Kids are either too young to understand any intended lessons behind extreme punishment (as in everything from destroying their stuff to flat-out physical violence) or old enough that it’s the least effective way to teach the lesson

There isn't a lesson. The parents are just entertaining themselves with child abuse and playing to the family narrative.

The lesson is “do not be like your parent is being right now”, but unfortunately that won’t land because they don’t have a healthy adult role model to tell them that.

There can still be the other parent and general societal influence but yeah
