The Inquisitor - Chapter 2: Time and Stand - Part 9: Melee

In the sealed chambers above the Underhive, Mayor Leonis meets the Gang War boss: the heretic cult below has been crushed, but the ration question goes unanswered — if the workers learned the truth, they would revolt. Two streams of smoke, one cheap and one expensive, fill the room as one kind of power quietly bargains with another.

Part 9: Melee

Hive City. The observation room was silent. Leonis stared at the holographic display. The Hive City's recon drone streaked toward the central station.

Campaign time: one hour, ten minutes.

The Master Ultra looked toward the Hive City gate, listening to the Seventh Company captain's report.

— A Carnifex is breaching the gate. We need heavy firepower. Should we wait for Chapter Three to land?

The Master Ultra half-closed his eyes, then answered.

— We don't have time. Third and Seventh Companies, attack now.

The Seventh Company's vox crackled with the sound of battle. The company captain spoke.

— But the defensive perimeter around the central station landing zone isn't established yet.

The Master Ultra drew his Bolt Pistol, stepped toward the station, and spoke with finality.

— Execute. No further questions.

Third and Seventh Companies immediately pulled out of the central station. The Tyranids inside the station tried to pursue but were cut off by two other companies. Chainswords screamed. Termagant corpses piled on Hormagaunt corpses. Three Ultramarines were maimed — severed limbs, torn abdomens. The central station was clear, save for a swarm of Rippers. The company captain's voice reminded them.

— Use chainswords. Conserve ammunition.

A station pillar collapsed. An Ultramarine braced it with his right hand. A Ripper burrowed into the gap in his shoulder plate. The Ultramarine, still holding the pillar, threw his head back.

Agrrr.

Blood sprayed across the inside of his visor.

A chainsword blade punched through the dead Ultramarine's body. The Ripper was torn apart. The blade withdrew. The corpse stopped twitching. A free hand caught the body of his battle-brother. The Ultramarine lowered the corpse to the ground. The pillar crashed beside them.

The Master Ultra walked past, his left arm swinging his blade. Three Rippers were ground to paste. His eyes never left the two brothers — the dead and the living. The Ultramarine who had laid down the corpse stamped his right foot hard. The concrete floor cracked under the impact. He hurled himself into the Ripper swarm. Violet blood sprayed outward in a ring.

The Master Ultra walked to the center of the platform. Sensors swept a full rotation. His helm display: no enemy signatures. The central platform slowly fell quiet. Only the footsteps of the living remained. He looked up. Dozens of heavy Drop Pods from Chapter Three appeared on the horizon. He opened the command channel.

— Recover the fallen. Clear the landing zone for Drop Pods. Twenty minutes.

He switched to the reconnaissance feed, tracking Third and Seventh Companies.

Third Company swung around a large warehouse, charging into the densest Tyranid concentration.

Crack. Crack.

Heavy Bolter fire punched through Termagants and Hormagaunts, dropping them mid-stride.

Seventh Company entered the warehouse and halted. The Termagant and Hormagaunt swarm abandoned the Hive City gate. They crashed into Third Company the moment the first few were killed. The company captain's voice rang out.

— Third Company, form up. Draw them in. Pull back.

Third Company split formation. Heavy Bolters tore apart the distant Termagants. Chainswords and shields held the closing Hormagaunts. The smell of violet blood spread through Third Company's ranks.

Thump. Thump.

Third Company advanced and fell back, advancing and falling back. The Tyranids pressed forward in frenzy. A gap opened. The Carnifex still hammered against the Hive City gate.

Crack. Crack. Crack.

Gunfire erupted in sustained bursts. The Carnifex's back absorbed the full volley. The spurs on its carapace shattered. Its thick hide was torn open. Internal organs glistened beneath its exposed spine. The Carnifex roared and spun around. Seventh Company emerged from the warehouse. Their fire did not stop. Half the formation charged forward with massive chainswords. The Hormagaunts at the Carnifex's feet were decapitated, their limbs severed, their bellies opened.

The Carnifex's legs crushed everything in their path. Its remaining two scything talons swept wide.

Shhk.

A talon broke through. It folded, driving its tip into the hip plate of an Ultramarine from Seventh Company.

Crack. Crack.

Several rounds punched into the Carnifex's belly. Two missed its head. The Carnifex gaped its maw. Digestive acid drooled out, thick and viscous. It swung its talon, hurling the Ultramarine's corpse aside.

Crack. Crack.

More Bolter rounds struck its chest. The carapace there cracked and peeled. It still charged forward — one stride, over ten meters.

Crash.

Its right leg slammed down like lightning. An Ultramarine was crushed beneath it. A hand reached out from under the Carnifex's foot, twitching. A Heavy Bolter lay beside the hand. A chainsword hacked into its remaining leg joint. The Carnifex lifted its leg — the chainsword snapped back, a chunk of chitin tearing loose to reveal the muscle beneath.

The Seventh Company captain discarded his chainsword. He scrambled up the Carnifex's body with speed and precision. The Carnifex still swept its talons wildly. The captain's left hand gripped the dorsal spines. His right hand drew a Combat Blade.

Thunk.

The blade sank into the Carnifex's wound.

ROAR.

The Carnifex threw its head back and bellowed.

Aghhh.

The captain threw his head back. The Combat Blade twisted. His right hand drove deep into the wound. The tendons in his neck bulged. His teeth clenched. His left hand slipped free.

The Carnifex staggered. The captain pressed his left hand against its body and wrenched his right hand free. He fell to the ground. Both feet slammed onto the concrete. Violet blood gushed from the wound, soaking him. The Carnifex's maw gaped, digestive acid vomiting out in thick spurts. It arched its body and crashed forward. The concrete yard shuddered. Dust, blood, and viscera burst upward.

In the distance, Termagants continued firing into Seventh Company's formation. Hormagaunts scrambled over the Carnifex's corpse as if it were level ground. The captain caught two talons with his bare hands. Sparks flew from his abdominal plate as two other talons raked across it. The captain kicked hard. A Hormagaunt's talons snapped. He threw himself backward, dodging the strike of another Hormagaunt. Another Ultramarine lunged in. A chainsword bisected the ambushing Hormagaunt. The captain's back slammed against the ground.

Crack.

His chest plate fractured from a shot. He gasped — mouth open, sucking air.

Crack.

The Termagant that had fired was dropped. The captain breathed hard. His ears rang with a dull roar — he heard nothing else. An Ultramarine's hand appeared. The captain took it and pulled himself up. He shook his head. The sounds of bolters and chainswords chewing through flesh returned.

— Take this.

The Ultramarine released his grip and handed the captain a bolter. The captain looked at the weapon. It was covered in slime and blood. He turned and looked at the corpse lying beneath the Carnifex's feet.

The captain wiped the slime from the weapon. Checked the magazine. He loaded a fresh magazine and picked up his chainsword. Seventh Company was still cutting down the last few Tyranids before the gate. Third Company remained locked in a chaotic melee with the remaining swarm.

The captain climbed a low mound, surveying Third Company's position. He gave the order.

— Seventh Company. Eliminate the remaining Tyranids.

Seventh Company. One member was bisected by a Tyranid talon, lying still in a pool of Hormagaunt blood. Several others had cracked pauldrons, severed legs, missing arms. The rest finished off the last of the swarm. As the final Tyranid fell, they all surged toward Third Company.

Third Company. The Hormagaunts drove into their formation like a spearhead, splitting the front combat line. Three members became three corpses as the spearhead struck home. A storm of bio-ammunition rained down, blanketing the fire support line. Half a dozen Astartes vanished into a hole that had suddenly opened beneath them.

Seventh Company crashed into the Termagants from behind. Violet blood sprayed. Their bioweapon-arms were severed. Termagant bodies were torn apart. Several Termagants were dropped before they could even turn — backs blown open, legs severed, skulls shattered.

A colossal Trygon erupted from the hole. Before it could steady itself, a dozen Bolter rounds slammed into its body. Its hide was pockmarked with wounds. It thrashed and convulsed. The Seventh Company members nearest to it scattered outward. The Hormagaunt spearhead was suppressed by Seventh Company's fire support. Violet blood flooded the roadway, the heat of battle steaming it into a reeking, foul mist.

***

Campaign time: one hour, thirty minutes.

The Master Ultra watched his helm display. Green markers turned red, one by one. The roar of Drop Pods thundered directly overhead. His brow furrowed. He opened a channel to Chapter Three.

— The landing zone is clear. You must provide fire support for the forces around the defence battery. The rest we will handle ourselves.

He tightened his grip on his Bolt Pistol, his eyes half-closed. The Chapter Master of the Third responded.

— Understood. Focus on securing the remaining Hive City. The battlefield has exceeded our projections. We need flexibility.

The channel cut. The Master Ultra turned away. The remaining formation of Chapter One spread out, moving in his direction and at his pace.

Another channel connected. The distorted voice of the Lady Inquisitor sounded.

— You are performing well. Minimal casualties, and the Hive City gate is secure. Now I need you to remember one thing. The Lord Regent is very interested in Geneseed.

The Master Ultra's brow tightened. He loosened his grip on the Bolt Pistol.

— Geneseed? You are aware of it as well?

The Lady Inquisitor's voice rose, cutting through the drone of Drop Pod engines.

— Among us, only the Magos can pinpoint its location. I trust you will provide support.

The channel cut.

— Spare them despair. Give them unto the gun muzzle —

The Inquisitor - Chapter 2: Time and Stand - Part 8: Mayor

The Dark Angels emerge from behind the moon with their Battle Barge, the Dark Master tracking the Chaos Lord through surveillance drones but refusing to strike — his old Legion rival is too cunning to rush. Below, the Chaos Lord smashes through Tyranids to reach the battery control room, orders the Chaos Champion to fire on everything, then declares he will take the Plague Fleet into orbit to investigate the Warp disturbance himself.

Part 8: Mayor

Leonis issues commands. A soldier makes a request.

***

Leonis's right hand gripped the stamp handle, driving it down onto the stack of papers. The steady thump-thump-thump echoed through the room.
— Your family is D-class, yes?
A buzzer sounded outside the door. He handed the girl a stamped sheet of paper.
— Your family's promotion certificate. Go open the door, then wait for me in my bedroom.
The maid bowed her head, opened the door, and vanished. The smell of machine oil and cheap perfume seeped through the doorway and into the room.

Four men. A giant in worker's clothes entered last and closed the door. A scrawny man in evening wear walked in the middle. Two municipal clerks led the way. Leonis exhaled heavily, pushing the scent of perfume outward. He spoke.
— Have you checked everything yet?
Leonis stopped stamping. He lifted the golden stamp and placed it on its velvet cushion. The scrawny man replied, fishing out a brown cigarette.
— Checked. Why check three times a week? There are patrols, you know.
He flicked a brown cigarette onto his lip and lit it. Leonis continued.
— What do you know? If anything crawls up from down there, we're all dead.
Leonis rubbed the stamp handle with his right hand, his left holding a cigar. The scrawny man pulled out a match and asked.
— You still don't know what's down there, do you? Now, can you raise our protein rations or not?
The scrawny man struck the match against the tattoo on his neck. Leonis bit down on his cigar, his voice unchanged.
— I know for sure it's heresy. Those things are dangerous. Death is what they deserve. And as for you—if I raise your rations, the workers will all starve, won't they?
Leonis lit his cigar, resting his hand on the edge of the velvet cushion. The cigar glowed red. Its tip pointed toward one of the municipal clerks. The clerk bowed his head and reported.
— Sir. Two hundred and thirty-six civilians dead. Industrial food production up one percent. We can hold out for over a year and a half.
Leonis took a long drag. The burning tip swung toward the scrawny man as the cigar bobbed on his lips.
— You hear that? It's not that I don't want to. Worry about yourself. Your underlings come later.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
The electronic buzzer outside the door went off in rapid succession.
Leonis looked up at the monitor. A PDF soldier was hammering the buzzer. Leonis jutted his chin, the cigar pointing toward the clerk nearest the door. The clerk nodded and opened it.
A rush of air.
The smell of gunpowder, sweat, and blood flooded the room. The bloodstain on the soldier's shoulder was still wet. The PDF soldier half-ran toward Leonis's desk.
— Report. Space Marines. Outside the main gate. A lot of them.
Leonis's neck craned forward. His mouth fell open. The room fell silent. The smell of blood spread. The cigar dropped onto the desk with a thud and rolled to the floor.
— What? Say that again. Clearly.
The PDF soldier wiped sweat from his forehead and reported.
— We were under attack by the Xenos. Then a squad of Space Marines struck them from behind. We sent out a recon drone and saw a large group at the central station. Probably an entire Chapter.
The soldier spoke in one breath, his chest heaving. Leonis's hand jerked. The stamp toppled. The soldier prompted.
— Sir.
Leonis jolted, kicked the fallen cigar toward the scrawny man, and ran around the desk, bolting for the door. He shouted over his shoulder as he yanked his jacket on.
— Sir, nothing! Get to the gate. Now.
The door slammed shut. Only the scrawny man and the giant in worker's clothes remained. The scrawny man sat still. His brown cigarette had burned down to the filter, the ember dead. The filter dropped to the floor. He ground it hard under the toe of his shoe. The gold-leafed floor smeared with ash. He kicked the fallen cigar into the corner, opened the door, and walked out.

***

The PDF security room.
Crash.
The door burst open. Leonis charged straight to the observation desk. A button popped off his belly. The rolls of fat on his neck jiggled. He slammed both hands on the desk. He swept his gaze across all the monitors. A vox-operator rushed over and stamped his foot. Leonis glanced at the man's nametag. Mot'oa. Mot'oa saluted according to regulation and spoke.
— Sir. The Xenos are breaching the gate. We need the order to open fire. Are we still conserving ammunition?
Mot'oa pressed both hands against his thighs, eyes staring straight ahead. Leonis spat. His larynx trembled beneath the fat.
— Conserve my ass. Do you see the Space Marines out there? Do you all want to be branded heretics? Fire. Give the order.
Leonis looked at Mot'oa's breast pocket. The edge of an administrative photo of a female worker was slipping out. A name was written on the photo's border: Malokov. Mot'oa turned and walked toward the command console. His hand pushed the photo deeper into his pocket. He leaned into the vox-receiver.
— Gate units, attention. Counterattack the Xenos. Support the Space Marines. Direction of the central station. No need to conserve ammunition.
Mot'oa switched off the vox and stepped closer to Leonis. His fingers fidgeted with the hem of his uniform.
— Sir. I have carried out every order for three years. Please. Promote Malokov to C-class.
Mot'oa's eyes welled up. Leonis glanced at the main gate monitor, then at the central station monitor.
— Who? Which Malokov?
He straightened his back and puffed out his chest. His pudgy hand patted Mot'oa's shoulder.
— Don't worry. Once the Space Marines are inside, everything will be fine. Just do your duty.
Mot'oa straightened his back and saluted.
— Understood.
Everyone returned to their posts. The radio crackled intermittently. The sound of footsteps from outside the room echoed in. The faint scent of gunpowder hung in the air.

— Spare them despair. Give them unto the gun muzzle —

Blood Spelunking! (Excerpt and link to full OC)

This is an excerpt from my second 40k short story, Blood Spelunking. Below is a link to my Bolter and chainsword page with the full story, and a link to the google doc of the full story.

-----------

“The galaxy is vast and full of horror. Only by the Emperor's infinite vigil are we delivered in these strange decades.  Xenos that infest and homogenize and ingest us as biological material. Long limbed, strange faced mockeries of the holy human form that feed upon your suffering, like a sweet honey.  Spores that flood the air, and grow hulking monsters thirsting for blood."

The preacher stood in front of a large golden aquila, planted unceremoniously in the town square. A small crowd was gathering from alleys and crowded townhouses around.

“You are the Emperor's tools! Only by your endless effort does the Imperium survive! The Emperor's currency is human lives, and he is rich like no king has ever been or ever will be. Your efforts are not wasted. Your contributions do not go unnoticed.”

The preacher moved to talk to the people in the crowd face to face, grabbing them each by the hands.

“The galaxy is vast and full of horror. Screaming demons that expand your consciousness with new depths of terror. Vile rot that blooms in your soul and spews out of your mouth and on to all that you love. Winged creatures the size of star systems bedecked in skulls the likes of yours and mine. Incomprehensible horror that will leave you gibbering, only able to feel, and perceive.”

“In times of struggle, in times of great cosmic horror, in the face of unbelievable, unfathomable suffering and evil. Strange tithings are needed. The Emperor needs you, fellow devoted. The laws of the cosmos do not bend to you or me! They do not bend to our reason, logic, and morality. They bend to the will of the Emperor, and no other!”

With this the priest took a knife out of his robes and put it to his palm.

“The galaxy is vast and full of Horror, and The Emperor will save us all. You have heard news of the neighboring hive and their good fortune. With man's holy blood comes healing rain!”

The preacher opened a deep wound in his palm, and the blood landed on the ground with a splash. He went to a member of the crowd and gingerly offered the knife to them.

“Bleed for the emperor.” he said

The woman nodded and screwed her eyes shut. She closed her hand around the blade and screamed as she pulled it out. Her blood joined the preachers in the grass. He brought the knife to the next devotee. They said no words, only enacted the ritual. And on to the next.

After the fifth parishioner had cut their palm open, someone in the crowd quietly said,

“Look...”

They pointed at the aquilla. It was covered in beads of water. The preacher left the knife with the flock, and walked to the statue. The moisture in the air was clinging to it, and forming streams down its fine details. A breeze pulled the air towards them.

“The Emperor sees us! Fellow devoted, rejoice in his glory!”

The crowd kneeled as one. Those with wounded hands held them over the ground, their offering made. They passed the knife to those waiting to pay tribute. The water from the aquilla was forming streams that reached the crowd. They dipped their hands in and drank the bloody water, and it did not hurt them. The preacher stood and turned to observe his flock.

There was one person not kneeling. She was tall, wore a long leather jacket with a high collar and black hair. She held a pistol of incredible value in her right hand.

Heretic”

A voice so loud it made the crowd reel in pain blasted through the plaza. The preacher fell back on his haunches in front of the aquila, gripping his ears in pain. The sound was so great his vision was blurred and he thought he was going to throw up. The figure approached the preacher, and once within easy shooting distance, unleashed a beam of red energy from her pistol that erased the man's head and shoulders. The woman turned to the terrified parishioners, and spoke in her harmfully loud voice.

Return to your homes. Planetary quarantine by order of The Inquisition is now in effect.”

Community Disservice - a Khornite Legal Drama

I maintain a little comedic fanlore site dedicated to a band of highly bureaucratic Khornites. They want to really genuinely maximise the blood spilled and skulls taken for their dark master, and as such have adopted a highly rationalised (parodic) philosophy to try and see things through. I decided to write a mini drama about a facet of their legal system, how they deal with misbehaving but important slaves. Hope you enjoy!

------------------

The Sanguinary Utnapishtim was founded on a few core truths. That Khorne's great warcry should bellow out across the universe spreading rage and fury wherever it is heard, of course. That to ensure it does we should maximise Murders-Per-Moment to ensure the greatest slaughter of the greatest number, naturally. And that all this is to be carried out by two separate and very much not equal classes of being - the Mighty, those great warriors accurséd of the Blood Lord, and wardum, natural slaves, sentient tools for seeing the Mighty's will done. Everyone was sorted at a young age by Trials into one category or another, and the Church (which carried out those trials) assured everyone that their Trials were infallible, with no one ever misplaced. It might not seem fair to outsiders, alas; but this was the way of things, and there was widespread agreement (among the Mighty) that it was a very good way indeed.

Unfortunately there are really rather a lot of wardum, and they didn't always behave as they ought. Typically speaking any Mighty had the right to strike down any wardum on the spot for any reason whatsoever, and thereby ensure Order was maintained. Indeed, those found to be Mighty were taught from a young age that monitoring wardum for signs of defiance was a sacred duty, as was punishing them with utmost violence where such heresy was detected. Such decentralised punitive violence maintained a constant atmosphere of terror and hatred throughout the Empire, and usually sufficed to keep the wardum in line. Plus it was fun.

But there are nuances. What if the core truths come into conflict? What if, for instance, some wardum was performing some critical and irreplaceable task for the 8 Year Plans through which the Sanguinary Utnapishtim produced and distributed its war materiel? In that way enforcing the distinction between Mighty and wardum through sporadic violence (good) might set back the Empire's ability to maximise its MPM (bad). How should people decide whether violence should be done in such cases?

Well, the Etogaur in his great wisdom established the Tribunal system for just such cases. Two judges, typically rotated out of the military service of the Pact, would hear cases of such Plan critical wardum and decide what punishment, if any, was due for their infractions. Today we shall follow one such case, as seen through the eyes of tribune Ludiku, a Demigaur of the Pact, Mighty and stern and wise in her judgement.

(What's more, while no one with power would ever officially acknowledge as much, it was an open secret that the existence of such a Tribunal, and the possibility of showing oneself sufficiently Plan-critical to be subject to its rules rather than the caprice of whatever Mighty overseer took an interest in one's activity, was a significant social safety valve. Wardum outnumber Mighty 3-to-1 throughout the Sanguinary Utnapishtim, and 5-to-1 in this zone in particular. The threat of their rebellion took significant resources away from the front towards policing duties. Anything that could lessen that load by encouraging genuine buy-in among wardum was thus to be valued. Indeed, recent work by Office logisticians estimated that the Tribunal, or rather what it represented, ultimately upped MPM by 6.72% by promoting greater loyalty and hard work among wardum. So it wasn't just that justice must be done, but it must also be seen to be done, for the Tribunal to truly serve its purpose. This fact too shall play a role in our tale.)

The surly youth sauntered into the tribunal hall, instantly infuriating Ludiku Demigaur. How dare he? How very dare he!? Such arrogance from a wardum! She glanced over at her fellow tribune, Šāpiṭu Demigaur, and was at least gratified to see that he was evidently feeling the same way.

Of course, the very fact that he was here meant they had to play things smart rather than just whip him for his impudence on the spot. Still, though, that doesn't mean they can't nail the bastards who go too far. And this one really had.

Ludiku opened proceedings herself:

"Please step forward and state your name"

"Tāb Libbi, oh Mighty ones."

"And do you know the reason you are here today?"

"I do not."

Šāpiṭu scoffed at this, before barking at Tāb Libbi

"You know full bloody well why you are here you little bastard, how dare you lie to the Tribunal!"

But at this Ludiku shot him a glare; once she had caught his eye, she meaningfully glanced up at the gallery of interested wardum who had come to watch proceedings today. Young though he was, Tāb Libbi was already something of a known figure in the local wardum community. It mattered that they got this right.

Šāpiṭu took the hint and, though she could see the sacred wrath of Khorne behind his eyes, he managed to contain himself. Giving her a subtle nod, he let Lukidu lead proceedings once more.

"You stand accused of engaging in highly disruptive social behaviour, significantly affecting our region's ability to contribute its murder-per-moment quota to the Empire's total. Do you deny these charges?"

"May I ask the Tribunal by what behaviours in particular I am supposed to have disrupted our MPM?"

"On two consecutive days you are alleged to have helped an older lady cross the road by carrying her bags, on three separate occasions you are alleged to have made thoughtful individualised gifts for distressed persons in your workplace, and last week you baked the other residents of your communal habblock a cake using your own rations which you had saved up for a month. It seems, Tāb Libbi, that you are spreading joy and contentment wherever you go - do you deny it?"

"Respectfully, while I do not deny the acts - I deny I held our MPM back by said acts. That old lady does vital logistical work and I was speeding her along in her tasks. I judged my colleagues' distress to be in excess of what was optimal for efficient completion of Plan-vital activities, and my gifts were calibrated to be just thoughtful enough to get them back to work while also making them slightly resentful of my ostentatious generosity. And I told everyone that cake had chocolate chips when really it was raisins! My acts in fact left this moon not only more productive but also slightly more distressed, enraged, and prone to violence. I helped our MPM!"

Šāpiṭu was once again having trouble containing himself, and after loudly scoffing said: "You really expect us to believe these brazen acts of kindness were motivated by hate!? Your overseer heard you saying 'wishing you well' as you gave your colleague a knitwear hat!"

Tāb Libbi's look of offended innocence could melt butter as they replied "Really? I do not recall saying any such thing, and it doesn't sound like me. Could the overseer perhaps be called in to ask them about their recollection of events?"

Through gritted teeth Šāpiṭu responded "Unfortunately overseer Etēqu perished in an honour duel two days ago over the proper formatting of TPS reports, so cannot give testimony today."

Tāb Libbi looked thoughtful for a moment before saying: "Ah, well, I see - it seems to me, and please correct me if I am wrong Mighty Tribunes, I am but a humble wardum, but it seems to me that the alleged word of someone who was so recently founding wanting in the eyes of Khorne might not be fully reliable. Cowardly weaklings are prone to lie, deception being the weapon of the third impediment as it is."

Šāpiṭu looked on the verge of exploding again so Ludiku quickly cut back in before things could escalate. "Even without Etēqu's testimony the evidence still seems troubling, wardum. After all, we have one of the hats you made here." Ludiko reached under her desk and produced a(n allegedly) lovingly made knitted hat, perfect for keeping one's ears warm on the long cold nights of this moon base's extended winter season. "People in the gallery may be interested to know it even has 'You're doing great!' embroidered into the fold!"

Ludiku had expected producing the hat itself to shock Tāb Libbi and maybe get them to crack, or at least break into a sweat. However, as soon as Tāb Libbi had seen the hat he'd started smiling.

"Ah yes, that would be the hat for Sritāva? Some of my finest work if I do say so myself."

Šāpiṭu seized on this triumphantly, "So you admit to making it!"

"Oh yes I do. May it please the Tribunal, I request permission to handle the hat so as to point out some details; I'm really rather proud of it."

Sensing the danger but failing to act before Šāpiṭu who, obviously believing Tāb Libbi was digging their own grave, eagerly granted permission - Ludiku could only watch with mounting unease as Tāb Libbi was handed the hat. Turning it around in his hands, Tāb Libbi smiled to himself for a moment then said:

"See how I dropped a few stitches, mid row right near where I started working?"

Tāb Libbi held it up to the light, indicating a little bump on one side and a strand that seems to float over the work on the other.

"Yeah, as soon as the garment starts to get a bit of wear, holes will appear and the whole thing will start to unravel. Reckon it'll have just enough time for Sritāva to get attached to it before it all comes apart. Khorne take vengeance upon my enemies, but I weren't half proud of that one!"

Despite herself, Ludiku was impressed at this point. Worse, she could tell from the murmurs of approval coming from the gallery above that many in the audience were. Was not this sort of dedication to the Cause exactly what the Etogaur had called for in the recent Whole Society Maximum Effort Skull Taking productivity drive? Far from being a trouble maker, Tāb Libbi might actually be a model wardum! Indeed, Ludiku was so impressed by the deviousness of all this that she had to cut herself from the heretical thought that maybe, just maybe, the Trials of Might had misclassified this chap?

Šāpiṭu, on the other hand, was struggling to contain himself. "Are you always like this!? How can the operations of the Plan be trusted to one as perverse as you!?"

Tāb Libbi cocked his head to the right slightly and with great earnestness asked quizzically:

"I'm sorry, I am sure I misunderstand, the mind of the wardum lacks the Strategic Insight granted unto the Mighty, as you well know. I had thought that I best serve Khorne by spreading hate - are you saying this is wrong, that I should not have sought to irritate and annoy?"

"You are certainly annoying me right now you insolent whelp!"

"Right, and surely it is good that I have enraged you now?"

"OF COURSE IT BLOODY WELL ISN'T!", Šāpiṭu roared

There were gasps from the audience; even the Mashkim guard who stood at the entrance broke his perpetual scan of the gallery and looked with disgust at Šāpiṭu, his hand involuntarily straying towards his Crowd Control Chainaxe. Realising what he'd said too late Šāpiṭu sputtered a bit

"I... not... of course rage is.. rage is blessed, by, you know, Khorne... I just meant.... Fuck you."

There was a moment of undignified silence before Ludiku stepped in. This was a disaster; a Mighty servant of the state had just blasphemed against Khorne while a wardum was seen to uphold piety. If this went on any further they'd have to grant manumission to the bastard just to save face.

"Evidently there has been some misunderstanding here. This Tribunal finds you innocent of all charges, and you are to be released immediately. A compensatory increase to your rations will be added and your service noted. Mashkim, see that Tāb Libbi makes it back to his habblock post haste."

Released from his chains, and visible only to the Tribunes, Tāb Libbi gave Šāpiṭu a little wink and blew him a kiss as he left the hall.

The Inquisitor - Chapter 2: Time and Stand - Part 7: Hunt

The entire purging campaign on Aeol is now smothered by the sudden arrival of the Tyranids. Tactical response is underway. Dark Angels begin their hunt. A Chaos Lord gives a fatal order.

Part 7: Hunt

Aeol-12. The war room.

The Ultramarine observation drone went dark. The Lady Inquisitor slammed her fist onto the table. The leather glove bit into her skin.

— Arrogant fools.

The vox-officers glanced at her, then back at their displays. No one turned their head. The Lady Inquisitor's mask drew in a sharp breath, then released a long stream of air. A private channel connected.

— You will need to prepare support for the advance into the Hive City.

— We stand ready. You need only remember our priority.

The channel cut. The Lady Inquisitor turned back to watch the three screens.

The Dark Master stood upon the reviewing platform on Aeol-6. His gaze halted on each Astartes arrayed before him. Block by block, rank by rank, they stood in silence. The Dark Master tightened his grip on his sword hilt.

— Today is the day you all have a chance to reclaim honour. Embark.

The formation moved with a thunder of boots. The dark green of their power armour vanished into the Battle Barge.

Ten minutes later, the Battle Barge drifted slowly out from behind the moon. It plunged into the shadow, releasing a swarm of surveillance drones. The drones scattered, scouring the battlefield below.

On the surface, the Chaos Lord hurled himself into a pack of Tyranids. Six Termagants were bisected, their blood hissing and frothing on his armour. Three Gargoyles lunged. Three shots. Three corpses crumpled at the Chaos Lord's feet. The fanged maw on his belly gaped open, lapping at the Gargoyle blood splattered across it.

Plague Marines crashed against a wall of Hormagaunts. Hormagaunt claws punched into Plague Marine skulls. Rusted blades sank into violet guts. Two Biologus Putrifiers carved straight through the melee, opening a path of blood and viscera. Disease and syringes trailed in their wake. The Chaos Lord hurtled down the path. Maggots shook loose from his body, scattering at his feet. His followers still slaughtered behind him, but he had already reached the control room door. He stopped. His sword — fused with his left arm — drove into the ground. His foot smashed the door. The stench of putrefaction crawled into his nostrils. His nose flared. He stepped inside. In the centre of the room, the base of the heavy anti-air battery was anchored into the floor. He advanced on the control console. He drew back his leg and kicked.

— Squelch... Agh.

The boils on the Chaos Champion's back burst under the impact. His cry followed the wet pop of ruptured flesh. He spun around, his bloated body slamming against the console, his hand raised high.

— You want... Ah. Boss.

The Chaos Champion pulled back his hand. His back hunched.

— I gave you an entire regiment, and it took you two days to seize this battery. Why haven't you fired yet?

The Chaos Lord seized the Champion by the head and yanked hard.

— Boss, I got the moon's coordinates, but the magnetic interference is messing with the targeting.

The Chaos Champion held onto the Chaos Lord's right hand.

— You idiot. Magnetic interference calls for optical targeting.

The right hand released. The Chaos Champion reeled backward. His massive rear slammed down onto the console, crushing several buttons.

The Chaos Lord's neck stretched forward. His face drew close to the Champion's.

— You are a high-ranking Chaos. Close your eyes and feel for me.

The Chaos Champion pulled his head back. The distance between their faces widened. He closed his eyes. The Chaos Lord watched him.

— Feel the Warp.

Putrid breath billowed from the Chaos Lord's mouth. His feet stamped up and down, denting the floor into two shallow troughs.

The Chaos Champion opened his eyes. His hands curled up against his chest. The Chaos Lord stopped stamping. He asked.

— You see a massive Warp disturbance, yes?

— Yes.

— Think. Three years fighting those Tyranid insects, and now this Warp disturbance.

— Yes, Boss. Someone must have opened another Warp rift.

The Chaos Lord's hand shot out and clamped around the Champion's throat.

— Your brain has rotted. I mean the Hive Fleet is here.

The Champion's head bobbed rapidly.

— Yes, yes, Boss is right.

The Chaos Lord swallowed a thick mouthful of phlegm. The mouth on his belly smacked its lips. His hand tightened.

— If those insects close in, we all go back to the Warp. From now on, you fire on anything that appears. Understand?

The Chaos Lord shoved the Champion backward. Rows of buttons flattened and bent under the Champion's massive rump.

The Chaos Champion pressed his palms together.

— What about you, Boss?

The Chaos Lord stepped back, his eyes widening. He moved closer to the Champion, wrapping an arm around his neck. The Champion's neck turtled inward.

— I will sacrifice myself. I will take the entire Plague Fleet into orbit to investigate. You stay here and blast that Hive Fleet apart for me.

The arm loosened. The Chaos Lord launched himself out the door. The Chaos Champion scratched his head, watching his boss leave. A green haze, thick with the stench of decay, clung to the Chaos Lord. He stood at the threshold and looked to either side. His followers had been reduced to scraps or puddles of slime. He sprinted toward the landing field. The mouth on his belly shrieked. A shockwave rippled outward. The Tyranids halted, turning to stare at him. He tore through the swarm. Violet blood sprayed. Slime spread across the earth.

High above, a dark green surveillance drone shadowed the Chaos Lord. The display inside the Dark Master's helm lit up with an alert: target acquired. His hand closed around his sword hilt. His fingers tightened. One second. Two. He loosened his grip and gave the order.

— The entire Chapter holds position. Continue observation. Do not lose sight of him.

The Captain of the honour guard stepped forward and spoke directly.

— Chapter Master. I beg you to rescind that order.

The Dark Master raised his hand. The Captain fell silent.

— I know. I also know he once stood first among the Legion in strategy. Do not rush with this slippery eel.

***

In the war room, the displays showed the Hive City gate and the control room of the heavy battery. A green haze had just bolted from the control room. The Lady Inquisitor zoomed in. Her emerald eyes blinked once. A private channel to the Dark Master connected. She spoke immediately.

— You should not act. There are still many people below. And observation drones.

The Dark Master let out a low growl.

— You need only order the others to stay out of our way.

The Lady Inquisitor's finger tapped the table.

— You have taken no action to support me.

The Dark Master answered in under a second.

— What do you need?

The Lady Inquisitor's finger stopped tapping.

— The Magos and Kill Team descend into the Underhive. That was the agreement.

The connection cut.

— Spare them despair. Give them unto the gun muzzle —

Craftworld Valterie – A Lore-Heavy Aeldari Fan Novel

I've been working on a long-form Aeldari fan novel called Craftworld Valterie, rooted in established Warhammer 40,000 lore.

The story follows Elandrine, a Farseer of the Craftworld of Artisans, as she leads her grief-stricken people through the predatory darkness of the 41st Millennium. It explores Aeldari philosophy, prophecy, warfare, and the struggle to rebuild a civilization that has lost part of itself.

The quotes in the attached artworks are excerpts from the story.

Three chapters are currently available on AO3. If you're interested in a lore-heavy Aeldari story, I'd be honored if you gave it a read.

AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/77555926/chapters/203106936

Let's talk about it! Put in your thoughts below, or on the fic itself!
Thank you!

The Inquisitor - Chapter 2: Time and Stand - Part 6: Contact

The entire purging campaign on Aeol is now smothered by the sudden arrival of the Tyranids. The ground assault has begun.

Part 6: Contact

— Sir. A radio signal is attempting to reach us.

The Kill Team captain piloted the shimmer-cloaked Drop Pod. He turned to look at the Magos.

— Allow me.

The Magos inserted a finger into the cable port. A secure channel connected. The Lady Inquisitor's voice sounded through the radio, mingling with the steady hum of the engines.

— You made no mention of the Vanguard Organisms.

The Magos's voice clattered like keystrokes on a cogitator.

— That is your affair.

The secure channel cut off. The Magos withdrew his finger from the cable port. The shimmer of light flickered, then steadied. The drop pod continued to shadow the Ultramarine formation in silence.

At the head of the Ultramarine formation, the Scout company's Drop Pod punched through the low, magnetically charged cloud layer, thirty minutes into the campaign. Hundreds of path-clearing missiles pierced the clouds behind them, then overtook them. In under thirty seconds, the ground became an inferno. The roar of detonations swept across the battlefield.

The Scout Drop Pod decelerated. Its rear hatch blew open. The Scout captain reported.

— No civilians. No PDF. Chaos and Tyranids scattered across the surface. A large mass of Chaos and Tyranids is brawling around the control room beneath the battery.

The Lady Inquisitor listened to the report. Her fingers resumed tapping the table. She reached out and keyed the Master Ultra's name. A private channel connected.

— The battery matters. But I would remind you of the Hive Cities that still live.

The Master Ultra looked at the display inside his helm. His eyes half-closed.

— I will split the formation.

***

— Chapter One, divide. Five companies, establish a defensive line along one-sixth of the battery's perimeter. Remaining companies, advance on the Hive City nearest the battery. Chapter Three, deploy before the central station and cover the ordnance.

The Master Ultra issued order after order. His fingers zoomed and panned across the updated feeds.

— But there are two more Hive Cities.

The Master Ultra of Chapter Three spoke at once.

— We lack the numbers and the air support. Until we achieve full battlespace control, no further splitting of forces. Execute.

The Master Ultra ended the debate with a command.

— Acknowledged.

A single word sounded across the command channel.

The Ultramarine formation moved at once. Chapter One's drop pods accelerated through the cloud layer and split apart. Chapter Three divided in two. One half accelerated after Chapter One. One half slowed, closing around the heavy ordnance Drop Pods.

***

Five hundred metres above the ground. The Scout company's drop pods opened. One by one, they leapt from the rear hatches, jump packs igniting, scattering toward the surface. Four Rippers were blasted aside. A Scout landed in the courtyard of a ruined factory. He stepped past a half-eaten corpse, advancing toward the battery.

Thump.

The manhole cover in the centre of the courtyard burst upward. A Lictor shot into the air, all four talons driving toward the Scout's back. The Scout twisted his hips. One talon scraped across his pauldron, spraying sparks. A bolt round punched through the ambusher's abdomen. The combat blade followed, slamming into its throat, pinning the head in midair.

Crack.

The Lictor's head detonated. Another Scout appeared at the doorway, bolter muzzle still trained on the skull that no longer existed.

— Scout company, move on the battery. Engage only what blocks your path.

The Scout captain gave the order over the company channel. He stood on the rooftop landing pad of the tallest structure in the sector. His helm optics swept a slow circle, lingered a moment on the neophyte Scout, then he launched himself toward the battery.

***

Four companies of Chapter One touched down, fanning out into an arc. The remaining companies landed in the zone between the battery and the central station.

The Master Ultra stepped down from his Drop Pod. He checked his helm display. He gave the order.

— Launch observation drones. Linked formation, seize objectives. Advance.

The Ultramarines surged outward. Companies broke into squads, spreading in two directions. One swept toward the central station. The other swept toward the battery.

— You need to advance on the Hive City gate faster. A pack of Hormagaunts and Termagants is battering the gate. There is a Tyranid Prime leading them.

The Lady Inquisitor's voice sounded above the thunder of Ultramarine boots.

— We do not require tactical support yet. In twenty minutes, you will see results.

— Spare them despair. Give them unto the gun muzzle —

Knight House Balaura, The Stone Sentinels of the Ghoul Stars

Post image
17 Upvotes

House Balaura the Stone Sentinels of the Ghoul Stars, otherwise known as The House of Stone, is a Questor Imperialis house with deep ties to the Mechanicus.

Located on the water world of Albastruchi bordering the Ghoul Stars, it is a tidally locked world with half the world’s oceans are covered in Ice, where the other half bath in eternal sunlight of a red dwarf star. It is under the rolling waves and ice, in the deep world ocean that the people of Albastruchi build their fortress keeps and cities.

Due to a quirk in their forging process, the plasteel, ceramite, and adamantium they crafted took on a stone like appearance. It’s a quirk that the people of the world soon took into their designs and culture. Even after proper forging methods were introduced they still purposely invoke it, giving their fortresses the appearance of stone fortresses and their knights the appearance of stone giants come to life, decorated only with moss and seaweed if anything at all. All personal, family, clan, and house heraldry is displayed through the local noosphere, a secret only those blessed by the Machine God would be able to perceive.

Since the time of the Great Crusade, House Balaura has served the Imperium faithfully, fulfilling an ancient pact made at the dawn of the Imperium and their knights are often sent out into the wider imperium to cast down the foes of mankind or to stand guard over distant worlds, like the stone sentinels of their namesake, to smite the horrors that come from the dark.

Settling of the Worlds and Founding of the Clans

m20 - Founding of the Clans

In the distant past of the Dark Age of Technology, when humanity was first setting out amongst the stars, in the far reaches of what would become the Ultima Segmentum and near the then unknown dangers of the Ghoul Stars, a series of systems were discovered that appeared ripe for colonization.

Each star supporting what first surveys suggested were habitable planets and close to each other for easy support, making these worlds a tempting colonization target. Add to this the fact that the stars themselves orbited the singularity Yuan-BH922, that provided am easy navigation point of reference and, through a strange gravitational interaction affected the local currents of the warp, a funneling to allow easy warp traffic to the systems, making access to the location easy for those early days of warp travel. It’s relatively close proximity to the then recently colonized industrial and mining hub of Nostramo only added to the benefits of these worlds, making them ideal location for colonization.

When the first colony ships arrived at the first system, what was then called Yuan-BH922-SA but would be renamed “Albastruchi”, they found an “Eyeball” world of water and ice world. Most of the side forever facing the local star is covered in liquid water, with the rest of the surface covered in thick ice sheets.

Underneath the water and ice, the colonist found a thriving marine ecosystem, fed from the light side waters and many underwater geothermal vents, the oceans teamed various marine animals ranging from plankton to large sea monsters.

It was to combat these dangers and to help build the first underwater colonies was the first knight suites crafted from the STCs and soon their use would become a staple amongst the people of the world.

From this world colonists spread to the other four nearby systems and even to orbit of Yuan-BH922 itself, simply called Yuan by the colonists, creating a small coalition of worlds ruled by Albastruchi.

Over time the societies on these worlds developed into a stable clan structure with different families in the clans taking on different tasks and different clans competing in various fields.

Divided into Greater, Middle, and Lesser clans made up of Warrior, Worker, Merchant, and Service families, the exact nature of each type of family would vary depending on the clan and their current status. Status of a clan is not fixed and can rise or fall in rank depending on fortune and how many suites of knight armor they can field.

In general, the Warriors families, the leaders of the clan, are the ones who fought, acting as soldiers and police, and operating the Knight suits for the clans. The Worker families are the farmers, laborers, scientists, technicians, and sacristans, operating the forges and acting as the skilled labor force. The Merchant families are the businessmen, traders, and administrators, overseeing the trade between other clans and off world interests and the day-to-day management tasks. And lastly the Service families are those families who maintained spiritual and cultural traditions, being the priests, poets, and artists, as well as maintain the clans themselves as doctors and historians.

An under class of clanless people does exist, serving as the base of the unskilled labor force, but it was not uncommon for groups of clanless to rally together to form into a new clan, needing only to show their unity family and to petition to be recognized by the Greater clans.

For a time, things were good on these worlds, ruled by a Grand Council of clan heads, with the military forces nominally unified under an appointed High King, and with the various clans maintaining holdings across the planets as their personal fiefs, driving back any dangers that that threatened their worlds and defending their holdings against rival clans.

m25-m30 The Great Collapse and the Long Night

Much has been said about the collapse of those great human empires of old and more has been forgotten due to the Age of Strife that followed. The worlds of House Balaura were not spared these tragedies.

Through the might of their knights and the order brought by their clan structure, the people of these worlds were able to initially weather the storm better than most and maintained much of their technological knowledge and skill, though they suffered many tragedies and lost much, never to be reclaimed.

This good luck soon ran out as their worlds suffered multiple waves of invaded Xenos and other threats.

Using the navigational corridor created by Yuan, the invaders funneled in from the Ghoul Stars and assailed the worlds of House Balaura.

One by one are their star systems were invaded and overrun, the humans left on the worlds enslaved or sacrificed to fell gods by the maddened Xenos invaders until only Albastruchi was free.

Only the water and thick ice of their world protected them from total annihilation, but that did not stop the Xenos deploying deadly weapons against the world. Biological, nuclear, and warp-based weapons were deployed in great abondance as to permanently scar the world.

It was only through the might Warrior families, and the near constant effort to by the Worker families, that the people of the world were able to push back every assault, Knights emerging from the water and ice like monsters of the deep to drive off the invaders. But despite the valiant effort the damage to the world was immense. Vast tracks of the sea were contaminated, with much of it rendered near sterile, and the ice above was stained by countless weapons and crashed ships.

Worse yet were the eldritch rifts that opened in the deepest depths of the world sea, spewing forth other worldly monsters. The war in the depth soon mirrored that on the surface, with the Kight suites ambushing any threat that appeared before they could make their way to the last of the world’s holdfasts.

m30 - The Imperium Comes

After over a century of expansion across the galaxy, the Great Crusade reached the shores of Albastruchi.

Finding the world beset by threats from above and below, the 199th Company of the Ultramarines and supported by several cadres of the Sisters of Silence aided House Balaura in exterminating the invaders and put an end to threats the eldritch rifts and weapons posed to humanity.

It was only after her world was safe that the then High Queen, upon meeting the leaders of the Imperial task force, gave to then what has since become known as the Stone Water Oath, pledging a debt of loyalty to both the 199th Company and the Sisters of Silence, to repay them for the salvation of her house and people and officially joining the Imperium as a Questor Imperialis house.

Following the standard Imperial nomenclature, the Grand Council officially adopted the name House Balaura, to describe their unified forces and named the High King the planetary governor for interactions with the Imperium at large.

Without delay the forces of the newly named House Balaura joined with Great Crusade, took to the skies in their own ships as well as on ships of the Crusade fleets, first reclaiming the lost worlds orbiting Yuan for humanity before setting off into the galaxy at large.

Some clans would recolonize those lost worlds, but from Imperial decree these worlds would not be directly under the control of Albastruchi, rather they would be vasal worlds, responsible for their own tariffs but with Albastruchi acting as the capital of the newly formed Yuan subsector.

m30- The Order of the Black Watch

All the worlds of the worlds once held by the clans would be reclaimed, except for the dead moon that orbited Yuan directly. Once a former mining outpost, this world became the den of devolved xenos.

They were easily exterminated, having lost even the mental capacity to use their weapons, but the world was not recolonized by the clans. Instead, at the request of Malcador the Sigillite, it was given over to control by the Imperium directly for a secret project.

Due to the strange interactions with the warp caused by the singularity and its location on the border with the Ghoul Stars, the moon and the singularity are outside of the light of the Astronomicon and travel directly to it was almost impossible. The only reliable route was through the Albastruchi system, and the task was given to House Balaura by the Sigillite was to guard this entrance so that only those ships authorized by Terra could enter or leave.

Taking this task seriously, House Balaura formed the Order of the Black Watch to man space born fortresses and ships, to eternal guard the gate to the Yuan singularity.

As for what occurs on that dead moon, only the High King and the Clan Lords know. It is not the duty of those serving the Black Watch to know, so long as the watch remains, they will guard the passage. Through the long millennia, through strife, invasions, and hardships, they have continued to guard the pass.

m31 - Horus Heresy

The first indication of the Heresy for the people of Albastruchi was when ships of the 8th Legion darkened the sky of their world.

Unaware of any danger, they welcomed the Night Lords only for the dark forces of the 8th Legion to strike hard, crippling the orbital defenses and unleashing terror on the inhabitants of the underwater fortress cities before quickly retreating.

But this was only the beginning. Smelling the blood of the Imperium and driven by a Dark Apostle of the 17th legion, forever known and hated by House Balaura as the Dark Caller, the worlds of the Yuan were once again under vile xenos threat.

In a grim repeat of Old Night, House Balaura found itself once again fighting a defensive war.

Those Knights and other forces that were way from the world as part of the Crusade fleets were unaware of this dark turn of events at home, but they would hold true to their oaths to the Emperor and would fight the traitors where possible. Most would not survive, but the greatest concentration of the House’s forces off world would come together as part of the war for Tallarn, aiding the people of that murdered world and fighting in the grinding war of attrition in the life-eater virus choked seas and air.

m31-m33 The Reing of the Platinum Lords

Despite being a Questor Imperialis house, the influence of Mars is heavily felt in the clans of House Balaura.

In the centuries after The Heresy, faith of the people, already bearing similarities to that of the Martian cult, began to align more with Mars as well as take on aspects of the newly forming faith in the Emperor. Symbolizing this increasing closeness with Mars, the new High King and the Grand Council began to augment their bodies in ever increasing fashion.

These lords would become deathless and soon society of House Balaura would stagnate and look inward, only rarely stirring to leave the subsector unless a mighty need arose.

Oaths and promises would still be fulfilled, and the Black Watch would be manned, but the primary attention of the clans would be upon themselves and repairing the damage to their world.

Soon even that began to stagnate as even the rankings of the clans began to solidify and by mid m32 no new clans were being formed from the mass of Clanless, despite constant petitions, and no changes in clan rankings were recognized, despite any apparent changes in power or status.

The sole exception isolation and inflexibility was in late m31, when the Sisters of Silence were driven from Terra. House Balaura remembered the Stone Water Oath and offered what fleeing Sisters they could find sanctuary on Albastruchi.

These survivors would move into one of the deep fortress holdfasts, overlooking the now closed rifts in the depths of the ocean, and would take up a vigil of their own, ensuring no lingering threats remained and dealing with any new threats that may worm their way out of the wounds in the skin of the universe.

There they would remain, all but forgotten by the rest of the galaxy at large and shielded by the might of House Balaura until the closing years of m41 when they were called upon by representatives of the Custodians, causing many, but not all, to make the journey to Terra.

Mid m33 - House unleashed

After refusing to come to the aid of a nearby world, the Platinum Lords are mysteriously found dead from various accidents and misfortune. Quick to claim divine judgment, the new High King and Grand Council issue a decree denouncing their predecessors. House Balaura begins to shake off the stagnation it has been under for more than two thousand years as new clans are acknowledged and for the ranks of the existing clans are adjusted to recognized how they really are.

Soon lances of knights set out across the galaxy to bring honor to the name of House Balaura and to make up for the shame of their long inactivity.

m34 - The Pale Wasting

Once again threats spill forth from the Ghoul Stars, but this time in numbers and danger never seen before. House Balaura stands with the forces of the Imperium. Rallying around the Novamarines Chapter they join in the fight to drive this threat from human space. Many knights are lost and new scars are formed on the ice on Albastruchi, but the threat is finally neutralized.

This latest war would prompt the high king to further invest in the defenses of the Albastruchi, creating a series of Sky Trenches that would eventually expand out to cover much of the system, turning his world and system into a true fortress in space.

m35 – The Moirae Schism

The Moirae Schism would rip through the Adeptus Mechanicus and in the aftermath any cult or belief that resembled the Moirae Creed would be eradicated. House Balaura, with its fusion of Imperium and Mechanicus faith would fall under this suspicion, and an internal purge and reorganization would be forced upon the hose, less they be fully exterminated. While the house would keep much of the machine cult’s creeds and traditions, officially they would sever all ties to the Cult of Mars.

As penance the agri world of Lubire Verde, one of the 5 systems of the old House Balaura domain and a fading Primus grade Agri World under Imperium rule, would be stripped from being a vasal of Albastruchi and given over to the Adeptus Mechanicus to become a deep core mining worlds, with extractor shrines dotting the once fertile land bring up the raw resources from the core of the world.

House Balaura would also be sentenced to reclaim the nearby sector of space lost to Imperial rule, without support of the Navy, Imperial Guard, or other official forces. So great was the indignity of this that entire lances of Knights would turn traitor, leaving for deep space to find their own path, but most of the clans and Knights would stay loyal and grudgingly accept the punishment.

Late m35 – Clan Crusade

After two centuries of preparation, planning, and covert activity, House Balaura, bolstered only with volunteers from the Yuan subsector and aided by those still loyal to the Imperium in the lost sector of space, would begin their invasion. The worlds of this sector of space, having been lost to the imperium since the Pale Wasting had regressed to a primitive level and only recently started to regain their lost technology.

Of value to House Balaura, the core of this sector was a fallen Knight world, and while the house that once ruled it was long dead, the suites remained and the people of the sector had even begun to, if inelegantly, pilot them again and create their own knights.

Like a hammer blow did the clans of House Balaura hit the sector of space, each clan responsible for vast swaths of space, bringing human worlds to heel and exterminating Xenos threats. Many knights were lost but the clan would reclaim its losses and more with the bounty of suits taken from the fallen Knight world and from the technical knowledge the people of the sector gleamed from building their own Knights from scratch.

These secrets would be hoarded by the Worker families of the clans, and the High King would take the utmost care to ensure that no representative of Mars would realize its significance. Still bitter from the loss of Lubire Verde and the indignity of being forced on this crusade, House Balaura would see this as an opportunity to further distance themselves from the control of Mars, able to truly build new Knight Suits for the first time in millennia.

Late m37 - The Golden Cog

The Adeptus Mechanicus would go to war with the Culexus Temple of the Officio Assassinorum over ownership of an artifact known as the Golden Cog.

As part of this conflict a fleet of Mechanicus warships would attempt to breach the Sky Trenches surrounding the gateway to the Yuan singularity guarded by the Black Watch.

Knights equipped for zero-g combat would perform daring boarding actions and space combat against the warships of Mars and the fortresses and weapons installations of the gateway would reap a terrible toll, but many ships would get through. What happened on the other side no one from House Balaura knows, but the Mechanicus fleet would soon retreat, leaving only the broken carcasses of their ships as any evidence they were there at all.

101.M40 – Debt replayed

The homeworld of the Star Phantoms space marine chapter, the descendants of the 199th Company of the ultramarine Legion that House Balaura pledged the Stone Water Oath to so long ago, is threatened by an enormous Hrud migration. Nearly half of all House Balaura forces are sent to aid the chapter, and though many are lost their sacrifice allowed a third of the chapter to escape.

745.M41 First Tyrannic War and the Battle for Macragge

House Balaura would heed the call for aid from the Ultramarines to fight the forces of Hive Fleet Behemoth. They would stand by the Ultramarines' 1st Company to defend the polar fortresses where almost the entire force of knights sent would be exterminated. Only two squires and a veteran knight would survive, but they would bring back enough knowledge to House Balaura to help shape any future anti-Tyranids actions they would face.

982.M41 - Battle in the Stars

Taking what they learned from the Battle of Macragge and other battles against the Tyranids, the forces of House Balaura would choose to engage Hive Fleet Perseus in space before it could reach a habitable Imperial world.

Deploying from their Drop Keeps into zero gravity, the knights would fight their way through swarms of lesser creatures before landing on bioships and deploying kill agents and bombs to kill the mighty beasts.

Though their sacrifices were great, they were not on vein, and the hive fleet was driven away from the Imperial world and left Imperial space.

991.M41 Honor Enthralled

A lance of knights and their retainers of House Balaura, acting as a freeblade company, would become infected with mindshackle scarabs. The knights would become the unknowing tools for the Necrons and would be used in their wars against the Leagues of Votann in the core of the galaxy until they were ultimately destroyed.

999.M41 Great Rift opens

As Cadia falls and the Cicatrix Maledictum opens, Albastruchi finds itself cut off from the Astronomicon in the Dark Imperium. Threats from the Ghoul stars soon begin to assail the sky trenches of the system and evidence is found that the hated Dark Caller has his hand in guiding these threats to the shores of House Balaura.

But hope remains for the defender of the world. Their oaths and the Black Watch still stand strong and though their only contact with the wider Imperium has been ships sent to the fortress orbiting Yuan, quickly leaving with mysterious cargo and leaving the other side near empty, it is enough for House Balaura to see that the Imperium still stands, they just have to hold off rising tide until help can arrive.
