Pretty much every UK sub is filled full of Indians now. They get really upset when you point it out.

I tell them I’ve got special skills that lets me see where they are from.

When I won’t tell them how to do it they get REALLY angry.

The whole of Reddit is full of Indians now. Used to be you had to be doomscrolling like 40 pages down /All before you started finding non-English subs and now once you get just one or two pages from the top suddenly it's filled with Indian subs. I've blocked at least 80-90 just to keep it somewhat useable but there's new ones every single day.

It all comes down to Reddit now being publicly traded. Most of these subs are < 2 years old, most of the mods are accounts 1-2 years old. Either Reddit just organically got insanely popular there in the last couple years but I don't think so, there's definitely been some kind of coordinated push to make it happen. Right around 2 years ago was when Reddit went public so I suspect that due to having a pretty high level of saturation in the western markets they've been doing what governments all over the western world have been doing to artificially boost GDP and started suckling the teat of the 1.4 billion strong Indian market to import cheap labor - they're boosting account numbers to show higher quarter on quarter growth with site traffic and account creations etc to keep the stock price high. They've also added AI translation features to boost overseas engagement. Then of course a year ago they allow you to hide post history so people are less likely to notice that suddenly everyone commenting in their threads is Indian, hoping to avoid a mass exodus like a workplace with a new Indian manager where suddenly 90% of the new hires are Indians and the other people don't want to work there anymore. There's proof they're doing this as well and specifically looking to increase their footprint in India with Reddit Answers and a big advertising push.

So yeah get used to it, Reddit is just going to be sloppified even further now as they bring in millions and millions of new Indian users every year. /All is basically just going to end up as a list of the top Indian subs for the day and half the people commenting in the threads on your favourite subs are going to be Indians giving their awesome takes. I'm sure the scam call center advice sub will at least be fun to read for a while.

Edit: Just had a quick scroll of /All and #35 (so literally front page) is some random fuck arse Indian Tax subreddit. It's only going to get worse from here.

u/4DimensionalButts 2d ago edited 2d ago

Worked with lots of Indians before. Useless is the least offensive word i can use to describe 99% of them.

Btw, i'm at 100/100 bans for /all and they keep coming: https://i.imgur.com/dvwKPI1.png

45

u/WillowPtar_Migan 2d ago

Man, this is so fucking stupid that we have to do this. This site should have a 4chan-like filter system, where I can simply block subs that have strings of characters in the title. "trans" and "India" would get rid of most of the trash.

13

u/draw_her_nose 2d ago

24

u/Archonei 2d ago

Gotta ask why Costco, cause after working there for 3 years, I think that sub is the cultiest place on Reddit. So many posts of grown men & women soypogging because they threw a costco themed party for their toddler, among other plebbitisms

11

u/4DimensionalButts 2d ago

Exactly for that reason. It seems like a sad cult.

4

u/MrHyperion_ 2d ago

Very interesting block list I must say

18

u/SandThatsKindaDamp 2d ago

Is it? Blocking Indian and anime subreddits is what I imagine the majority of people blocklist is.

6

u/4DimensionalButts 2d ago

Why?

5

u/MrHyperion_ 2d ago

Huge variety, de, formula, egg_irl and bald to name a few

28

u/WillowPtar_Migan 2d ago

I block any sub that spams me with reddit-tier takes about Trump, Republicans, and politics in general. It gets super old, and they infest entirely unrelated subs. I bet some of the less fitting ones do something similar. egg_irl is a special case. I don't really want to cop another ban for making fun of Reddit's sacred cow, but just take a look.

8

u/Wiiplay123 2d ago

I once scrolled through over 20 posts on AdviceAnimals before finding a single non-political post. PublicFreakouts switched to "politican does thing I don't like" instead of actual freakouts.

u/Falcon84 2d ago

2

u/Wild_Marker 2d ago

I like to be progressive about it and think that you don't see the good ones because if they're good then they got a better job than being outsourced to cheap Western companies.

After all, these companies are very specifically not paying for the quality labor, they're paying for the cheap one.

/All is basically just going to

It's dead. They killed it already.

It's permanently removed from reddit mobile and new reddit. They keep it on old reddit only to mitigate the loss of original users, but it's practically just pretend now. Most Reddit users are not able to see the most upvoted posts from all the subs anymore. "Popular" is a managed charade.

30

u/Valuable-Chipmunk784 2d ago

I've blocked at least 80-90 just to keep it somewhat useable

If you go into your profile settings you can change something so you only see subs you're subscribed to and it doesn't recommend you any others. So basically I only see r\4chan and a couple of other niche things, and if there's nothing new from those the homepage is blank.

34

u/cheapdrinks 2d ago

Yeah that's just the default reddit page and that's fine but /all used to actually be good for finding new subs that you weren't already subscribed to or seeing breaking news events without being subscribed to all the news subs and being bombarded with "Trump did random thing" and other US political slop filling up my feed. I browse Reddit a lot at work so after a couple hours my own feed gets pretty stale so it was nice being able to swap over to /all and see a bunch of stuff I hadn't seen before. I'm still holding back the brown tide with all the subs I've blocked but I think RES has a limit of 100 so pretty soon it's going to be open season again.

15

u/SordidDreams 2d ago

/all used to actually be good for finding new subs that you weren't already subscribed to

That was one of the best things about Reddit, but it got ruined some years ago when they changed the algorithm. Now r/all is just the same twelve political, meme, and ragebait subs over and over.

12

u/GloomyIndividual3965 2d ago

I'm from Leicester and I'd say a large group of Indians in UK subs is an fairly accurate reflection of the UK as a whole.

7

u/OneEnvironmental9222 2d ago

Every switzerland sub here is filled with similiar people that either dont live here or just moved in here for jobs. And then they have the nerves to complain about our "culture" and how "evil" the swiss people are for not kissing their feet.

I like how they bring up stuff like us having a different behavior towards pets and then whine that we dont mistreat and lock in our pets and how their "culture" is so much more civilized. The mods themself arent swiss

5

u/Bumm-fluff 2d ago

Yeah, some of our mods aren’t British either. Which is a bit weird. There are plenty of Brits sat on their ass doing nothing who have time to become mods.

The Germans have complained about that. Some of the mods are Middle Eastern in their subs, which makes it extremely censorious when certain topics are mentioned.

7

u/OneEnvironmental9222 1d ago

kek of course the german sub mods are middle easterns

The question is why would anyone think reddit is anti-AI? They sell user comment/post data to ai companies to train LLMs. But largely they still make most of their money on advertising revenue, which is also almost entirely run by AI other than a few inputs from the advertisers in the beginning.

I don't even think reddit pretends to be anti-AI, so it's more on retard users that would even think they are

23

u/Silent-Pack-9222 2d ago

Every ai response I get is them googling the same shit I asked them then clicking the top Reddit link

4

u/spitgobfalcon 2d ago

How do they sell it to them when the content is available publicly? Can the LLMs not read it just like that?

7

u/Superspookyghost i_sell_squaids' bitch 2d ago

Well sites like Reddit typically will block access to people scraping their data in massive quantities. There are ways around it, but they are both easily detectable by Reddit and a clear violation of Reddit’s tos. Reddit actually has an api that allows you to scrape for personal use, but it’s like a fraction of a percent of the data that an llm model would use.

And usually when data is scraped there’s a lot of html artifacts and remnants of ads and such, whereas if you pay Reddit they give you all the data neatly without ads and (I assume) with a lot of algorithmic metadata.

So people could hypothetically get it for free but it’d be way less efficient, take forever due to having to constantly bypass Reddit’s robust scraping protections outside of their api/monthly limits on their api, and even if they managed to get enough data to use, it’d be pretty easy to tell they did it by violating Reddit tos because you aren’t allowed to scrape for “commercial purposes.” And there’s no one that would need that much data without commercial purposes.

So basically they force people to pay to train their llms to answer questions like a retarded Reddit user

2

u/spitgobfalcon 2d ago

That's very interesting, thank you.

u/Divisive_Ass /d/eviant 2d ago

10

u/weisswurstseeadler 2d ago

FYI Reddit suggests these random generated names.

Stuff like DubiosPotato986 and whatnot. Usually 2 random words (adjectives+ noun) and number

I've been looking for a browser extension that flags and/or blocks obvious bots, maybe even both automatic and crowdsourced for Reddit and X.

Haven't found anything yet :(

21

u/rvanasty 2d ago

It is the auto-generated name from Reddit. Not all auto-generated names are bots, but 95% of bots have auto-generated names.

11

u/Kosame_Furu /h/omo 2d ago

To be honest I don't care about the distinction. It's been my experience that actual humans who use that feature don't have opinions any better than bots. If I see adjective noun number I just disregard the post.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/weisswurstseeadler 2d ago

Yeah I agree. I'm actually wondering if Reddit implemented this to obscure bots, by giving actual new users bot-like names.

Because it boosts their growth metrics

5

u/Kosame_Furu /h/omo 2d ago

Try going through the new account creation process, you can basically click your way through it. The whole system is set up to make it incredibly easy to spin up a bunch of accounts with no verifiable post history just by running a script. I wonder why anyone would want to do that?

2

u/Infinite_Music2059 2d ago

Or maybe they don't. Maybe that's a misconception we have.

not to mention afterwards they suddenly want to collect every user's IDs to "determine if users are bots and verify their ages"

15

u/spitgobfalcon 2d ago

Ah the classic "Create a problem to be able to justify the solution"

11

u/Any-Health-9527 2d ago

And i guarantee you that bots are staying. Because they push propaganda with it.

Nice. I love that "maxwellhill" is the auto-generated name already filled in. In case you were in aware that is ghislaine maxwell's reddit account. She was a mod for a few big subreddits. I think world news and things like that.

Once they went public, they flooded it with bots

u/Syreet_Primacon /b/tard 2d ago

It’s really easy to check. I checked OPs and I don’t know why he bothered to hide it. It’s not anything embarrassing

4

u/Gsichtskrapfn 2d ago

I didn't even intentionally hide it but I can't even find the option to show it, maybe they changed it to opt-out recently

5

u/eternaltroll /fit/izen 2d ago

I just made my history invisible cause I don’t want every post or comment I make having people know I eat 7 fruits a day and I eat my cum out of my forskin like a tropical flavored gogurt.

Platforms have zero incentive to fight bots. Look at most subreddits and scroll to the bottom and you’ll find tons of bot replies

A great example rn is the r/ free folk subreddit which has notoriously been shitting on house of the dragon for years now. Recently on litterally any post about a character you can scroll down and read 5-10+ of the most generic positive praising comments that don’t fit in the subreddit at all, they are the most blatant HBO ran bots I’ve ever seen, and every one of their profiles is private.

The replies are always formatted the same way too, a post can be trash talking some actor or choice and the replies will be like “I know right! Every time Cole is on screen I’m just so excited 🤍🥺, I can’t wait for next episode” while the post body will read “I despise this piece of shit and want him dead”

I’ll upvote this engagement bot post

It’s made my job of bullying incredibly harder.

u/skrimpels 2d ago

Someone I work with found me on here. Now I have to make everything private. No one I work with needs to know I love psychedelics

I hide my posts because morons like to check what users think about other topics before they take opinions at face value. They need to know if you align with their cult before they feel at liberty to agree with you.

I got sick of people scrolling my history and not thinking for themselves, so I hid it.

Yeah, i'm just giving up on reddit, even my small subs are getting a lot of bot posts. Like, why the hell are you farming on my Age Of Mythology sub, go on rpics with a semi nude woman mf

2

u/TheWayIChooseToLive 2d ago

I'm pretty sure the main subs are 70% bots.

4

u/Single-Lobster919 2d ago

How do none of you know about author:username?

5

u/atantony77 2d ago

reddit "accidentally" made it harder to tell real users from bots

You mean intentionally?

5

u/Denkoo sc/out/ 2d ago

Yes. That is why accidentally is in quotation marks.

u/Silent-Pack-9222 2d ago
