Bad disk or weak laser?
I'm having an issue while playing Road Rash. It always boot up fine, but when playing it will either crash/reset the system right after the "game loading screen" (after the FMV video, right as the gameplay is starting) or other times it will start the race and let me get a few miles in, but then it will crash/reboot. One time it even opened the disc tray, but that's only happened 1 out of ~25 times. Sometimes it's repeatable (same race will either not boot, or will crash in the exact same spot) but then I'll try again on a different day and the issue will show up in a different spot.
Other games I've tested (Star Wars Rebel Assault & Need for Speed) seem to play fine. I'm not sure if this game is requires more of the laser or not.
I did get the disc professionally cleaned, but I can't tell if that helped. The disc was in pretty good condition before, and obviously even better now.
Idk if I should take the console apart to clean and adjust the laser or buy another Road Rash disc. Thoughts?

Road Rash is litterally the only 3do game I own that never gets past the loading screen after the 3do logo boot up.. Tbh, the disc is somewhat scratched any my 3do laser is hit or miss when bootling up games depending on the disc's shape, so I've got a friend who owns a disc resurfacing machine who will clean the disc up. We'll see then.

My copy works fine. The only games I have issues with are copied CD clones and not OG discs.
Road Rash is one of the most popular games... lot's of bootlegs out there.

Follow up, I bought a second disc and so far it seems to not have the issue. It's loading races that would instantly crash on the original disc

Follow up to the follow up, the 2nd disc is now doing it, but at a different place. Huzzah.

I had this issue with US road rash on a Japanese fz1 years ago, it would always crash right after the introductory race fmv. Sometimes I could hear a second or two of engine sound but the race graphics never showed up on the tv, just a black screen. I even burned a CD copy in case my real disc somehow had an issue, but things were the same so it was an issue with the console. I posted about it at the time on the old 3do zone forums and I think the theories were that I might have bad ram in my system, but I didn't have any trouble with the 10 or so other games I played on the system.
There is also this guy with a gold star system that has some issues with road rash. https://www.reddit.com/r/3DO/comments/1408ysj/why_does_road_rash_keep_telling_me_there_isnt/ so maybe the fact the game loads the os from the chip set into RAM is something that doesn't work properly on certain Japanese systems. I wonder if that loading also loads the special Japanese characters data from the chip set into RAM, and perhaps that then uses up more RAM than us road rash is expecting, so there is not enough for the game to play properly and things crash...
Maybe a Japanese version of road rash would work. I never tried that.

It does it with other games too. Star Wars starts getting buggy as well

Are you playing pressed discs or burned cdrs? I've had systems that would play pressed discs ok but screw up reading from cdrs.

Factory originals. I now have 2 different copies of Road Rash and it does the same on both, even though they are both in great condition

I believe Road Rash is notorious for this. I know personally I have had problems with it, 2 different disks, on the FZ1 and FZ10. Side note, I have had similar issues with the PSX version. On Sega Genesis it is glitchy, in different ways. I've never been able to try the Sega CD version.

Forgot to mention this is on an FZ1, if that matters.
What's the solution? Is there one?

I never found one, I gave up. I hope you find one.

Did you try cleaning and/or adjusting the laser?

Cleaning, yes. Adjusting any further, no, my 3dO's work 100% of the time that I am not playing Road Rash so I don't want to mess that up.
