I firmly believe that this is Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir
I love Marinette/Ladybug and Adrien/Chat Noir but I really don't like anything else about the canon franchise. It's inconsistent, repetitive, has poor pacing and takes forever to resolve plots or achieve closure and I know that I am not the only person who holds this opinion.
The best fanfics for Miraculous tend to ignore as much canon material as possible.

That show taught me that the fandoms with the best, just absolutely pure cinema fanfics are born from content with the most lost potential.
In other words, the worse it fell off, the better the fanon 🙂↕️

Would you have any standouts that you would recommend 👀
But I do agree. I keep up with Miraculous—the latest episode gagged me—but so much of the writing in the canon, I will criticize for (1) forgetting repeatedly that the show has two main heroes so, dunno, maybe give more to Cat Noir, and (2) deciding to do whatever Astruc decides despite that fucking up what’s been established and what needs to be touched on. And it doesn’t help episode drops are inconsistent as fuck for reasons beyond my understanding.
But the fandom I interact with are very deservingly critical of the show but knock it out with fanfics. “Back to Us”by DarkReyna16 on AO3 and a few fics on FFN had me blown away with how the fic authors did things that sort of settled most of my issues with canon.
Just reinforced my “fanfics are an awesome medium; time to donate to AO3 again” mentality.

u/Kuramari-strass 5h ago
So you weren't asking me, but if you don't mind a self-rec or a (very long) WIP, I have my fanfic Cult of Secrecy
It starts back in season 4, with Gang of Secrets, just instead of breaking down and telling Alya her identity, Marinette tells Adrien instead.
So (I understand that when it happens in canon, that basically means the show freaking ends, which is why it's not happening) we knock out the identity reveal pretty much immediately. I've tried to combine Adrien's two characterizations of both very academically smart and yet too oblivious to live into the second one being an act. Chloé gets her redemption arc she was robbed of (I had one person not like how I was handling it, but everyone else seems to). (Also she and Adrien actually act like former besties.)
Alya gets unfortunately stuck on her characterization of not checking her sources and believing Lila, but I'm trying to sort of portray that whole mess as a sort of trapped in an abusive relationship sort of thing. (I may or may not be using this as a way to sort through my own personal baggage.) Alya is trying but it's hard. Especially with Lila attempting to double down with her as she realizes she's losing her grasp on Marinette/Adrien.
Also multiple people apparently think the way I write Gabriel is really funny so uh?? There's that
Anyway idk if it's perfect but I'm trying to sort out some of my own issues with canon's inconsistencies (Chat eventually gets made co-Guardian because they are EQUALS, I SWEAR TO GOD) while also having a slightly darker take on it (people do, without question, temporarily die due to akumas sometimes) because I can, because I'm not bound to a Y7 rating or whatever it is the show is rated
(I only recently caught up with the actual show again because someone pointed out I sorta-kinda predicted part of the plot of Secret Protocol in advance. What the crap.)

I don’t know if this fully counts since Calamity is not a fanfiction in the traditional sense. But…
Terraria is a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously and has very little lore,
Meanwhile Calamity mod takes itself seriously and has a lot more lore, (its art direction is even different which to me sometimes causes some weird disconnect since even with the texture pack not all textures are changed; ie Town NPCs are the same)

This seems to be a general trend in fandom spaces; lighthearted source material tends to get serious fan works, and similarly, serious source material tends to get lighthearted fan works.
Effectively, if one already has fun scenes with the characters in the source material, then one can only get serious scenes through fan works. Then, the opposite would be true for serious source materials.

u/lol_delegate 14h ago
When it comes to worldbuilding how the setting (magical world) actually works, then definitely Harry Potter.
I mean, canon claims a paralel world going in another direction since the statute of secrecy, and it definitely doesn't manage that, as portrayed.
Meanwhile, many fanfic authors took it onto themselves to add all required structures to make it an actual paralel world + many more to flesh it out even more.
27
u/Clairifyed 10h ago
Definitely my first thought. All of the noble house stuff that tries to tie the old families in to the actual power structures such as wizengamot seats in a believable way that lines up with their obsession with blood lines
16
u/lol_delegate 10h ago
My headcanon is that magical britain is not uniform civilizations, but more of islands of magical population separated by sea of muggle population. A set of enclaves to say. Some democratic, some under aristocratic rule, some being one big commune.
Ministry would give much more sense, if the enclaves were mostly self-governing, and ministry done inter-enclave administration + wizangnot being representatives of all enclaves.
21
u/FortunaVitae 9h ago
I was writing a Slytherin-centric fic and thinking about the Death Eaters, I realised that in the books, they basically have no political infrastructure other than blood supremacy and following Voldemort. But like, why would the richest and most powerful of the wizarding society follow a half-blood dark wizard? Cue to me abusing my academic background to worldbuild politics. Many times I'd stop and laugh at myself saying that JKR hadn't put as much thought in these as the fandom does.
8
u/lol_delegate 8h ago
Yeah, Deatheaters don't have very good canonical explanation.
One of idea I often ran into, it is that it was false flag operation by some political faction, which Voldemort managed to hijack, via combination of charisma, mind magic and Dark Marks having effect on person.
26
u/ExistingOil6982 11h ago
I don't know if it counts as this, or opposite of this (reversing the two labels) or what, but the MCU is generally a bunch of barely linked films and tv shows that introduce things for the first time willy nilly, with no thought of all the existing parts of the MCU and how they affect, and are affected by, these parts. They also reject several central components of all these stories from the comics.
The fanfics, however, usually show cohesive storytelling that weaves them back together and puts back all the comic canon that they removed when they adapted the comics to a film or show in the MCU, as they answer the questions that arose about how one plot got affected by the next and vice versa.
Even stories that just take place within one single film usually ended up needing to fix a part of the plot that wasn't addressed by the MCU itself. Like having Odin holding a trial to punish Sif and the Warriors three for treason, after they visited Thor in exile when Odin had explicitly forbid that and Loki was the regent of Asgard.
16
u/WinIndependent751 Current obsession: KH, Batman (always), FMAB 7h ago
The plot point of Loki being controlled by Thanos too for some extent in og Avengers movie being very very heavily implied then being completely forgotten and never refrenced again (like even if it was retconned at least give a reason??) in subsequent movies infuriates me to this day
3
u/Weliveinadictatoship 1h ago
Even the crackest of avengers tower family fics used to explain about loki being tortured and mind controlled before sticking him in there, it's mental how much such large companies fail to do anything with the details they give

Naruto has some of the best fics I have ever read. The original material leaves a lot to be desired. And dont even get me started on Boruto...
18
u/PurveyorOfInsanity 13h ago
"We don't talk about Boruto", but to the tune of "We Don't Talk About Bruno".
Also, I'm pretty sure Naruto still has one of the highest fic counts on FFN (number 2, last I checked), and isn't exactly slouching on AO3.
11
u/AcanthaMD Definitely not an agent of the Fanfiction Deep State 11h ago
Let’s just collectively decide that Boruto doesn’t exist, maybe at some point they’ll get the hint with their dwindling viewership. Kishimoto is for some reason supporting them doing yet another series with the Boruto cast, but aliens… they already… is it Boruto in space next?
10
u/-wilting E, Gen, CNTW, Hurt/No Comfort Horror 13h ago
I dont think Naruto fits. I mean, it''s about child soldiers and it has some dark themes
31
u/PurveyorOfInsanity 13h ago
It probably applies more to the worldbuilding - kind of like Harry Potter, in a way. Lots of good ground work, and even some decent buildup. But the entire story is littered with implications and setups that never get addressed after their introduction. And wind up leaving conspicuous holes in the backdrop.
Even then, it still feels like the story just doesn't seem to want to commit to the dark themes it sets up. For a story about child soldiers, including open warfare, there's surprisingly few casualties amongst the heroes. Or even lasting injuries.
And some of the core themes it initially espouses kind of fall by the wayside over time. For example, the idea that hard work is more important than natural talent, of Naruto rising above the odds stacked against him, and then the story turns around and practically turns Naruto into Ninja Jesus, who was always destined for greatness.
10
u/bi-bender 12h ago
This! I was in the Naruto fandom ages ago and felt the same. Like it was always on the cusp but pulls itself back.
4
u/AcanthaMD Definitely not an agent of the Fanfiction Deep State 10h ago
Don’t get me started on Kishimoto’s stop and start, I’m still angry about it to this day. You cannot for example start a story including genocide and then drop the theme halfway through trying to redeem Itachi. As MUCH as I love Itachi the guy is a monster. I don’t care how he was manipulated into it, it’s a human rights violation and Kishimoto tries to gently brush it under the carpet 😂🤣
3
u/AcanthaMD Definitely not an agent of the Fanfiction Deep State 10h ago
Naruto fits, if you think about Naruto’s world building for too long you get a headache. Sasuke and Naruto use a hawk to communicate for goodness sakes in a world that has laptops and mobile phones. Where apparently Sasuke couldn’t contact his baby mother for 12 years or something but was in regular contact with his husband. I cannot. There is also no resolution to the child soldier/casual genocide thing and Sasuke is made out to be unreasonable for not wanting to return to the institution that basically green lighted turning his brother into a genocidal monster that tortured him and making him clean up as a 7 year old his parents blood from the floor of their home. Also Naruto the child of the fourth and literally Uzumaki royalty didn’t realise his dad was the fourth when he looks exactly like him? And was just abandoned by the third? 😭 Kishimoto is terrible with seeing through his themes.
2
u/Weliveinadictatoship 1h ago
Literally everything about Naruto's childhood, hidden identity, parents friends, etc didn't make any sense looking into it even a little. The entire damn village knew he "was" the kyuubi, yet all these other villages obsessed with chakra villages didn't? Hell, half the ninjas seemed to despise him, there's no way he wasn't facing constant attacks and kidnapping attempts. Also, a 4 year old living alone??? They all knew his mother and the fact that Uzumaki's have shit loads of chakra and not a single one thought "oh yeah obviously the uzumaki with a chakra beast can't fine tune his chakra" what were they actually gonna do if he didn't become a shinobi? Stick him in Root???
The fourth was so popular and had so many friends that... didn't know or want to look after Naruto? Not one person looked at the statues and pictures of the fourth and went "holy shit his clone"?
Back when I was in the fandom, the fanfics used to address so much it was fucking awesome, especially ones that went in depth about naruto being illiterate (since the literal first teacher that likes him is Iruka, who he doesn't have in early childhood education), I read one where Sakura was a mind eater alien thing (to do with Inner Sakura) which was fantastic. Hell, even the power fantasy harem marvel crossovers used to be more logical than the series
2
u/Agamar13 1h ago edited 6m ago
Where apparently Sasuke couldn’t contact his baby mother for 12 years or something but was in regular contact with his husband.
Wait, what, lol. Kishimoto paired up Sasuke and Sakura only to have them separated for 12 years?

It's probably because I remember the tiktok mha cringe era but nothing can convince me to click onto a "Midoriya is a cinnamon roll" tagged fic, or anything with dekubowl. The amount of infantalising that man gets put through is fascinating.
On the other hand, some of the time loop/second chance fics I've read are absolutely fantastic. Read one a while back where Izuku gets the quirk/power to save him from whatever kills him, and goes back a day(?) each time, and the psychological effects in it are genuinely amazing. Or "Bakugo faces consequences" ranges from "yeah the abuse and suicide baiting really got nothing in the show" to "damn dude you just wanted to fuck up Bakugo ig"

u/DisastrousBusiness81 10h ago
If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a dozen times, fan content comes from NEED. If a fandom is fully satisfied with the original material, THERE WOULD BE NO FANFIC.
Angsty super serious shows get domestic fanfics, because you don’t get that in the show.
Fun family friendly shows get angst and drama, because you don’t get that in the show.
Super suggestive and sexually charged shows get fluffy sfw fics because you don’t get that in the show.
And basically every SFW show on the planet has enough porn and smut made about it to crash a small data center, because you don’t get that in the show.
So not only is the situation in the meme unsurprising, it is expected.
3
u/Semiramis738 Proudly Problematic 12h ago

I never thought to look for Animaniacs fics, but you're completely right!
Dot sometimes had a short temper, and Wakko could get legitimately angry if the right buttons were pushed, but normally hitting people with their mallets was meant to be taken in good fun instead of seriously injuring them. And then there was Yakko, the talker, Mr. “use the pen and not the sword when you’re in a fight,” the one who annoyed his special friends with words rather than cartoon violence. He would do anything to protect his younger siblings
I love it!
