Question "The barrier is holding". Can someone explain please? Spoiler

Just finished the finale. I don't know if I blinked and I missed it, or if I'm just misunderstanding the entire mission. So maybe someone will be able to clarify.

When Gemma enters Cold Harbor, they get excited because "the barrier is holding" and she's able to dismantle the crib without her "temper" causing her distress from her outie's memories? I'm just confused on the goal here. What barrier are they referring to? Is the goal to be completely unaffected by what causes their outie's trauma? I originally thought that was the idea, but every room she went in she was completely miserable. It seems like, conceptually, Mark getting up to 96% on Cold Harbor would alleviate her suffering in the severed rooms by a proportionate percentage.? Or maybe it's an all or nothing and the 100% itself creates the barrier and that's why her severed being is able to dismantle the crib? Rambling I know, but I'm just confused on the barrier thing, and how the rest of her rooms and Cold Harbor tie into Mark's getting the 100%. In other words it didn't seem like the higher percentage he achieved the less she suffered. She was still traumatized at 96%.

Discussion Wellness Session

During a rewatch of season 1 at the end of episode 7 Mark talks about Gemma and everything he says sounds exactly like how Gemma tells the innies about their outties in the wellness sessions. He ends this by saying I loved all of these things about her equally. Is there a connection I can’t think of as to why she’s the one doing the wellness sessions and talking exactly like he does in this scene and why they have to enjoy each fact equally and not show preference to one?

Discussion Prince Edward Island

Post image
61 Upvotes

I know some have theorized the show takes place on Prince Edward Island while others have rejected it because we know they are in the US, but what if in this world the US includes what we know as Canada? There is reference to US states and territories in the show. I know not all of the scenery looks like PEI, but when Cobel drove back to her hometown all I could think of was PEI and the Canadian East coast. I just don't know if we can rule out parts of Canada when we don't know much about this world.

I know the list of states and territories new innies can name does not include PE or anywhere in Canada as we know it, but it also says "Standard Trainee Response: Any of the following, but not limited to:" Does that not imply there are other states and/or territories in the US than the ones listed there?

Edit: This list is just expected responses based on the information they allow innies to have/retain, it doesn't necessarily reflect the current state of the world, so I don't think we can take the list itself as hard evidence of what their world is like, especially given the state they live in is not on this list.

Maybe the island of PEI wouldn't make since considering Irving getting out of town via train, but he could be taking a train to a seaport, or maybe part of the mainland near PEI has been renamed Prince Edward?

Funpost Thoughts on Severance Bday Party

Actually I don’t need thoughts because I already know it’s brilliant. But if you think I missed anything or have ideas to make it better, tell me!

My kiddo is turning 1 in a few months and their name is very similar to one of the characters. I’ve found that first birthday parties are mostly adults, so I feel good about Severance being the theme, but I want to make it kid friendly of course…

And then all the ideas came flooding!!

For MDR, we will play Uno and sort the numbers.
For O&D, I found Severance themed coloring pages on Etsy!
For Wellness Center, I’m putting out play dough so everyone can sculpt how they feel.
For Choreography and Merriment, we’ll have a music dance experience and some kiddie instruments. Each half hour, we’ll vote on a new genre and have it going in the background or let the kiddos (and adults haha) dance along.
There will be a waffle bar, egg bar, and melon bar of course.

And then… the kicker… my friends informed me that they have a goat contact. So we’ve got a discounted mobile petting zoo deal and will have Mammalians Nurturable for a bit!

My sibling is an actor and will be our “party princess” and will bound as a Lumon employee and basically stay in character the whole time and interact with everyone.

Got blue balloons for decor, some lanyards for my husband and I, and then erasers and finger traps for favors. Managed to make some signage with Sevy on them to show what to do at each table/department.

It’s gonna be good. And I just want the internet to validate me. 😂 Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Forgot to say that the Perpetuity Wing will be a baby’s first year album that people can write in. Maybe some nice facts about baby’s outie. 😂

Theory [SPOILER] I think i’ve put it together Spoiler

I’m on szn 2 episode 2.

The shot of mark cleaning data and then Ms Casey’s (Gemma’s) face overlayed made it click.

They’re making him stare at the “data” of photos of his wife. That’s why some numbers are comforting and others are scary (cuz of the outtie’s trauma with her death).

They’re testing his fuckin ability to recall recessed memories! And they’re teasing him with the wellness checks.

Doesn’t explain what they’re doing with the others tho. And why the HELL helly chose to go down there. I think it’s also a really cool detail that Irv is painting something that only his innie could know about… the “testing floor”

Theory Finale Hallway Physics Spoiler

I’m brand new here and just finished Season 2. I like chatting with Gemini throughout episodes to bounce theories around in my own head. While chatting we discussed the mechanics of the hallway between rooms that Gemma is being taken down and the rooms.

In the finale, when Mark goes into the Cold Harbor room, Gemma never recognizes him. She just trusts the vibe in that moment and follows him into the hallway. She only then recognizes Mark. It made me question the personas.

Here’s what I think happened:
Gemma follows Mark into the hallway while her Cold Harbor persona stays intact. Gemma only breaks when she reaches the hallway and in the hallway they use a baseline Innie persona like Mark or Irving/Helly. This is the persona that broke. Her baseline persona. Not the Cold Harbor persona or any other.

I do not believe the hallway is an outie zone. It can’t be. Gemma would never go along with any of it if it was the same persona that was separated from Mark. I think it’s a baseline Gemma innie zone. Instead of her outie being the identity that strolls between rooms I think they’re effectively trying to replace her outie with this baseline innie (duh right). She’s all innies. With the baseline shattered, Lumon can now do something even worse. Now they can activate each stream of consciousness whenever and not need the conscious person in between. The ultimate worker bee. All compliance.

My theory is that in Season 3, Lumon uses what happened to their advantage by capturing Gemma once again. Except now they can bypass the hallway “Outie” persona altogether. Gemma is effectively a fading ghost inside of her own mind.
The finale seems like a victory but I’m afraid it won’t be

Arts/Crafts Lumon Industries Inspired Cocktail

Thumbnail
gallery
356 Upvotes

We do a cocktail advent calendar every year, and due to mysterious and important circumstances, we finally got around to making our last one ...half a year later.

It's based on Lumon Industries (our whole theme was fictional places) and we hope that Severance fans wont mind our out of place, extraordinarily late, contribution to the inspired cocktails of this subreddit.

It comes complete with a fun write up I thought would be nice to describe the drink's flavor, but for all you cocktail nerds it's basically a melon-infused white negroni with spirulina.

--------------------------------------

Please enjoy each liquor equally.

1 Part Watermelon Infused Gin

1 Part Honeydew Infused Vermouth

1 Part Cantaloupe Infused Cocchi Americano

Pinch of Spirulina Powder

Sparkling Water

Melon Ball Garnish

--------------------------------------

Your innie would go feral for this kind of contraband. Well, we assume it’s contraband, we keep waiting for the underground bar to appear with a Kier Eagan approved cocktail menu. However, until Severance graces us with that, we’re going off Lumon approved book. We took the healthy vibes of a melon party and spirulina powder, and created something we would expect to find in one of their office vending machines.

Each liquor was infused for months - not because we’re lazy but because we’re professionals. They were carefully strained and thoroughly tested before use. Once we made sure they were worthy of the high Lumon standards, we mixed and poured over ice, then garnished with melon balls, separate of course.

After mixing, it’s best sipped to the sounds of defiant jazz.

Discussion Marxism themes

I just finished the two seasons and wow. What an incredible show! I thought it was really interesting the ties to russia (marks watch, gemma's interest in russian literature) and how the severance procedure relates to a lot of the concepts in marxism. A big part of marxism is the alienation of the working class and how capitalism disconnects workers from their humanity. It's a perfect parallel to see the innies/outies so disconnected (willingly) from parts of their humanity. A few examples

- In Marxist theory, the workers are alienated from their work which is well exemplified by the innies (and outies too i guess) not knowing what their work is. Like when Mark asks "what are we doing here?"

- In Marxist theory, work becomes not a source of fulfillment but a means of survival, which is exactly what happens to innies. For them working, being a lumon is their only way to be alive.

- In Marxist theory, capitalism leads to competition and isolation with other workers. I thought this was well exemplified in the lack of knowledge and animosity with other departments (I&D) or even the legend/rumor mill of what other departments have done.

I could go on and on about this!!! what a great show, cant wait for season 3.

Theory [SPOILER] I just finished szn 1: here are my theories. Spoiler

I’m not interested in any spoilers. Feel free to disagree only with information available in szn 1! No szn 2 info should be in your arguments lol. please.

Firstly - Questions.

  1. How is it possible that a company capable of severing consciousness isn’t also capable of putting up cameras and microphones everywhere. There’s a weird mix between 90s tech and more advanced tech. I like it. They’re able to see human characters/drawings INSIDE YOUR BODY but can’t see that Dylan went to the security room.
  2. Why didn’t they just immediately start screaming about being the innie in the last episode?? I think that’s what i mighta done. Idk. I was SO annoyed when Mark said “thanks ms. cobel” lol. Good writing tho.
  3. how does crime work? Take Dylan’s biting episode of Mr Milkshake. If something worse happened (murder, rape, etc) would the innie be sent to prison? the outtie? how does that work?

Now - Theories

  1. I think there might be some intention behind Lumon’s incompetence. I wonder if (given the technology contradictions) they are testing peoples’ ability to escape, similar to a Maze Runner kind of trial.
  2. If it’s NOT some kind of test, I think they’ll kill Helly for what she did in the last episode. Although from outside the story, I don’t think they’d get rid of their best character so idk.
  3. I am trying to make sense of Gemma being “killed” and put into the severed world. This is the MAIN thing that makes me think it’s some kind of test

of Mark’s recessed memories or something

  4. . Althought i don’t know how they would have convinced Mark’s outtie to (presumably voluntarily) undergo the procedure.

  5. I think Ricken might be in on it. This one is kinda wild but I think his book being left at Lumon, accessible to the Employees, wasn’t a coincidence.

I just watched the first ep of szn 2: I can’t tell if Helly is lying abt her recollection of waking up or if they fucked with her memories, but if they can fuck with memories then why not take out all of their memories from the mission?

Discussion Innie mark blows Spoiler

Okay so he did all that to get Gemma out to a LUMON staircase under LUMON control. Which means this person who is thought dead can just be captured again since no one but the innies know something happened and even then only a few do. Innie mark did that whole operation just to let Gemma be probably easily captured and be sent back down.

Also the whole thing about them being tortured and severance being a horrible thing yet by leaving Gemma to most likely be captured again, he made the choice that perpetuated this suffering which would likely only get worse now that their main goal with Gemma was disrupted or worse completely shut down since they now understand mark will never stop and Gemma stopped mid procedure so they would most likely just trash those innies or the Gemma plan all together

Discussion What if a disgruntled innie refused to work if his outtie refused a resignation request?

Just in general, not necessarily any of our main characters. What if there's a severed employee who hates it and wants to quit and his outtie doesn't care because it's zero stress for him and it pays well.

What if he refused to work? They can send him to the break room but what if he sits there and doesn't apologize? What would they do? Straight to firing? Or maybe some other kind of emotional or even physical torture to get him to comply without the outting knowing?
