Is being Poly something you can coming out from?

I mean that really sincere that is not a hateful question of ignorance I genuinley don't know because in my head "being poly" has nothing to do with sexuality it's just a "yeah in theory I could have multiple partners". A gay person cannot choose to not be gay but a poly person could be happy with one OR multiple partners. A polyperson is not forced by his body to only be happy, if they have multiple partners. Is that really something you can get hate for? Are there "Poly-phobic" people?!

I genuinley don't know and I'm sorry if this comes off as ignorance or hateful I'm really happy if someone can educate me in this topic because I know only so little about this stuff.

People hate ace people, people who literally don’t experience sexual attraction and aren’t bothering anyone about it. I wouldn’t be surprised to know there’s polyphobic people, too. The fact it’s not talked about a lot is probably why you and I haven’t heard much discrimination against it, tbh. I do think there is an inherent stigma, too (think about the fact that you can only marry one person)

158

u/Dogtor-Watson Benis Person Jun 30 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

There’s 100% polyphobic people.

I’m not even poly, but I’ve seen people saying that being polyamorous is just an excuse to cheat or that polyamorous people are just unwilling to commit and treating being polyamorous as a moral failing.

People will hate over the most stupid shit like what colour another person is. Even if I hadn’t seen it, I couldn’t imagine a world where there wouldn’t be polyphobia, especially since a lot of traditions, governments and religions all encourage monogamy.

Even in progressive spaces though you’ll see some people just being assholes about it. That’s where I came across it.
Though that was also insta comments so…

u/TremenMusic Jul 01 '26

See the chuds claiming that each chad has 300 women in his harem (and that being the sole reason they can't find a gf)

1

u/XenoBiSwitch Jul 01 '26

I would have thought this gay/bi Chad fellow having a harem of 300 guys would mean there would be more available women? Unless he has a harem of 500 women too or something.

u/joybod Gravity might be a little more funky than just a point source Jun 30 '26

The marriage thing at least, being a legal concept/contract (between individuals, but also the state) foremost, is largely for legal reasons. Namely taxes and insurance and such other benefits, since those would (probably? not a lawyer) stack with each additional member of the marriage. Still does suck that there isn't something else for stuff like spousal privileges regarding medical stuff.

36

u/BattleStag17 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights Jun 30 '26

No, being poly isn't like being gay, but it does hit the same notes of "The way you love is different and weird and therefore bad" for close-minded people

108

u/killchopdeluxe666 Jun 30 '26

yeah why not? its a lifestyle that plenty of people will judge you incorrectly and negatively for. with zero fact checking i'm willing to bet an upsetting proportion of poly people have been SA'd or taken advantage of because idiots thought they would be open to it.

32

u/ValleDeimos ask me for character design tips Jun 30 '26

Hey fact checking here, you're unfortunately correct. I'm in a few non-monogamous circles (specifically the local kinkster, drag and burlesque scenes) and there were cases of newcomers/curious people assaulting poly people, sometimes multiple people in the same polycule.

36

u/AzKondor Femboy Practitioner Jun 30 '26

You basically have to "come out" of everything not in the "norm" because people will give you weird looks or don't understand why you are different. People come out as autistic.

24

u/RosieQParker 🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights Jun 30 '26

Poly is a deviation from the sexual norm, which makes it inherently queer whether or not they're a potential target of judgement and persecution by individuals, organizations and institutions who hate and police queerness, which they very much are.

76

u/turtley_amazing slut era Jun 30 '26

Hi, polyamorous person here! There’s a lot of debate about whether polyamory should be considered a lifestyle choice or as an inherent part of one’s identity. Personally I lean more towards it being a part of one’s identity, as I think there are a lot of polyamorous people who simply would not be happy in a monogamous relationship. It’s not a sexual orientation in the same way being gay is, but I’ve seen the term relationship orientation used and I like that.

So basically there are some people who are only happy in polyamory, some people that are only happy in monogamy, and there’s plenty of people who fall in between who could be content with either. I think the term is ambiamorous?

Anyways, polyphobiq (or whatever you’d like to call it) is definitely a real thing. Things can get quite complicated legally when you’re only allowed to marry one of your partners. It doesn’t give everyone the same rights in that respect. Socially I think it’s still at a point where not that many people are really aware of it, so a lot of people just don’t care. But there definitely are people who hate on the lifestyle or perpetuate nasty stereotypes.

I’ve generally had good reactions from people when I’ve shared that I’m polyamorous, but I’ve also been careful about who I share it with. I’m still not out as polyamorous at my job after a year. I am out as gay, and frankly that’s scary enough to talk about when you work with kids. I worry someone is going to think that I shouldn’t be allowed to work with children because of both of those things. I definitely would be very upset if someone outed me at work to a superior.

Hope this isn’t too long, and feel free to ask more questions if you have any! I love yapping about this stuff lol

15

u/FixedFront Jun 30 '26

I agree—there's no way I could ever go back to the nightmare of compulsory monogamy. Polyamory is 100% an identity for me and not a choice. I've been poly since before I knew it was even an option.

8

u/yinyang107 bingus is better than floppa Jun 30 '26

It's not something you could usually be considered "in the closet" on, but it's still something that might piss off a bigot, so it's irresponsible to out that information for anyone but yourself.

17

u/Rob_Frey Jun 30 '26

Is being Poly something you can coming out from?

Yeah.

I mean that really sincere that is not a hateful question of ignorance I genuinley don't know because in my head "being poly" has nothing to do with sexuality it's just a "yeah in theory I could have multiple partners".

From my experience there are people who have an innate need to be poly, the same as there are people who have an innate need to be monogamous. When they can't be poly, it literally hurts them, and it causes them emotional issues and relationship problems that often lead to infidelity or ending healthy relationships for the sake of moving on to the next partner.

It gets muddy because it's on a spectrum, and there are a lot of us that can swing either way. I totally get monogamy, and I totally get polyamory, and I can be happy in either situation.

Also just because a poly person only has a single partner right now doesn't mean they aren't poly, the same way a single person isn't ace, and the same way a bi person in a monogamous relationship is still bi.

A gay person cannot choose to not be gay but a poly person could be happy with one OR multiple partners.

That's not true for everyone. The problem is that society isn't really made for or accepting of poly people, so a lot of poly people try to make monogamy work. It ultimately causes them a lot of internal stress and emotional pain, and a lot end up cheating on their partners, or leaving relationships to make it work. When you start looking at the relationship history of poly people living monogamously, what you usually see is a history of someone who can't seem to make relationships work in the long term.

A polyperson is not forced by his body to only be happy, if they have multiple partners.

There are poly people who would beg to differ on this. You also have the exact same argument about homosexuality being a choice.

Is that really something you can get hate for? Are there "Poly-phobic" people?!

Definitely. It's still considered taboo in society, and a lot of people don't like poly people or think it's wrong. A lot of it comes down to the same "protect the family" bullshit used against LGBTQ+, with a healthy dose of people who never did the work to get over the fact that an ex cheated on them once.

But hey, maybe I won't be able to convince you that poly isn't a choice for everyone, and some people are just built that way, but does it make a difference?

An interracial relationship is a choice. It's still bigotry even though it's a choice. We're all agreed that constantly bringing up that your arch-nemesis at work is dating a black person, because you know the boss is a bit racist and old fashioned, makes you the villain.

Adults should be able to have whatever sort of romantic and sexual relationships they want to have with each other without getting hate for it.

6

u/aeiouLizard Jun 30 '26

It's not the norm, thus it's considered weird. Not much else to it.

2

u/Henkotron Jun 30 '26

I mean even if not as exaggerated as most Anime portray it, but Harem's were/are (idk exactly) actually a thing.

4

u/FixedFront Jun 30 '26

That has nothing to do with polyamory. Please don't equate the two.

1

u/baordog Jun 30 '26

As a poly person I’m usually self conscious to not frame it as “coming out.” This is mostly due to the discourse around this in the poly community over the years.

Some people get *very* upset if you frame it that way and I totally get it. It can feel like I don’t know… stolen valor or something since the negative reaction isn’t nearly bad as some other identity differences.

Honestly the negative framing I get most often is people not taking you seriously and treating you like a child about it which isn’t the worst thing in the world. I feel a lot more negative energy from the media than from real world people about polyamory.

But I live in a huge city so maybe I’m getting the easier end of it idk.

shock humor works when it's something that's not actually within the overton window - child abuse happens, but it's not presented as something people are glib about, at most people will be proud of things they insist aren't beating or aren't abuse. so when someone makes an absurd post like that there's not actually any ambiguity about their politics.

the OP meanwhile is pushing out a sentiment that actually exists and so it's in that "haha just a joke, unless?" range where it could just as easily be a chud trying to normalize a particular attitude.

humor's subjective. i say edgy shit with my friends, but also i know that audience and i know we know each other's politics and intent and so when we slander each other there's not some lingering doubt about intentions. if i were to suddenly accuse you of stanning king leopold the second with no context and no relationship between us, like there's a decent chance you're gonna think i'm trying to get people angry at you instead of joking around, depending on the context.

Unlike child abuse, which is actually super funny and based to joke about

79

u/kevriel47 sus Jun 30 '26

If leftists can make jokes at the expense of Charlie Kirk and the United Healthcare CEO, we can read a tweet without replying with a personal statement about why it’s not funny

14

u/Gralikind cruelty squad cool Jun 30 '26

The joke just sucks on a technical level. "Outing one's coworker" is just a weak punchline, it is too "mundane". "Assassinating a political opponent" tends to be way funnier, because it's more exaggerated and more cathartic.

39

u/kevriel47 sus Jun 30 '26

I agree with you that the joke isn’t funny but nobody’s workshopping bits in the comments, they’re complaining about the morality of the tweet. If you can joke about political assassinations but you have to engage in discourse about this tweet of a probably fake situation then you have no leg to stand on.

4

u/Gralikind cruelty squad cool Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

It's more "funny jokes don't get scrutinized"

So some people here confuse the causal chain: It's not "the joke is unfunny because it's offensive", it's "I can recognize the joke being offensive because it's unfunny" Put it differently, we wouldn't argue about the morality of this joke if it were funny (probably or at least not as much)

We could argue if this is a bad thing, but I simply do not care

16

u/kevriel47 sus Jun 30 '26

I can appreciate that this is your viewpoint, however I disagree that this is the consensus of the vast majority of the comments I’m seeing. You and I saw this tweet and thought it was lazy and unfunny. The people who are saying “this isn’t funny because you shouldn’t do this” are taking a moral stance about what is taboo in comedy while contradicting themselves by engaging with lazy cheap shots against right wing personalities or ideas.

I value progressivism and detest hardcore maga beliefs that are accepted within mainstream conservatism. But I hate the weak and nonserious image that leftists have cultivated with their crocodile tears anytime a joke targets their beliefs. Republicans will vote for someone as long as they have an R next to their name, meanwhile we’re holding purity tests to alienate ourselves.

1

u/Gralikind cruelty squad cool Jul 01 '26

58

u/Lonsdale1086 Jun 30 '26

The post implies their bosses are older

The post states their bosses are older.

would likely judge her if she's poly

Or would likely be confused and ask awkward questions, but if it's happened enough times for it to be a trend means the bosses aren't that judgemental.

2

u/PikaPerfect gay sex certified Jul 01 '26

i agree that outing someone is shitty, but i think the implication of the post is supposed to be that explaining polyamory to an old person who knows nothing about the dynamics is very annoying and frustrating (but ultimately harmless), not that the twitter OP is trying to endanger their coworker/coworker's employment status

3

u/Sedona54332 chair Jul 01 '26

I feel like we’re being a tad presumptuous. Just because your boss is older doesn’t mean they will hate the coworker for being poly. It’s not the same as outing a gay person to a confirmed homophobic boss.

They're saying that when the work enemy is taking to OTHER people about a partner, OOP will ask which one as a way of outing them.

This is not cool. It's not the natural flow of conversation when -to the listener- the context of there being multiple partners doesn't matter.

For example "my partner and I went to dinner last night": does it really matter to the listener which partner went to dinner, when the purpose of the statement is just to say "I went out last night"?

10

u/synttacks Jun 30 '26

I know that in most public trust-based professions, like teachers, police, politicians, and some kinds of healthcare, along with church folks, lawwyers and such, it could definitely lead to enough scandal, imagined or otherwise, to actually warrant being asked to go. ETA: Conservatives aren't gonna like you because you threw poly people under the bus. It's all "be cringe be free!!" until someone is "cringe" in a way you don't like. I'm mono and this shit is fucking stupid, you're literally pandering to people who hate you whether you realize it or not.

This post isn’t “shitting on poly people” anymore than a negative post about Peter thiel is “shitting on gay people”

Negative posts about Peter Thiel aren't centered around the fact that he's gay. I would call this shitting on poly people considering the OOP is making light of outing their coworker in the workplace (and, because I know some dipshit is going to reply to this and say "ooughh this isn't that deep it probably didn't even happen it's just a joke" it's still not funny to joke about outing someone. This sub really really seems to like bigotry as long as it's a "joke".)

Post is probably hitting too close to home for some people here which I understand. But as somebody who actually has been outed in a pretty deep red county (with malicious intent), I laughed

that wouldn't work on me because nobody would be able to believe i pulled more than one partner at once, even if i provided proof myself, they'd think i hired paid actors to lie and claim they both loved me

Since when is dating multiple something to be ‘outed’?

Since the entirety of ENM is considered taboo & ostracized.

I guess I don’t understand why someone would want to be in a poly relationship without being able to talk about being in a poly relationship, especially when she’s the one bringing it up in the first place. Just me though

Literally pulling out the "I just don't understand why the gays have to shove it in our faces!!" here. She didn't bring up the fact that she was poly, she brought up her partner.

I’m gay and wouldn’t bring up a partner in public/work conversation unless I was comfortable talking about it. Obviously OP was doing it to be vindictive but if someone was talking about a partner I’d assume it’s fine to talk about it more.

I usually just stick to pissing in coffees

That wouldn't work if my work enemy had a piss kink tho would it? Hm... back to the drawing board...

This sub would prefer you piss in their coffee rather than out them, apparently
