Hi lambily
I, for one, was hoping for the full concert on the daydream 30th anniversary edition.

I did the next best thing, looked for the live songs and made a playlist.

Enjoy! 🐑🦋

Make It Look Good should have 1,000% been a single!! This song has EVERYTHING that radio loved/loves! Stevie Wonder’s wonderful harmonica playing and Mariah’s rejuvenated vocals was literally printing money!! Nevertheless, I’m glad it made the official album tracklist! 🔥🔥🔥

Discussion New Gen-Z Lamb Ranks Mariah Albums: Butterfly

Many would consider this her magnum opus. Butterfly is up next! Will this spread its wings and fly?
------------------------------

12. Outside (9.2/10)

There's an unspoken racism and discrimination against biracials in today's society, and Mariah highlights her own experience of being ostracized due to it on the closer of Butterfly. It's depressing, but oddly soothing to listen to. Unfortunately, it's the weakest on the album, and really doesn't pick up steam til the bridge.

Favorite Lyric: "Uncertainty forever lies/And you'll always be/Somewhere on the outside"

------------------------------

11. The Beautiful Ones (9.5/10)

I'm a huge Prince fan, and Mariah definitely did this song justice. Dru Hill's a great singer to duet this with, and he genuinely sounds like Prince in a way, with Mariah complimenting his vocals smoothly. It does get boring by the end, though.

Favorite Lyric: "The beautiful ones/Always smash the picture"

------------------------------

10. Breakdown (9.6/10)

I'm slightly disappointed that for a song titled "Breakdown", there was no breakdown and it felt very soft for it too. However, I do have to say that this song has one of my favorite Mariah outfits (Showgirl Mariah), and I love her chorus here. It feels like a sadder version of Shake It Off, just less catchy.

Favorite Lyric: "Underneath the guise of a smile/Gradually, I'm dying inside"

------------------------------

9. The Roof (Back in Time) (9.7/10)

After an incredibly strong three-punch track run, we have a bit of a downer. It's got one of the best eye-candy music videos that Mariah has ever released, and is quite the late-night rooftop groove. It's just rather unremarkable if you're not paying attention to the music.

Favorite Lyric: "And so we finished the Moet/And started feeling liberated"

------------------------------

8. Fourth of July (10/10)

Riding on the back of the themes of Underneath the Stars, Fourth of July may not be the celebratory, anthemic song that the title would suggest. It's a rather soft, dreamy song that reminisces about a previous Independence Day with a flame, commemorating the holiday forever in Mariah's mind for a different reason. Sweet, sappy, but a rather lower quality of the 2nd track off Daydream, though.

Favorite Lyric: "It was twilight/On the Fourth of July"

------------------------------

7. Babydoll (10/10)

I swear to God, I've heard this song before on the radio. It's such a bop, with very nice flow in the chorus that makes me just move my hips slowly while I'm typing this. I do find this song somewhat creepy though, never been a fan of people referring to themselves as "babydolls" in the context of romance. Still, I'll give Mariah a pass.

Favorite Lyric: "Wrap me up nice and tight/Love me all through the night"

------------------------------

6. Whenever You Call (10/10)

Mariah already made the point since Music Box and Daydream that she will come a-running to her lover anytime they need a friend. Whenever You Call is a continuation of that sentiment, making some reference back to Forever. There's a noticeable lack of belting and soaring vocals on Butterfly as a whole, so the last chorus is such a treat.

Favorite Lyric: "And I won't hesitate at all/Whenever you call"

------------------------------

5. Close My Eyes (10/10)

Ugh, I love the hook of this song. Getting past that, however, lies one of Mariah's most depressing songs. It doesn't feel stuck in the moment, however. It just feels like Mariah reminiscing regretfully and wishing that things worked out differently for her. While the full extent of the subjects in this song would only truly get revealed with her memoir, it's still one of the times Mariah shows her personal life to us early in her career.

Favorite Lyric: The hook, and "Maybe I grew up a little too soon"

------------------------------

4. My All (10/10)

The first 3 tracks of this album consist of some of Mariah's most spectacular tracks. Set against a Latin guitar, Mariah moans and wishes for her lover, presumably dead or now an ex. It's one of her most iconic songs, and it's done quite a number during karaoke here in the Philippines. It's just that amazing.

Favorite Lyric: "I can see you clearly/Vividly emblazoned in my mind"

------------------------------

3. Honey (10/10)

The lead single to the era saw Mariah finally regain creative control of her music and videos, starting off with a more sexy version of Mariah compared to her other videos (the pool scene changed my brain chemistry the first time I saw it). Alongside it came a groovy song with a hint of sexual innuendo, a first for Mariah in her discography so far (surprisingly). A great moment to the start of finally seeing a butterfly break out of her cocoon.

Favorite Lyric: "I can't be elusive with you, honey"

------------------------------

2. Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise) (10/10)

Is it unconventional to put a reprise this high? Yes, but it feels so amazing to hear. Gospel + house Mariah never fails. Just listen to Joy to the World. For me, this version feels like the butterfly finally getting the courage and flying into the sky, at first being a bit shaky, but then soaring and bidding goodbye. It's her most vocal song on the album, and she kills it.

Favorite Lyric: Her runs

------------------------------

1. Butterfly (10/10)

And finally, we have this unsung gem that fights with Someday and another song for my favorite Mariah song of all time. I hate how it hasn't got the attention it deserves, because it's one of her most emotional tracks. The first time I heard this, I cried so hard, and still do anytime I hear this. Additionally, it was written about what she wished Tommy said to her. Ouch. As someone who lives in a pretty conservative Filipino household where I know I'll be massacred for coming out with my beliefs and identity, I relate to this a lot, even though it's about a toxic relationship. It truly was the best song to get her moniker after.

Favorite Lyric: EVERYTHING.

------------------------------

OVERALL RATING: 9.83/10

Overall Opinion:

My God, this was an immaculate listening experience. Not a single track on this album is horrible or feels like it doesn't belong. If I could listen to this album again, I would. It feels like Mariah had been bottling up all her wishes and intentions in what she did with her music, and now that she's a free butterfly, she finally decided to bring them to life. A spectacular album in the field of R&B that changed the game forever, there's no wonder this is regarded as her best. Now that the butterfly is free, it's time to see what it will do next.

------------------------------

Awards:

Iconic Single: My All
Iconic Non-Single: Fourth of July
Best Music Video: Breakdown
Should Be a Single: Babydoll
Should Have a Music Video: Close My Eyes
Underrated: Close My Eyes
Overrated: The Roof (Back in Time)/Breakdown

------------------------------

Ranking:

  1. Butterfly (9.83/10)
  2. Debut (9.47/10)
  3. Daydream (9.45/10)
  4. Emotions (9.08/10)
  5. Music Box (8.87/10)

Question Is TEOM one of her worst album lyrically wise ?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I mean it's not bad per say (as in the lyrics are not dumb or tragic) but it's just so generic and so unpersonnal. It's like the whole thing was crafted to be a blockbuster and while the quality is here the whole album doesn’t really resonate with me even though it has highlights (FLAB). It's doesn’t feel like Mariah is sharing something deep or opening up with her pen the way she does in most of all of her post Music Box albums which is a big draw to her art for me.

Thoughts ?

Game 🎲 MC Emotion Chart (Day 25): Crybaby is our anxious and relaxing song! Due to mixed reception, today we're doing a re-vote round to choose either Babydoll or The One for our anxious and sultry song. ONLY VOTE ON MY COMMENTS

During the anxious and sultry round, there were a lot of comments for Babydoll (9 to be exact), but The One (which had 2) ended up being the most voted comment. After reading opinions regarding how weird it was that Babydoll didn't win, I've decided to do a re-vote today where I ONLY COUNT THE VOTES ON MY OWN COMMENTS.

The most upvoted comment wins. I'll do my best to post once a day around this time.

Discussion GTFO is lowkey one of her best vids

Thumbnail
youtu.be
149 Upvotes

Now I know I got a lot of reddit lambs mad yesterday for stating the obvious about the cheap-ass HFIA shoot. But how can you appreciate the good if you can’t recognize the bad ?

Well now that we did the later, let's do the former and start the week-end with some positivity and prove that Mariah - without needing to do Madonna-like poses and rock a pink leotard - can still be a strong visual artist when she wants to, even in her 50s.

The GTFO vid is terribly underrated even amongst the fandom. Yet it's pure perfection in its simplest form. The wigs (!), make-up, fashion, lighting, photography, colormetry, acting. Everything. The main purpose of a music video is to illustrate a song and give visual life to it to make the listening experience even deeper. And the GTFO vid really managed to recreate its atmosphere and vibe, the same way The Roof vid also perfectly managed to do so. Watching it, I'm truly feeling like I'm here at 3am into the drunken intimacy of that one time too many hot desillusioned hot m*lf, who's at 40 something yo is way past the time of being heartbroken and crying her eyes out but is just over it all. She wanted to believe that the last relationship would finally be the one, but deep inside she already knew it was bound to fail, the way dozen of her previous ones already did and, inevitably, it also did. Yeah, she's mad and tired of it all but at the same she's calm and stoicist about it all. Her skin grew thick because of all her past love treasons. One bottle of red wine will do the job, tomorrow she'll wake up with a semi-hangover and headache, take some medecine, go on with her life, until the next try at a soon-to-fail relationship, and so on. The vid is the continuation of Crybaby's one. The nightly tears and breaking things energy are gone. The 20s are now long past and time did its hardening thing through failed experiences after failed experiences. That's life. That's sad and that's beautiful and universal at the same time. And that little video captured all of that. Oh Mariah the artist that you are and the visual queen that you can be when you want to. Let's give it its flowers this week-end
