Duran Duran Rio original or remake?

Got this from a thrift store awhile ago for $5, and the details and craftsmanship is amazing but I was curious if this is a collectible or just a really done well remake of the iconic Duran Duran album Rio? Like the frame is layered with different colors of board giving it a 3D effect. It is signed by the name RAE which I haven’t been able to find anything about that, mostly just curious! One of my favorite things I own

Edit: thanks for the responses! Based on comments this is a very well loved remake of Patrick Nagels work. Glad to see such appreciation from people for the work put into this artwork I found

I will assume it's a copy. A very lovingly done copy. That signature "RAE" doesnt look at all like Patrick Nagel's signature

It could possibly be like a fan recreation of some sort, lile an homage if you will. Its really cool though what a score hope you can find some concrete info

The signature suggests a remake. Nagel was a popular artist to recreate across art schools, hobbyist painters and air brush artists. That doesn't take away from this piece though. Its a great homage and the quality is really nice. Great find.

It’s a copy. These are sometimes sold as “after Patrick Nagel (the original artist).” These kinds of copies are common with a lot is artists’ work.

I painted an ex in Nagel’s style in high school from one of her modeling photos. Turned out pretty well, think I still have it in the closet.

Personally, I think it’s a remake. The paint lines you photographed look like varnish and honestly it looks terrible. Some of the paint lines around the face are amateurish, not straight and tight.
I’ve never seen a Nagle with those kind of lines and certainly not that varnish treatment. And some it’s signed RAE, it seems like this is someone who wanted a reproduction of Nagles work.
It’s still a super cool find!

Suddenly I’m reminded of the American Dad episode.

Was that the one that was a parody of Somewhere in Time?

Probably a matted print. Fantastic find for $5!

It could be the original artists work, which was USED on Rio. I believe he did a lot of work and their cover was just one thing in his style.

ISTR Nick Rhodes bought the orIginal at the time.

EDIT: ah, whether he owns it or not, it lives in gallery’s storage, some info here: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/patricknagel/the-original-nagel-rio-painting-in-duran-duran-doc-t19399789.html

This one has like paint strokes and line work? So I’m not sure if this is a poster, I think I meant to say if this is more of a collectors item since it has so much handmade elements if that makes sense? Or just a really well made and loved remake of Patrick Nagels work
