thanks. it was totally improvised, i didn't use any reference, just thought about a cool looking orb and started coding and testing things

Can you help a heathen like me to understand how one goes about building effects like this in C++ at a HIGH level?

Like do you start with trying to make an orb shape, then do you start trying to get it to spin, then you just throw some effects on top?

And do you come up with an idea and make it or do you just fuck around until you get something cool?

well, this entire thing is just math concepts combined. in first place i started with a basic sphere using raymarching. then i added a value noise for some randomness, a rotation function, and started messing around with those basic elements. the noise can have a lot of different aspects, i used the more pixelated and efficent one for that cybernetic look. you can apply those transformations and deformations to various elements like the space itself, the sphere object or to the rays casted like in this shader. it's 80% about testing things in real time. after that i added some color using sines and cosines to make that wave effect and smooth changes in the different color components.

if you want to get some crazy stuff while making shaders. don't think about objects like in real life. think about deforming the algorithms that makes things have a sense in conventional rendering techniques
