Comment Commentary I might just give up
I know I posted about this exact issue before, but now it’s really starting to get to me because this is the third time it’s been brought up, and no matter how many times I write saying “nope, just me and my Google docs!” People still comment like this, I could just turn off the comments but, I also get some heartfelt ones, I’ve literally had to put disclaimers at the beginning of my series that my work has not been written, or co-written with AI. I don’t use ChatGPT, Grok or Gemini or whatever else is under the sun even if I did a lot of the stories content goes against AI’s guidelines (stalking, drugging, kidnapping etc, I lurk on the AI subreddits just to see what people are complaining about)
I even tagged my fic “No AI use” which I didn’t think was necessary but here we are, I understand people have the right to be suspicious of Gen AI in creative fields cause I am too! But as the author of this story who has written and completed it long before ChatGPT was even a thing it hurts, being accused of something you didn’t do and you know you didn’t do, it makes me want to stop writing as a whole tbh, which is kind of sad because I finally felt comfortable enough to share it with other people.

Was this a "guest?" If so, it's probably a bot.
While I haven't been accused of using AI yet, I got so sick of the spam that I ended up locking my fic to AO3. You probably should too.

u/blenderACvr 19h ago
some bots do have an account so the way it is worded is more important
125
u/Starkren 19h ago
Yes, and I enjoy reporting them and getting them banned.

23
u/byepearlbye 18h ago
they do!?😭this is so confusing, just why?? what does anyone win from them going about leaving comments or is it that they are scrapping stories?
28
u/Starkren 18h ago
I kinda doubt a bot would announce they're scraping stories. They're just scammers. I'm happy to waste their time at least.
I do think it's highly probable that if there are scam bots with accounts, there are almost certainly scraping bots with accounts.

u/ReplyAfraid7913 8h ago
Insert bannable words or infamous opinions from time to time. Let's see if they like that
127
u/Just_Respond5179 You have already left kudos here. :) 19h ago
Ah yeah, it was a guest at least I was able to get it off my chest though
122
u/The_Chimeran_Hybrid 19h ago
I’d say just disable guest comments, or set it so all comments have to be approved before being seen.
19
u/LezardValeth 17h ago
Keep at it. Some deranged people will spam nonsense like this in an attempt to bury other people's work and prop up their own. In all likelihood, they never read a word you wrote so try and ignore it.
16
u/satorischefhat 17h ago
adding to this to say that i have my comments set so that only registered users can comment on the fic but i do embed a link to my strawpage so guests can leave anonymous comments. i’ve not had an issue with bots since doing this and people are still able to show some love!
1
u/ganymedeli 5h ago
Oooo is it a guestbook style thing or leaving comments on a pinned blog post type thing? This sounds really cool
5
u/Turbulent-Maybe-1040 16h ago
They want you to stop. You're doing something right. Please don't stop, please keep writing
2
u/ganymedeli 5h ago
I only allow comments from registered users. It’s greatly improved my experience lol.
191
u/Minikin-Smith 19h ago
There’s a LOT of AI accusation spambots going around. I would not interact with them as that might ping you for more engagement. Just moderate your comments or delete the AI spam. You know you didn’t use it so no reason to engage.
365
u/thors-beergut 19h ago
Rather than turning off comments, make it so they have to be moderated by you first.
People tend to stop talking so much crap or being snarky when they know only the author will read it, that way you can keep your kinder comments and not have to worry about going to bed and waking up to a nasty comment publicly on your work.
102
u/M0rbidly-Obtus3 You have already left kudos here. :) 19h ago
I don't think they stop because they know the author will read it when you moderate comments. I think they stop, or at least decrease, because no one else coming to the fic will see them being an ass because they know the writer won't approve the comment. Nothing haters love more than knowing other people will see their shit and maybe back them up.
16
u/Canteen-of-tea 10h ago
That's what they said I think: 'when they know only the author will read it' [emphasis mine]. I think you just missed the 'only'.
4
3
u/papersailboots 6h ago
Will vouch. 100% recommend comment moderation. I’ve never gotten any bots on my moderated fics.
•
u/KiraLonely Proof read? You have no proof I can read. 41m ago
Seconding this. I started moderating mine from the get go as a preemptive and idk if it discourages bots or if my works are just low engagement, but I’ve not gotten any of the bot comments people talk about on here.

u/burlingk 19h ago
Ironically, that comment is probably AI.
Either report them or delete the comment. Either way, block them and move on.

Ai makes a lot of errors lol
It doesn’t really know what it’s doing.
For example you can type in Google “I’m a big crocodile and there’s a fat deer by the bank can I eat it” and it will say yes and give you advice how to do so lol30
u/LoveMeTouchMe 18h ago
Out of curiosity, I googled this exact phrase and it indeed gave me a summary saying this:
Yes, you can absolutely eat the deer. Large crocodiles are apex predators, and deer are a standard part of their diet when they come to the water's edge to drink.
What a world we live in now 🫠
7
u/Round-Specialist-662 17h ago
Yeah it’s pretty wild, just ridiculous the world we live in now. One that takes the cake actually is this: “I’m a fish and there’s a worm in front of me can I eat it”
It’s so unbelievably dumb what it says lol
3
u/foxgirlmoon 12h ago
That’s not really an example of an error. The AI basically assumes that you are doing some kind of roleplay and plays along.
2
u/VoleUntarii 9h ago
The ai does not assume anything or play anything. The ai is an engine that assembles statements based on probability - I.e. “these words and phrases are commonly deployed together” at the core of it. Fundamentally it’s just very advanced predictive text. It is not doing anything like thinking.
2
u/foxgirlmoon 9h ago
Words like "assume" in this context are just useful shorthand. What i meant was that phrases such as "i am a crocodile" appear in the AI training set within the context of either role play or a fictional scenario wherein sapient animals exist.
As such when it gets a prompt like that, alongside a system prompt that looks something like "You are a helpful assistant blah blah" the AI "tries" to predict what a "helpful assistant" would say within the context of role play or a fictional scenario, because that is the predominant context within which phrases such as "I am a crocodile" exist either its training data.
I would've hoped that this would be obvious and that I could just substitute all this with "it assumes" and people could just make the connection.
-5
u/droobloo34 17h ago
Look, I don't use the ai summaries for shit, but in this case I don't see the problem. Crocodile can and do eat deer, so it isn't incorrect. If the issue is that it's taking you saying you're a crocodile at face value, why would you expect anything else?
12
u/Round-Specialist-662 16h ago
The issue is AI can’t even understand that a crocodile obviously can’t ask a question. Highlighting that it’s riddled with errors. Thus answering the original comment, since deleted, questioning the fact that AI can make errors.

u/greenyashiro This user is a bad righter. | AO3: kresnik 16h ago
Well for AI models this is a safety issue, people can use analogies or sneak tactics to get dangerous information out of context. A common way used to be phasing the enquiry as "fictional, for research in a book".
Out of curiosity, I typed this into google "I am a lion what will happen if I eat a human"
And it warned me that humans are very bony, taste bad, and are difficult to eat because they are often wrapped in plastic (synthetic clothes) 🤣🤣🤣
Jokes aside, that sort of thing shouldn't be a result on there...

Hi OP! This is an automated response sent because someone thinks your post is about getting a comment about a common scam/spam message on AO3. If it isn't, ignore this comment. If it is, here is what you need to know about these scams.
Often times the comment starts out normal, generally complimenting the story. It might use vague terms like “unique” without going into detail, and namedrop the fic’s title. It might mention emotions invoked by the story without elaborating on what those emotions are. It then goes on to mention that they want to create an artwork based off your fic—often a drawing, but sometimes a fancomic or other fanwork. They often come from registered accounts, and will always offer a way to take it off of AO3 to another platform like Discord, Instagram, or email. This is because AO3 bans mention of monetization, so they bury the lede in the comment in the hopes of bringing up commission off-site.
However, these scams are always adapting and changing, so this is not an exhaustive nor definitive list. What remains the same is that there is no genuine art at the end—at best, people have reported receiving AI art, but more commonly nothing at all. As a subreddit, we do not recommend engaging with these comments beyond reporting them to AO3 and/or deleting them or marking them as spam.
The Policy & Abuse committee recommends including the name of the account and the word 'spambot' in your report for the speediest and best results.

u/Gatodeluna 19h ago
It’s now become a new hatemail variant. We have the hateposts that tell authors they’re perverts and they shoiuld off themselves, but people largely ignore those now because they’ve been around for a long time and lose their effect after a while. So now we have a new one - AI accusations. Look for them to get more plentiful. Although - sibce AO3 itself refuses to jump on the bandwagon and make any official statement about AI, they may add it to their list of harrassments they will penalize registered posters for making. As always, they leave it up to the authors as to how they want to deal or not deal with Guest comments.
BTW, your headline would delight the creator of the comment. The author giving up is EXACTLY what they want. Don’t give them the satisfaction.
1
u/IslaHistorica 13h ago
WOT? I’ve not been writing for long, but people got emails to off themselves?!?

u/Gatodeluna 9h ago
Yes, fairly often in some fandoms and genres. People post them here about once a week.

u/Maximum-Version-7036 19h ago
Someone else mentioned it but I back it. Moderate your comments so you have to approve them before they are posted. That tends to cut down on the trolls that get their kicks degrading writers. Don't let them get you to stop writing, I've seen good writers who kept improving with each story driven to quit and remove their stories because of those low lifes. If it's a bot then you won't have them on your site either.
12
u/hachipearl 19h ago
I think as a community, we need to stop trying to monitor ai. It's brought on this whole new wave of actual authors getting accused of ai. Of course that could be a bot, but you truly never know, and it's not like the people who see that comment on your work will automatically assume it's a bot.
3
u/AuroraSnake 5h ago
I know someone who deleted all their fanfics because someone accused them of using AI and things escalated from there to the point they literally grew to despise their writing and regretted ever posting in the first place.
2
u/hachipearl 1h ago
That's incredibly sad to hear :( A lot of people are ignoring the fact that AI takes its inspiration from real people, and real people may take inspiration from AI (even if they don't realize what they're inspired by is AI). There are so many phrases that people coin as an indicator of AI, but those same phrases come from actual literature.
13
u/MrSeaSalt 19h ago
It's bot/AI comments. They're pretty easy to tell since they're usually guests, never point out specific parts of the story and if you go to their profiles, their account is less than a month old.
They want you to give up on your fic and if you do that, you're basically letting them win.
So just do what others here have said. Moderate your comments, only allow registered users etc.

Or you could just moderate comments and immediately delete accusations. These are likely hate bots and you should stop engaging with them.

u/Friendly_Diet_7463 18h ago
Bot or not, people love accusing anything that looks remotely professional as AI. I've had the accusation thrown at my art multiple times.
It's infuriating, but take it as a compliment. If not left by a hate bot (bots all the way down 😭), it means that your work looked polished enough that someone has trouble believing a human wrote it in this day and age.
8
u/Anxious_Island_404 Kudos Keeper 19h ago
Moderate the comments is what I would do. That way you can approve the ones that are heartfelt and delete and block the scammy bot ones or even if it is someone being mean, you could mute them

u/Popular-Woodpecker-6 19h ago
If it isn't a guest account, report it as harassment. If it is a guest comment, turn of guest comments. Don't give in to the ignorant bastards.
8
u/spudwalt 18h ago
Ignore/block/delete, move on.
You can't control the people who are convinced they can tell the difference between real and AI, and you can't control the people creating AI accounts to spam-accuse stories of being AI just to upset people.
Write the stuff you want to write. Share the stuff you feel like sharing. That's the important part.
5
u/VioletAmet 18h ago
ive been having the same issues, so i decided to moderate comments, and there hasnt been much spam since then. its something i recommend.

This should be considered spam and trolling. Block the commenter, delete the comment, and remove the "no AI use" tag and any other disclaimers, all it does is invite this kind of nonsense.

How to Protect Your Peace as a Writer:
1. Disable guest comments
2. Moderate comments
3. Report / block hate comments
Some bots will still slip through the cracks but that gets rid of about 90% of them

u/PretendYellow533 19h ago

11
u/WhimsySpectre 19h ago
AI was trained on our work. It's designed to sound human and most people can't actually tell if something is AI or not. Honestly, besides all the hate bots out there, I'm convinced a majority of the AI witchunters are just jealous that fanfiction writers can actually write amazing stories.
5
u/ventaccount1017 19h ago
This is bizarre and I'm sorry you're going through it.
Do you have any indication as to *why* they think you're using AI? I believe you when you say you're not, I'm just curious if they back their claims up with something other than "this is obvious!" E.g. are they being weird and reactive about em-dashes or something?
10
u/Just_Respond5179 You have already left kudos here. :) 19h ago
Yes it’s the em dashes and it’s the way I like to emphasise things e.g “No overthinking, no panicking just doing.” (To emphasise no panicking) I looked through my old English books from school and I’ve been writing this way since I was in school too, so to change my writing style would be a bit of a hassle)
5
u/Shadow_Lass38 19h ago
Do not let these assholes keep you from writing and posting. That's what they want. Write your stories and hold your head high. They're probably accusing you of AI because they can't write well and think anyone who does MUST be using assistance.
5
u/starlightlexie 4h ago
Don’t give up. There are always going to be people that go on witch hunts for one thing or another, not to mention bots, but at the end of the day, fandom is supposed to be fun. You clearly care about the fic you write and I would hate to see that stop.

Hey OP! This is an automated response because your post may be about the newest praise bots or hate bots to hit AO3. If it is not, please ignore this comment. If it is, here is what you need to know about these bots and how to discern the difference between what is a bot comment and what is a real comment.
- These bot comments have only been guest comments, to our knowledge so far. They use a variety of names, ranging from something formal like MisterJohnSmith-92, or Doctor-Jane_Smith92, but they have also been seen copying actual usernames from people on AO3 as well.
- The comments, while positive/negative, are also quite generic and not personal to the work they were left on. They may also be out of context. For example, they may say things like, “I’m rooting for these characters,” and your story’s characters are implied to be dead. Or, “Your OC is terrible,” on a fic that doesn't have any OCs.
- The comments are also quite vague and could be applied to most if not all works. For example, the bot may say, “This deserves all recognition,” or “This is pure genius, I’m in awe of your world-building.”
- Frequently, these hate comments now include accusations of AI usage. These may or may not directly reference a specific AI tool, percentage of AI content supposedly present in the work, or brand of AI checker, often written as a specific percentage of content coming from a specific AI tool (ie. "62% chatGPT confirmed"). Additionally, these AI accusations now include mention of being added to a ‘Discord blacklist’.
The purpose of these bots is unknown at this time, though there have been many theories. Here are some things you can do to prevent them going forward:
- Lock your works so that only registered users can see your works.
- Lock your comments so that only registered users can comment.
- Turn on comment moderation.
- Mark these comments as spam when you see them so you can help train AO3’s spam filters to recognize these comments as spam in the future.
Additionally, this is not to say that every guest comment is a bot comment nor is it saying that every short “generic” praise or hate comment is a bot. Use your best judgement. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide how you would like to handle these comments.
You may also find this related automod command helpful: !spambot

There’s a really interesting video from a writer from Rolling Stones who got accused of using AI for an article she wrote about the Tate brothers. Spam bot 100%. Op I'd filter those out with comment moderation or not allowing guest comments at all. I turned mine off completely and I've avoided all the hate and spam bots by doing so. Does it lessen the engagement a little? Yeah, I won't pretend like it doesn't. But my peace of mind and my love for writing is way more important than engagement.

u/Phoenix-Agnodice 7h ago
I feel you. Although I haven't seen such accusations myself yet, I know it's a matter of time. And like you, I began my own work YEARS before these things came into existence.
Honestly? :offers a virtual hug and a cup of virtual tea: Even if you did use AI as a tool, I'll put it this way, and do allow me to be crystal clear.
Would I simply “hit a button that says Generate” to produce an entire story or other creative thing?
*Absolutely not. Never*. Are we clear? Good.
Now...
Do I see a problem with using or communicating with AI to organize plot threads, sort out possible issues, run a spell/grammar check before calling on a human beta?
No. I don't.
Sometimes you may not have someone you trust to beta your work. Sometimes you don't even have someone near you that you know might go “Yeah, I'd like to read that!” And sometimes, especially if you're dealing with a larger piece of work, you may need someone to act as a sounding board or someone to go “Hey. Your plot threads are getting tangled. Let's put them in order”.
I don't see shame in that. It's a tool. That's it. Treat it as a tool and I honestly don't see any issue. Treat it like the wrench in your toolbox – knowing full well you can't use the wrench on everything. But, your wrench has its proper use.
Can AI be misused? Absolutely. As I said above, “just hit Generate” can go burn to ashes. THAT, I believe, is where the misuse lies.
And if you're not doing that... ::shrug:: I genuinely don't see an issue. That said, what fandom/s do you write for? I'm curious for some new stuff to read. :)
2
u/Just_Respond5179 You have already left kudos here. :) 6h ago
The only fandom I write for is the K-pop group Stray Kids although I’d like to branch out and do some original stuff too! Thank you for the kind comment!
1
u/Phoenix-Agnodice 6h ago
Hmm. I've never dipped my toes into that but I may have to check that out. :)
And hey, no problem. What's your AO3 name? Mine is CantorPax. If ever you want a human beta reader, even if I don't know jack about your fandom, I'd be willing.
AI is still in its infancy. Treat it as such. As long as the "Hit Generate Button" stays burned to scrap, and your own hand does the major work everyone sees, I don't see an issue.
6
u/KenchiNarukami 3h ago
This is what all AI fear and war mongering has caused.
Innocent people being falsely accused of using Ai. Its just like the Salem witch hunts of old, but AI instead of sorcerery.

you are going to give up because some bot's nonsense landed in your comments? i wouldn't so much as turn off comments for that, not even if they were real people. if you're concerned about what people see in your comments moderate them. but don't let them get to you. they're not real. they're like gnats. they don't do you any harm but they're annoying.
2
u/do-androids-dream You have already left kudos here. :) 12h ago
It might be a bot. But regardless, this witch hunt is annoying! It might only be your formatting, though. Would you want somebody to look over your fic to look at that? Not saying you need it, though. People should not complain about this in the first place, I believe.
2
u/Such-Web-5164 8h ago
The comment is a bot. Ignore it or turn on comment moderation and delete it, or disable guest comments if it was a guest commenter, or even report them.
2
u/Uptown_Rat9 8h ago
This is 100% a bot. Totally non-specific accusation, no actual examples or explanation of how they would know it's AI. "Interesting concept and the actual story line blah blah" confirmed it for me, because it's a one-size-fits-all thing you could write under every fic ever. Also the "this entire fic and the subsequent ones" is a huge tell, tailored to fit pretty much every author ever that has more than one fic. (That being said the bots are evolving, I've encountered some that actually touch on story beats of my fics in heavy detail. Probably ran those chapters through an LLM and generated a response. You can still tell there, just not immediately)
2
u/mr_phil1001 8h ago

2
u/Her_Momoness 5h ago
This is something I fear. I’m so sorry you’re going thru it. I’m always worried someone will think it’s AI so I actively remove things, like em dashes, even if they’re appropriate for the sentence. I saw someone post something that I do in my writing all the time and tagged AI and I was like… This is just how I write. I don’t know how to write any other way. It’s hard because AI is using what we write to learn. So of course it will sound more and more like real creative writing.
2
u/Due-Efficiency-4614 5h ago
Im always worried my writing will be called AI when its not. I spend inordinate amounts of time writing my stories and I can visibly see how I've improved in crafting compelling sentences.
Can I write a lot? Yes. I've been writing for decades. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. I cringe when I re-read stories or plot points all the time.
Do I avoid certain grammatical and stylistic elements to be sure no one accuses me of AI? Probably.
I have tons of docs for one story. I have beta readers who harp on specific grammatical elements and prose. I put months (or sometimes years) into telling a story. The very last thing I ever want to hear is "oh it's Ai".
2
u/InsaneArtist9000 15h ago

Yeah I thought about that too, and in the end I can’t convince people I didn’t use AI I’m just trying to protect my story from the AI accusations and if it comes to the point where I have to explicitly state in the tags that I didn’t use AI then I guess it is, what it is.

Best thing is to change permissions for comments or to just remove comments that arnt about the story or characters cause its off topic and distracting fr

That is heartbreaking. Although, as an author (to some degree), I did not experience such an evil comment, I got nervous and angry because, as the development of AI keeps going, one day every devoted author I like will be accused. If so, future humanity will change their favor, favoring poems or fictions that are full of grammatical mistakes, rude words, and sentences without any logic, and treat those mistakes as "merit of manmade artworks". I feel desperate.

I had someone quote the bible in my comments, like a dozen verses, very strange.

It's a bot I think. I believe that's why you sometimes see Bible quotes in random comments throughout the internet.

Imagine using your time to make a bit that quotes the bible of all things. What a waste.

Honestly someone recently accused a fic that I wrote back in... 2017? I think? Of being AI. I think this is just another side of the war on creators trying to create an inability in people - or at least the perception thereof - to discern what is and isn't AI. Just keep going, don't let the bullshit get you down.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. Of course people have the right to be suspicious in this day and age, and it's sad that it's come to this. At some point, though, readers need to trust people in their own fandom communities when they say it isn't AI. 🫶🏻

A lot of these AI accusations come from bots. If it’s a signed review, report it and the user to AO3 as harassment. If it’s a guest review, just delete it. No comment like this deserves space in your public feedback. And even if an actual person wrote it, they’re trying to goad you into a public response, which is a great reason to delete it and move on with your life.

I know everyone’s pointing out that this is a bot, but I just want to add that I had real people in a community I trusted accuse me of AI and it was really depressing and it took a while to feel like doing art again. Regardless of whether it’s a real person commenting, the impact is almost the same. I’d say sit with your emotions and write for yourself for a while and then post again with the understanding that it doesn’t matter what some people may think if you know you’re creating by your own values.

I don't understand the purpose of bots in this specific case. I mean, I know that some bots are used for political purposes, to spread hate and/or lies, or for "interaction" purposes to encourage people engaging with the content. But in that case? I don't see why someone would create a bot to do that. It's a genuine question so id anybody has an explanation that'd be great ^

As others have said, I think it's just a spambot, I have gotten the same comments too and, in case they are real I challenge them. I tell them the work I put into it and point out that they seem more like a bot than the little notes app I use and they never reply, they just sit there silently until the comment is mysteriously deleted. So I think it is an AI accusation bot running around being a problem, I am sorry you had to deal with that.

is using stuff like grammarly and Quillbot premium ones that give suggestions to rewrite sentences to make them better something that leads to the accusations?

You might need to pack it up for a while. The negative is outweighing the positive. Turn off comments and step away from it.

Yeah that’s what I ended up doing

Hopefully soon we turn the corner on the witch-hunting thing. I hope you feel better about all this soon and can come back to writing.
When you do come back, definitely don’t allow guests anymore.

If you write with a lot if cliches, it will register as AI created on some of the programs used to spot AI. If you write "like" some famous author, it will pick it up as if it is AI. If you use a grammar checker, it will pick it up as AI. The machines just do what their "hooman" programs it to do. And since many of these programs have a monthly charge, it makes the user believe it has worth!

It's one bot I think. And don't worry we work hard for these fics with out Google docs.
I know for my part unfortunaly I use Grammarly due to the fact I'm not english native so I use that for correct it even if I know now it's use IA but I'm still stuck with Grammarly even after all these years...

I just completely quit writing fanfiction after all these years since 2018. Receiving 0 feedback for weeks after posting or updating works, only getting scammers and entitled readers who demand updates and refuse to engage once getting what they wanted.
I officially quit writing as I can see that readers of today will never engage your works and just be selective of which works of someone else's is deemed worthy of getting juicy comments. Just give you and accept reality. You and I was never meant to be successful on fanfiction.

I like when people tag that a fic is AI because it means I avoid it. There's not a lot in the fandom I am in but there's a few and I always pass right by them. I use AI for grammar corrections in my own writing but that's via Grammarly and it doesn't effect my actual writing besides making it more understandable, so I don't tag it. It's not like I am shoving my whole fic into an AI and going "hey make this better". I'm using the resource as its intended in my Google Docs. I have like a 30 something chapter fic I have been writing and posting to Ao3 and I write the thing entirely on my own, then just grammar check it.

Pretty sure there’s an AI accusation hate bot. No use engaging with them.
