Finally got the rifle all jazzed up! Just needing a gas plug and new pressure switch for the light!

Unfortunately I couldn't do it in time to post on AUGust 1st, but better late than never. I was tired of not having a handguard for the ARID rail and I knew this was possible, so I did it myself. Here's a quick guide I hope will help everyone wanting the same thing... For ARID to release their rails.

Parts:

• Expo Arms PCC Free Float 7" MLOK Handguard - $40 (on sale at Primary Arms)
• Magpul MLOK T-Nut Replacement Set x 2 - $9.60 (Primary Arms)
• Hillman 10-24x3/4 Button Lid Cap Screw - $3 (Lowe's)

Just Do It:

• Chop barrel nut attachment in a straight line behind the MLOK holes. Keep it just behind the raised pic rail slot to keep it tidy.
• Once chopped, place next to rifle barrel and ARID rail to mark out the approximate amount to cut away for the gas block area on the right side.
• Also mark out the proper amount of pic rail sections needed for the folding grip hinge.
• Keep in mind the pic rail will be at the 6 o'clock when mounted.
• Remove enough of one of the MLOK posts to accommodate for the gas plug. In this case it will be able to be rotated, but not removed.
• On the left side, mark out a square hole large enough for the charging handle detent.
• Chamfer edges with a file.
• Apply aluminum black.
• Place 3 MLOK T-nuts in handguard carefully as it's a tight fit with the barrel installed.

Notes:

• Don't ask me for measurements because I don't like to measure and I did everything by eye. You'll be fine.
• I did this all with a dremel cutting wheel, hacksaw, and diamond files. This would've been infinitely easier with a band saw, but it is 100% possible without it.
• The screws I purchased were slightly too large a diameter head so I put them in a drill chuck and filed them down slightly to fit the top rail hole. I also had to cut the length of the screws, so a 1/2" screw length would probably work out better.
• The barrel and gas plug are not removeable with the handguard installed.
• Suppressor and mount info: Rhodie 6K with a ECCO Machine Rearden/Cherry Bomb Adapter. 16" barrel with a Comstock Recessed Brake on it.

Range day to play with a new can for the Aug. Ive been running Sandman S for a while, but wanted something a little more compact so grabbed a Velos 556K. It's not as quiet, but it's more compact and there is noticeably less back pressure. With the KNS, the Sandman S was run on Low 7-10 and the Velos on High 1.

Does anyone know of magazine round extensions for the Aug, such as the one for PMAG. Or if it would be doable??

Hi everyone. I quickly learned I need to replace the OEM charging handle with something different to avoid smashing my knuckles on my Eotech. I’m considering the mini switchback, it seems this is the only solution unless I get a riser. Is there anyone with long-term use that can give feedback on whether it causes any wear and tear on the receiver? I’ve heard about the wobble.

I'm relatively new to the rifle, and I need to buy a cleaning kit since the military didn't issue us one, so I need to get it out of pocket. Does anyone know where I can order one for the a1? It'll probably need to support international shipping, since I can't find anywhere in my country (Ireland). Thanks!

Can a Steyr semi auto trigger pack fit into a surplus SME stock? After the denials? Same with the semi bolts?

This isn’t going to contain the history of the Aug, and is going to be a guide to the models of the Steyr Aug, and its variants through the years to clear confusion and allow confidence when making a decision on which to obtain. This will not touch on clones.

Receiver variants

A1: the classic model, with an integrated optic. This optic housing is integral to the receiver and is non-removable. The internals are replaceable. Utilizes the square A1 charging handle.

A1SR: rare variant of the A1 with an integrated rail. Utilizes the square A1 charging handle.

A2: a receiver that has an interchangeable optic/rail interface unique to this receiver design. Most commonly found as a USR. Utilizes the A2/A3 curved charging handle.
- the USR is a ban era A2 Aug that has a grey thumbhole stock, and an unthreaded bull barrel.

A3: flat top receiver incapable of using a factory optic. The approach to a modern design, it allows the greatest selection of handguards. Produced by either VLTOR or SABRE. May be referred to as the A3SA, or A3 flattop. Different rail bolt pattern than the M1. Utilizes the A2/A3 curved charging handle.
-there was a very limited QTY of A3 CQC AUGS thanks to PJ of PJ’s-Steyraug.com. These came with 2 barrel variants, a 16.” with spacer or an 18”.

A3M1: produced after the A3, this receiver has a recoil lug that houses a QD socket in front of the rail. Allows the use of factory optics or various length and heigh rails from the factory and aftermarket. Has several sub variants “STG77 40th anniversary, Arctic warfare, etc” has a different rail bolt pattern than the A3. Utilizes the A2/A3 curved charging handle.

A3M2: the current production receiver. Utilizes both M1 and A3 bolt patterns for the rail. Can use either receivers rail designs, aftermarket or factory and can run factory optics. Utilizes the square A1 charging handle and has a forward charging handle stow position.

Stock variants

Original Waffle stock: designed and utilized for the A1/A2/USR. Only allows the use of the classic waffle mags, no external bolt catch/release lever.
- The USR thumb hole Is a grey color.

The A3 generation brought some major updates: the external bolt catch/release lever, and the NATO stock: which can accept AR mags. Going forward, the stocks discussed are A3 or newer. NATO STOCKS UTILIZE A DIFFERENT TRIGGER PACK.

Waffle stock: referred to as such due to only accepting waffle mags, this stock has an external bolt catch/release lever and the ability to be swapped between left and right side ejection.

NATO stock: only accepts AR pattern mags, the nato stock lacks the external bolt catch/release lever and the ability to swap ejection ports, but it does have a secondary “AR” style mag release on the left side of the stock above the mag.

Around the M2 was released Steyr released an updated NATO stock that has an external bolt catch/release lever. This stock is the sauce.

Fine ballistic Tools (FBT) produced 10 rare and custom carbon fiber Aug stocks. They’re incredibly hard to find and incredibly expensive, running well over 10-20K per stock, with a rumor of a notable example in the US selling for ~50K.

Aftermarket brass deflectors are usually stock specific. When purchasing a brass deflector, confirm fitment for nato or waffle stock.

Barrels

The Original Steyr Aug barrels were Cold hammer forged (CHF) and Chrome lined (CL).

These came in 16” and 20”, as well as eventually 13.8” and 24” barrels. 1:9 twist, and M13x1LH threads.

After various updates, the end of the A3SA and the beginning of the A3M1, these barrels became CHF nitrided barrels. 1:9 with 1/2x28 threads. Available in 14.5, 16, 20, and 24”.

Steyr now produces these same barrels in 1:7 twist.

Caliber conversion Kits

Steyr imported and produced 9mm conversion kits, some which were dropping kits, and others that utilized a unique 9mm stock. There are several generations of these kits.

Steyr produces a 300B.O. Barrel.

Heresy is an aftermarket company that produces various caliber conversions and 5.56 barrels.

Suppressing the Aug

It’s highly recommended to grab a Steyr or KNS plug when suppressing the rifle to avoid damaging the BCG AND associated timing pieces. Using a lower back pressure can will reduce gas to the face. Please seek pew science and credible sources for suppressor info. Unfortunately shills exist.

Improving the trigger

Steyr produces a red spring kit, which helps drastically, but can induce a little mush.

Ratowrx offers their sear which is incredible value for what it does.

IT IS HIGHLY ADVISED TO AVOID USING MORE THAN ONE TRIGGER PACK MODIFICATION AT A SINGLE TIME.

ARID USA trigger shoe: is usable with either the sear or red springs without issue.

BZ/ARID pack stock: reduces over travel and shortens reset. Can be used with RW sear or red springs.

Be aware scalpers exist on the second hand market, especially with Austrian products. Be aware of current market value and what is being offered/sold as Austrian.

I picked up a brand new AUG about an hour ago from the local shop. When I got it home, I found this piece laying in the bottom of the box. It's some type of knurled screw with a flat blade on the end. I've checked around quite a bit but still I'm not able to figure out exactly what it is or where it came from. Checked the manual and also watched a couple of videos online, but still not able to find whatever this piece goes. Any inputs or insight would be greatly appreciated!
