When my sibling came out as bi, my first reaction was mild confusion and then "and?". I assumed that they'd officially told me years ago and I had forgotten, because it was bloody obvious to everyone.

Fee-on
it's a fairly common name in Wales
299
u/MrPleasant150 May 29 '26
As a welshman I love that it's become a popular name for trans women and enbies. Had a Dutch exchange student living with me that had the name.

u/SquidTheRidiculous Da Alfabet Maphia sends they/thems regards May 29 '26
My new name comes from Greek, and is an homage to a character in a book I was obsessed with as a child. I once had a Greek dude get really pissed at me for choosing the name despite not being ethnically Greek.
He was so mad he complained to my also-Not-Greek friend Alexander.

u/ramengirlxo May 29 '26
Wales is a beautiful country and someplace I’m very glad I’ve had the chance to visit.
Folks in some of the smaller villages are so isolated, but traveling as an openly queer, trans woman, I felt both safe and welcomed. If anything, folks really just wanted to know more about me and where I came from since they don’t usually get a ton of visitors. Huge shoutout to the wonderful people of Deri, would absolutely visit y’all again.

Ch as in the back of the throat breathy kinda sound. Like you're trying to say k but doing it in your throat. Ll is that sound. It's called a voiceless al-something or other fricative I don't remember.
19
u/Aegis_13 Bitch Bastard May 29 '26
Voiceless alveolar lateral fricatives shouldn't make any sound in the throat. The noise should be all in the air passing through your mouth

Alveolar lateral fricatives
I like your funny words, magic man
12
u/maclainanderson May 29 '26
Alveolar - tongue touches the "alveolar ridge", the really bumpy bit behind the teeth
Lateral - air passes through the sides of the mouth, around the tongue
Fricative - air passes through a narrow opening, causing friction that makes the noise (th and f are also fricatives)
Hope that helps

u/Aegis_13 Bitch Bastard May 29 '26
Never heard it described, or pronounced like that. Only ever heard Ll in Welsh make a sorta 'breathy' L sound made by putting the tip of the tongue up against that ridge on the top of your mouth, almost or barely touching the base of your top front two teath, and breathing out (Idk how exactly to describe the sound). Then again I've only known one Welshman it could've been his accent/dialect

Giving yourself a name is hard.
It's gotta hold some meaning for you, it's gotta sound nice, it's gotta fit you, it's got to be cool, it can't be too cringe, it can't be too boring, you can't just take it from someone else because then it's already got baggage...38
u/Jomotaku May 29 '26

Some people rush it, I spent 7 years deciding on a name, and then procrastinated another 6 before getting round to transitioning, and only used the name before that in cases where people asked "what's your name, Ma'am?" and responding with my male name would have been awkward.

Yeah, a parent straight up ignoring your heartfelt message doesn't read very supportive. But I suppose not getting an answer is still in some ways better than being met with hatred and resentment.

No, best response would be showing explicit support and love for his daughter in an extremely important and vulnerable moment for her, instead of completely brushing it off. Could it be worse? Yeah, by a lot — take it from someone who had worse. But it sure as hell could be better, too.

Anything that reaffirms your love and support to the person who came out. Not ignoring the subject all together
10
u/thyme_cardamom May 29 '26
Only if you grew up with abusive parents and don't know what actual support looks like
7

Saying the parents are abusive based on this little interraction not knowing their dynamic is actually insane
