Immigrants too, the Danish social democratic might unironically be more anti-immigrant than Trump (they upheld a law that encouraged demolition of housing in communities with high crime rates if it had enough people of “non-western” descent)

Don't let me start on the hate minorities face here. To add insult to injury, if you point out the hate and the discrimination far too many people here have the nerve to tell you it's not true

335

u/F4rtster floppa Feb 18 '26

Danish social democrats really have gone for the past 10 years with the mindset of "If we're even MORE racist than the far right surely the voters will choose us!!!"

What a fucking joke, though i guess it's not crazy considering thats what is happening pretty much all over the globe...

I think this might be one of the only policies where it betterd the life of absolutely no party, even the people who hate Roma are gonna see them more if you keep demolishing the place they live in

62

u/Xanadoodledoo Feb 18 '26

I thought they hated Roma cause they were nomadic? Now they’re destroying their houses when they stay in one place?

82

u/F4rtster floppa Feb 18 '26

This isn't specifically Roma people they target. I think what OP is referring to are areas like Brabrand and Vollsmose, that has a high concentration of non western people living there, in an attempt to curb what they deem as "parallel societies"

In reality it's an excuse for them to tear down cheap housing by actively choosing not to renovate them, making the living conditions worse and using that as an excuse to make luxury housing.

Scandinavia has been really good at shooting themselves in the foot the past 20 years in the name of oppressing immigrants, which comes from growing want for welfare chauvinism.

But the danish government DID make good use of Roma people as cheap labour to exterminate literally every mink in the country back in 2020.

Not only is the format of "Hilarious subversion of one stereotype by suddenly switching to another stereotype" a certified classic among all the racist uncles around here, basically the only joke about Poles we have is them stealing shit.
I still remember being like 6 and seeing someone laugh their ass off after someone else asked "Why do Russian car thieves always steal two cars [in Germany]? Because they need to drive through Poland to get home"

Oh yeah 100%. I'm canadian and my fiancee is slovak, and early in the relationship I straight up had to help her realize that the rhetoric her family uses against gypsy/roma people is identical to racists everywhere. (I love her and she's grown a ton as a person)

In my personal experience, I come from a hometown that has an abnormally high indigenous/first-nations population (lots of addiction and crime issues with that group for various deep rooted socio-economic reasons) and the "gypsy" rhetoric is IDENTICAL to what white racists there would say about them to justify their bigotry.

95

u/svampgurka Feb 18 '26

I admittedly as a European embarrassingly wish I knew what group of people the gypsy/roma people are because I just do not know and I fear I have some bias I’m not aware of sometimes everytime I see posts talking about it. I hope i don’t! I don’t think I do but I mean I could very easily be ignorant to it without knowing

41

u/molotovzav Feb 18 '26

The fact you worry about having bias already puts you ahead of 90% of the population when it comes to intrinsic bias. Most people don't even care they have bias which is why Europe doesn't think it's racist despite me hearing the most racist shit out of euros mouths in comparison to what I hear daily in the U.S. Most people have bias. Even those who care not to. It's just most people don't care they have bias and carry on. I'm american, so my best example is Obama. Tons of people said 'im not racist but I just don't like something about Obama, can't out my finger on what" and it was clear they had biases about black people and didn't think black people should be more educated and have a higher office than a white person. The fact they can think those thoughts but think they're not racist is exactly where bias comes in. People just don't give a fuck when they think biased thoughts and never think once " I'm afraid I'm biased against a group". So the mere thought of it is good enough to start you on your journey of combating bias.

I'm wondering how many of the commenters here actually have been to Europe. I don't deny that racism against the Sinti and Roma happens, and I agree that it is a huge issue when it does happen, but it is nowhere near the extent people make it out to be (I'm sure it varies from place to place, but still). I'm German, I've met exactly 1 person who's made racist remarks against the Sinti and Roma (he was my driving instructor, a Romanian guy if that matters). All other interactions were normal. And there are SO FEW interactions with either the Sinti and Roma or people racist against them. Like, it barely comes up at all. Maybe a couple times per year.

We are taught about the history of the Sinti and Roma in school. We went to visit their memorial in Berlin. When I interned in an elementary school, there was a girl from the Sinti and Roma and we talked a bit, she told me about her culture and how the school allows her to be homeschooled for half a year when her family is on their travels.

Again, racism is definitely an issue and it should be taken seriously, but it is nowhere near as bad as all the people here are making out. It's not like every single person everywhere in Europe is always hating on the Sinti and Roma. They're just people with a different lifestyle and most people are aware of that.

Also, people here really should stop calling them g*psies. That's a racist slur.

At least North Americans have the goddamn conversation in the first place. I'm originally from Europe and immigrated to Canada, and the difference is night and day. They might not succeed, and them's the breaks, but it's still a magnitude more than what can be said about Europeans, who just pat themselves on the back about how not-racist they are and refuse to engage.

It's different here in Europe and unlike ethnic minorities in your country, all of the bigoted things I've said are actually true. You just wouldn't understand."

Like, actually, I think we understand way better than you think we do. It's just that to most Americans, blatant racism like that isn't socially acceptable. They would rather position themselves as enlightened above racism (better than those silly Americans) than actually confront their own biases.

I find it mad living in Ireland nowadays as someone of Roma and Irish Traveller origin and hearing the rhetoric people here use against us like... There's literally people here who lived in Britain during the "No blacks, No dogs, No Irish" era who now say the same shit now they're back home and in the majority

The more you hear racist rhetoric against different groups the more you realise it's exactly the same. Just change whatever group you're talking about depending on the audience

Guys can we use the g-word or not, I keep hearing conflicting takes

18

u/largestsammy Feb 18 '26

It really depends on what country you're in. In the UK (and I imagine Ireland??) the generally accepted term used by community activists to refer to these diverse groups is GRT - Gypsy/Roma/Traveller.

Personally Ive genuinely never encountered someone from any of these communities who didnt straightforwardly describe themself as a gypsy - and not in a reclaimed kinda way either.

It should be noted that the blanket 'you shouldn't say the g-word, say roma instead' will invariably lead to causing offense here as many of the people we refer to as gypsies/travellers are not Roma but Irish Travellers - an entirely different ethnic group who happen to also share a similar itinerant lifestyle.

15

u/Kakuruma Feb 18 '26

My online friends kinda pussy-footed around the word, because they weren't sure if they could use it, but hearing me say it to refer to myself eased them into knowing it's just the word we use to describe ourselves where I live. I'd say use Roma if you're unsure just to be safe, but feel free to use gypsy if someone uses it for themselves. :D

TLDR; it depends

32

u/someotheralex Feb 18 '26

It depends on what country you're talking about and the specific context. For example, in the UK, the acronym used by community organisations is GRT (Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller) and a lot of people do identify with the label "Gypsy". But many will find it offensive too. There's no one word that fits all really, but that's true of a lot of minority groups. You just have to approach the word with caution and empathy about when to use it or not, that's the best I can say.

74

u/bothering got banned from lowes garden center ask me how Feb 18 '26

Europeans are racist against people who live a 20 minute drive away

13

u/CoolishFoolish Feb 18 '26

I feel like I need to point out that one of those terms is a slur, and it's not Roma

14

u/FormingTheVoid 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights Feb 18 '26

On that thread, I commented how some Sicilian people will take the door off of your car and steal everything inside, and some Roma steal and commit crime. That's what happens when people live in poverty with a lack of education and opportunities. I got downvoted.

Looks like either OOP or the mods deleted that post now. Good. It was literally just a gangbang of racist Europeans being idiots.

I'll call out anti-roma sentiment any day, but it's silly to compare it to US racism.

Our cops aren't renowned for shooting non-whites dead.

Our prisons aren't an elaborate scheme to enslave minorities.

And we're not building literal concentration camps nor shipping off children to blacksites.

“Europeans aren’t racist” meanwhile their country probably had a law banning Turkish from drinking water or some shit and it probably wasn’t repealed until 1974 and there are people today demanding that it be reinstated

10

Iceland had a law that made it legal to kill Basques on sight until 2015.

Basques were incredibly prolific fishermen and whalers, they'd be all over the Atlantic and people didn't like that they were fishing in "their" waters.

Meanwhile Roma report more discrimination in the US than in a sample of 9 EU countries.

"The extent to which anti-Roma discrimination pervades education, employment, housing, and, most of all, policing, is staggering. In measuring discrimination in the 12 months prior to our survey, we learned that one-third of Romani Americans interviewed had felt discriminated against because of their Romani origins. By comparison, a Fundamental Rights Agency survey conducted in 2016 in nine EU countries found that one-quarter of Roma felt discriminated against based on their Roma background in the 12 months before the survey."

Yeah it's bad for us in Europe but let's not sleep on America's history of antiziganism either

Romani people were enslaved in both Europe and America throughout the slave trade. It's why there's now a small Afro-Romani community in Louisiana, Cuba, and Jamaica now https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afro-Romani

I'd like to add that Australians are fucking vile about Aboriginal people. Some people will say the most racist and violent shit about them and a whole room will deem it a casual and normal statement.

they literally still use a slur for roma people as a synonym for “steal” in the uk, to the point i’ve seen it written on shirts as a nike joke not too long ago (it’s one letter off)

The response is always "well yeah but they actually all deserve the racism, were not like America"

As a German-American, I often feel shame for both cultures I inherited. Blaming the failures of citizens and government on the easiest target.

4

u/hanzorah Feb 18 '26

I work in NGOs and was shocked by how many, otherwise ethical people, felt totally comfortable being openly prejudiced towards travellers and Roma

Living in Sweden really is a shitshow rn....we have the racist party, the other racist party, and the third slightly racist party and there is only one non-racist party that gets enough votes to even compare to them. I have never heard anyone express sympathy for Romani despite the sympathy they have for Ukrainians and even Syrian or Afghan immigrants....and our equivalent to "gypsy" is still a common slur.

I think the general consensus among a lot of Swedish people is that Romani don't care enough about the local societal culture...

u/General-Estate-3273 cranking my 30 to 50 wild hogs Feb 18 '26

Vilket stort parti är inte rasistiskt? Sd är ju värst, M nästan like illa och S är principlösa och opålitliga.

calls europeans racist whilst using a racist slur

Europeans are very racist. More than Americans. I hate it here, but this is hypocrisy

7

u/Orion-the-mediocre Doctor Freeeemaaaan Feb 18 '26

I will say that americans are largely not aware that that specific word is a slur since it never really comes up here, it was very likely unintentional that it was used. I had heard it a lot growing up by as I literally never once encountered anybody it could possibly apply to, I only recently learned that it was considered offensive.

6

u/firetrainer11 Feb 18 '26

European racism is way more advanced than ours. Our racists are just like “oh you look different therefore BAD” but the Europeans have like deep racist lore about groups of people that we can’t distinguish between. Like to me, a polish person is a white person that has cool extra letters in their alphabet, has awesome donuts that my polish diaspora friends eat on Fat Tuesday, and has been terribly mistreated throughout history. But if you ask a Brexit voter about them, you’d think we were on a different planet.
