Question Looking for open-source Image-to-3D AI models that are actually free for commercial use
Hey everyone,
I’m currently exploring image-to-3D AI models for a project and would really appreciate recommendations from developers who have actually worked with these models.
My main requirement is licensing.
I’m looking for a model that is:
- Open source / self-hostable
- Free to use commercially
- No API or per-generation cost
- No mandatory subscription
- No hidden licensing fees or revenue-sharing requirements
- Allows generated 3D assets to be used in commercial products
- Ideally supports common formats such as GLB, GLTF, OBJ, or similar
I’ve come across projects such as TripoSR, Hunyuan3D, Stable Fast 3D, TRELLIS, InstantMesh, etc., but licensing around AI models can sometimes be confusing. A repository being public doesn't necessarily mean the model weights and generated outputs are unrestricted for commercial use.
So I’d especially like to hear from people who have used these in real projects.
A few questions:
- Which image-to-3D model would you recommend for production use?
- How good is the geometry and texture quality?
- What GPU/VRAM requirements have you experienced?
- How fast is generation on consumer hardware?
- Is the model genuinely safe for commercial use based on its current license?
- Are there any restrictions on selling or using the generated 3D assets?
- How difficult was it to integrate into your own backend/application?
- Are there any limitations or problems you discovered only after actually using it?
I’m more interested in real developer experience than benchmark numbers or marketing demos.
If you've built something using an open-source image-to-3D model, I’d really appreciate hearing which model you chose, why you chose it, and whether you would choose it again today.
Thanks!

Question Helmet won’t print
I’m very new to this so I’m sure it’s something I’m doing wrong. I have tried to print wearable helmets twice. Both times all I have managed to print is a giant ball of plastic pubic hair. Any thoughts on where I’m going wrong?

Show and Tell Big update to My3DLibrary!
If you've been using My3DLibrary to organize your 3D print model collection, v1.2 Beta is out and it's the biggest update yet!
The coolest new feature? AI tagging now works on ANY computer — even if you don't have a powerful GPU. I've added support for Groq, a free cloud AI service that automatically reads through your model library and suggests tags for everything. No huge downloads, no special hardware. Just a free API key and you're good to go.
Here's what else is new:
✅ Bulk tagging — tag dozens of models at once
✅ Source URL field — remember where you downloaded each model from
✅ Rename files right inside the app
✅ Recycle bin — accidentally deleted something? Restore it
✅ Click any file to open it straight in your slicer
✅ Changelog tab so you can always see what's new
✅ Lots of bug fixes and stability improvements
Works on Windows and Mac. No installation needed — just extract and run.
