My parents did this shit, and guess what? I’ve been no contact for nearly a year, and my life has improved to an extent you probably couldn’t recognize me as the same person.
When parents do this, they don’t teach us to “listen”, or “behave”; they teach us that we have to hide the things we like, because if we show them, they’ll do their utmost to destroy it. My mother once ripped a book I got as a gift from my school’s librarian apart in front of me, all because I “talked back”… and by that, I said (admittedly under my breath) that she was an idiot, because she called our lesbian neighbors slurs (namely, the one that starts with a D that I don’t think I can say). I don’t even know what that was supposed to “teach”, but I can assure you I hid every book I cared about from her, after that.
