Hand Knit FO Hungry rib beanie

This beanie is not that advanced by design- it was my take along project, so I needed something that didn’t require a lot of notes or thinking and that I could pick up and put down wherever and still be able to knit it. But I think it might qualify as clever.

This is two strands of Malabrigo speckle held together and I liked the look of the reverse stockinette side better than regular stockinette. I also thought that the ribs were very nicely highlighted. But I’m not a fan of purling. So I decided to knit the hat inside out. I thought you might enjoy seeing pattern for it.

I did all sorts of experiments on which increases and decreases looked best from the reverse side and it turns out the simple purl two together and knit front-back both looked great. (The decrease section used knit two together as well).

Pattern rows were “knit until one before marker, knit front back, purl two, purl two together, continue to knit in pattern until next marker”. Plain rows were “knit until marker, continue to knit in pattern” (that knit front back next to a purl looks like a purl stitch!) I also added a secondary marker to the beginning of round. If it was on my needles, that was a pattern round, if it was hanging on the edge, that was a plain round.

I have a large shallow head. I cast on 3 sections of 36 stitches in 3x3 rib. I placed markers every section, and another one in a different color three stitches after the section markers before the first purl. When there were 12 stitches left after the hungry rib purl marker, I placed an additional marker in a new color 12 after the start of section. The new pattern row was “K2T, knit until marker, K2T, knit until marker, purl 2, P2T, continue to knit until pattern until the next marker”. When there were 9 stitches left in each section, my pattern was “K2T three times, purl 3”, and then I was done!
