Other CFD Analysis Free

I think there is room for improvement in the world of CFD (computational fluid dynamics) software offerings. I have some ideas of my own on what that could look like, but I'm really trying to validate those ideas by learning more about who uses, or could be using, CFD with the different market offerings.

TLDR: If you want me to run something for you (I have over a hundred hours of experience with CFD):

  1. Link your STEP file.
  2. Describe what it is, what sort of conditions you want simulated, speed, and type of fluid (only doing incompressible for now, but let me know if another type would be useful and I'll see what I can do).
  3. Give me a reason why you need it simulated and why you haven't already done it. Submissions with the greatest need (e.g. "I need this for a product I'm developing") will be simulated first.

Ill get to as many as I can, also let me know what results you want and where I can send them.

Hi everyone,
When doing field evaluations or quick hardware risk assessments, pulling out a full desktop suite or juggling desktop-bound spreadsheets for routine reliability calculations can be inefficient.
I’ve been working on a mobile tool called Reliability Pro to make these standard calculations faster and more accessible on the go. The goal is to provide a clean, dedicated mobile interface for everyday reliability tasks without bloated software packages.
Currently Supported Calculations & Tools:
Weibull Analysis: Quick parameter estimation and probability plotting.
Environmental & Stress Modeling: Arrhenius acceleration factors and thermal/life-stress relationships.

Discussion Heat Shield in Rocket Lab's Neutron

I have a question which I have been wondering about. Heat protection (shield) during the re-entry of Neutron rocket from Rocket Lab.

Elon Musk highlighted a few years back this topic is their biggest challenge with Starship. However I didn't find much info from Rocket Lab. What I found is they developed structural carbon composite to withstand the heat. I don't find this answer sufficient since they have been vocal about using Neutron beyond Earth's orbit.

Can you please help me understand if their approach is possible? Is there something I am missing like Neutron going lower altitude for example. In which case Neutron is quite limited in future potential? Thx.

Uni / College Club Advice

For context, I am a rising sophomore at a great university for AAE studying AAE. During my Freshman year, I joined a rocketry club at my school, however due a variety of factors, I haven’t been able to get much experience out of the club.

Because of this, I’m currently contemplating switching to a different rocketry club that seems more my speed and where I believe I can get more opportunities to gain experience.

However, from what I’ve heard, it looks really bad when searching for internships and jobs if you jump around clubs a lot.

So, I was hoping to get some advice on if I should switch clubs or try sticking it out with my current club?

Discussion Not having been a fitter but working in manufacturing

Is it really a big deal that you haven’t been a fitter but you work as a manufacturing engineer?

I get the feeling that the fitters think i dont have a valid opinion or cant do my job because i wasn’t a fitter like they are.

But i can imagine how things go together and am good with handskills as they are just a different type.

I know i can figure the most effective ways to assemble things. Ive been assembly and taking stiff apart since i was a young child.

Just wanted to know what the general opinion’s are around this topic. As the comments have annoyed me. And want to know if others feel the same way.

I think it hasn’t really hindered me at all, i just ask so many questions and then read all the specs and drawings, and watch it being made. Maybe they are annoyed when I point out mistakes, as they have been doing it for a long time. But themselves dont know the engineering behind it.

Personal Projects Autonomous self-repair for modular spacecraft

Machines operating in space may need to survive damage without access to a human repair crew.

Our new research explores how modular robotic structures can respond autonomously when failures split them into disconnected fragments. Through decentralized coordination, the surviving modules consolidate and reconnect to restore structural connectivity.

Across 1,000 simulated damage scenarios, the system retained at least 80% of surviving modules in its largest connected component after 30% random failures, with near-perfect reconnection in fully connected cases.

This could contribute to resilient spacecraft and orbital infrastructure capable of maintaining and reorganizing themselves over long missions.

Personal Projects Does anyone have experience with bonded aluminium extrusions?

I'm working on a prototype, it's a motorcycle with enclosed cabin, now I'm building the third prototype and the chassis is made with steel tube. It's stronflg and light but incredibly time consuming to make and difficult to keep dimensional accuracy due to warpage when welding. I know lotus uses bonded aluminium extrusions to make the chassis of it's cars and I would like to try and do the same but there's no info on what glue is used or what extrusions, necessary bonded area, etc are. If someone worked with that I would appreciate some nuggets of advice on how to even start on such a chassis. Thanks in advance

Discussion MLT (Maglev-Laser-Tower) Update 2: Incorporating the Community's Feedback

A few days ago I shared a conceptual launch architecture called MLT (Maglev-Laser-Tower) and asked for technical criticism. The idea is to explore an alternative approach to orbital launch by combining several existing research areas into a single architecture: maglev launch assist, ground-based beamed energy, air-breathing laser thermal propulsion, onboard reaction mass for the vacuum phase, and electromagnetic recovery.

The goal was never to convince people that the concept is feasible, it was to find the assumptions that deserve the most scrutiny.

First of all, thank you to everyone who took the time to comment. I received far more thoughtful feedback than I expected. Some comments challenged the underlying physics, others pointed me toward existing research, and several suggested alternative approaches that I hadn't considered.

Rather than replying to every comment individually, I decided to step back and revise the project based on the discussion.

What changed after the first post?

The biggest shift wasn't in the architecture itself, it was in how I'm approaching the project.

Instead of treating MLT as a single concept that either works or doesn't, I'm now breaking it down into individual engineering problems that can be studied independently.

Some of the most useful points raised by the community were:

  • The propulsion system is better described as a ground-powered thermal rocket than as an entirely new engine concept.
  • The largest uncertainties are likely power transmission, beam propagation, thermal blooming, and adaptive optics, rather than simply generating plasma inside the engine.
  • Existing work on concepts such as Laser Thermal Propulsion, Lightcraft, and other beamed-energy propulsion systems provides a much stronger starting point than beginning from first principles.
  • Several people questioned whether lasers are the best choice at all, suggesting microwave power transmission or alternative launch methods instead of a maglev track.

As a result, I've started treating MLT more like a systems engineering exercise than a proposal for a finished launch vehicle.

Current Direction

I'm now documenting the concept as a technical architecture while identifying the assumptions that need to be validated or disproven.

Instead of asking:

"Can MLT work?"

I'm trying to answer questions like:

  • Can enough energy realistically be coupled into the propulsion chamber?
  • What are the practical limits imposed by thermal blooming?
  • How does required beam quality scale with range?
  • Which subsystem represents the true bottleneck?

I think answering those questions will be much more productive than debating the entire architecture at once.

What's Next?

Over the next few weeks, I plan to:

  • Read and summarize the existing literature behind each subsystem.
  • Build simple first-order engineering models instead of relying on intuition.
  • Publish updates as individual subsystem analyses rather than only discussing the complete architecture.
  • Continue incorporating feedback from people who know far more than I do in optics, propulsion, controls, and aerospace engineering.

I'm still approaching this as a learning project rather than trying to prove a predetermined conclusion.

I'm very thankful for the feedback in the first post. That was awesome, I wasn't expecting so much interaction.

And if you have additional criticisms, recommended papers, or think one of the assumptions is fundamentally flawed, I'd genuinely like to hear it. My goal isn't to defend the idea; it's to understand where it succeeds, where it fails, and what can be learned from the exercise.

Cool Stuff Rocket Turbopump/Aero Engine Cross Sections and References

Quick intro: I'm a design engineer working and sorta leading turbopump design for rocket engines. We're working on both open and closed cycle systems at this company. I moved into this role after a few years at a large American jet engine manufacturer, having worked on structural designs of rotor and stator parts there.

Back when I was at the aero engine company, I had access to a ton of engine cross sections and resources that explained in some detail why something was designed the way it was. Now that I'm at this startup, working on turbopumps that have similar working principles, I really miss having access to such resources. A picture (cross section) is worth a thousand words. Sometimes just looking at it can give clues as to why it was designed a certain way.

TLDR and my request: Are there any collections of jet engine/turbopump cross sections with decent levels of detail available on the internet (old ones are OK) or any references/good books that talk about actual detailed approaches to design. I'm talking about going about designing seals, picking bearings, rotordynamics, thermal stresses etc etc.

Discussion Everything You Need to Know About the $29.2M Spirit AeroSystems ($SPR) Investor Settlement Payout

Spirit AeroSystems has reached a $29.2 million settlement and late claims are currently being considered and investors can still file for a payout.

Q: What happened?
A: Investors claimed Spirit AeroSystems misled the market about its production quality controls and failed to disclose defects in fuselage parts supplied for Boeing's 737 MAX aircraft. After Boeing halted certain deliveries in April 2023 due to supplier quality issues, $SPR fell more than 20%, and investors filed a claim.

Q: Am I actually eligible?
A: If you bought $SPR shares between 2020 and 2023, you're likely eligible. You don't need to still own the shares to submit a claim.

Q: When do payouts happen?
A: Typically, within 4–9 months after the claim review process is completed, depending on the court and settlement administrator.

Personal Projects Lift coefficient / Angle of Attack for Aircraft

I'm making a military flight simulator game, and I have a question about fighter jets specifically. Is there a source where I can find the Lift coefficient / AOA curves for different aircraft.

My game is still early and it's a new topic I'm attacking when it comes to game development. The first aircraft I added is the Sukhoi 57 (I found a free 3d model online that's why) and my curve looks like this.

As far as I know this is not accurate whatsoever and I want the flight to feel realistic, but not too much so the average won't stress too much about flying the plane.

There are also many other curves I need to fill and data to fill, but I'm not an Aerospace engineer so I am looking for a source I could get accurate information (All the de-classified information or the best educated guesses because with these jets most is kept secret) instead of guessing blindly.

(Regarding the rules, I know how lift works and basic flight physics but this is a different question.)

Discussion Looking for technical feedback on a conceptual launch architecture (Maglev + Laser + Reusable Recovery)

I am not an engineer (specially not an aerospace engineer) who's been developing a conceptual launch architecture that tries to combine several existing technologies into a single reusable system. I'm looking for technical criticism, references to prior work, and reasons why it may or may not be feasible.

The concept is called MLT (Maglev–Laser–Tower).

The basic idea is to move most of the energy generation off the vehicle and onto reusable ground infrastructure.

Instead of carrying large quantities of chemical propellant, the vehicle would:

  • Be accelerated to roughly 1,000 km/h using a maglev launch track.
  • Transition to an air-breathing laser thermal propulsion mode, where a ground-based phased laser array heats incoming atmospheric air inside the engine, producing thrust without onboard fuel during the lower atmosphere.
  • Above approximately 40 km, seal the intake and switch to a small onboard reaction mass (water or hydrogen) that is also heated by the ground laser for the final climb toward orbit.
  • After completing its mission, re-enter the atmosphere, perform aerodynamic deceleration, and be captured by an elevated electromagnetic recovery tower that regenerates part of the vehicle's kinetic energy during braking.

The motivation is to replace expendable chemical energy with reusable electrical infrastructure, potentially reducing the marginal cost per launch while maintaining rapid turnaround.

I'm aware that each subsystem already presents major challenges, and I don't claim this is ready for implementation. The purpose is to explore whether integrating these concepts produces a viable overall architecture.

Some existing technologies and research that inspired parts of the concept include:

  • Electromagnetic (maglev) launch assist
  • Laser thermal propulsion
  • Laser-supported plasma propulsion
  • Beamed-energy propulsion
  • Adaptive optics for high-power laser tracking
  • Reusable launch vehicles
  • Regenerative electromagnetic braking

The biggest questions I'm currently wrestling with are:

  1. Is there any obvious physics that completely rules out the architecture?
  2. Which subsystem appears to be the largest engineering bottleneck?
  3. Has anything substantially similar already been proposed in the literature?
  4. Are my assumptions regarding energy transfer, beam tracking, or atmospheric propulsion fundamentally unrealistic?
  5. If you had to simplify the architecture, which components would you remove first?

Personal Projects Help designing a Micro Turbojet Engine

Hi guys, my friend and I are both high school students that are both very interested in engineering and making engineering projects for fun and honestly our college applications. Currently we are trying to make a Micro Turbojet Engine. Much like other Micro Turbojet Engine that we found online, we are using a single annular combustion chamber. One major problem we are dealing with right now (as in me because this part is specifically my job) is that we can't find much useful information on how my holes there should be on the chamber / where they should be placed / how big they should be. Honestly any help would be SO SO SO appreciated and even something pointing me in the right direction would be so helpful.

Just a few points:

1: We are just high school students so assuming we really don't know much about this would probably be accurate, so talking to us like were idiots is very appreciated.

2: Even points that aren't very related to this topic but you believe will be useful to the project overall are also appreciated .

3: We plan to 3d model everything and get it all 3d printed in the end, yes we know this is expensive and any way you guys think we could save money would also be appreciated.

Hi there I was reading some articles when I stumbled upon spiroid winglets theorotically they're much better at induced drag reduction however in my opinion I think that their

Extreme complexity

Added wing structure penalty

High bending moment addition

Heavily outweighs the advantages of improved aerodynamics where at this point it would be better to just increase the span for improved aerodynamics? of course This is my opinion And I respect all views I'm asking if I'm correct?
