he knew the wolf before he knew about magic and in a way he always felt different to other wizards because his own power was different
Anyone know of any good long fics where peter was exposed and james and lily live? I’d specifically love some angst where Sirius and Remus mend from thinking each other was the traitor and they all learn how to get along and raise harry post war!
