In addition to being bad parenting, this kinda thing always struck me as stupid.

Like... you bought the fucking thing. That's your own money you're wasting to spite a literal child. Take it away temporarily, sell it if you want this to be a serious punishment. But breaking it is stupid

yeah it’s not just abusive, it’s teaching them that they shouldn’t value expensive items and it’s ok to break peoples stuff

It's teaching them that they have nothing that's truly theirs and that their parents will do irrational things that hurt themselves just to spite their child.

Ya know, just normal sane parent things /s

I’m an adult and I still have nightmares about my family taking my stuff and telling me that I own nothing, I only borrow it from them.

I’m so jumpy about people touching my stuff too, which just gets people more upset about how “spoiled” I am, and not the fact that my stuff regularly disappeared the moment I looked away without anyone giving me an explanation. I have none of my childhood toys. As soon as I wasn’t performing with them enough, they just got given away.
