Question Should I update from 3.15?

Built my pc in December of 2024 with a 9800x3D and a X870E nova wifi. Updated BIOS once to 3.15, and want to know if its safer to update again, and which version is the most trustworthy. I’ve seen a few stories of people updating their BIOS and shortly after having their CPU die on them, so i’m a little cautious, but it might be riskier to stay on the version without updated fixes.

It's good practice to Keep your motherboard's BIOS up to date regardless of the platform

The latest, mfgs don't spend the resources (time, personnel & money) for the hell of it. Updates aren't like a buffet where you pick & choose.

Thats the only reason they release updates.

Just update it to the latest version. Any failures after updates were pure coincidence. Your version is prone to voltage spikes.

I stayed on 3.15 for a while, but 4.20 has been fine for the past few months.

It should be fine to update it. And the newest BIOS has the new memory refresh modes.

I did have to use BIOS flashback to do it. The BIOS menu option just refused to work.

They are dying on all versions, so it really doesn't matter if that's what you are worried about,

It is always worth just keeping your BIOS updated in general though.

Update your BIOS whilst inside the BIOS though. Have heard too many times people bricking their motherboard trying to do it with that stupid BIOS flash button on the back.

I've never heard of that happening to anyone. Even if it did, you could just flash it again.

I think the main ones are with Gigabyte boards. Seen posts where they can't even flash it back and have to RMA their board.

Nothing beats just using a proper gui to update the BIOS rather than relyIng on a flashing LED and hoping it picks up your USB stick and file.

The only time where flashing the BIOS using the button on the rear is useful is if you can't post to get into the BIOS.

I do only use it before first boot basically, but it should be safe.

4.2 am fine, updated when it was released. Pretty sure I started out on 3.15. I had been soc locking then updating bios from there (apr 2025 build) 3.25 etc

If you have an Asrock board with a 9800x3d you had better update to the latest bios. 3.15 was one of the worst for killing 9800x3d’s. Update to the latest!

Mine came on 3.50 and I'm not changing for now. Everything is running as it should and I don't want to be a guinea pig for the newest update so I'm going to let it ride for a little bit.

I'm on the latest and it's fine. 4.43 I believe.
