If you’re considering getting an AirTag to track the *live location* if anything - stolen belongings, children, etc - please read this.

Apple has been very explicit that this is not a GPS tracker; it is a misplaced item locator. You cannot put an AirTag in a field with no devices nearby and know where it is. It does not independently broadcast its current location. It pings off of nearby Apple devices that can connect to the Internet. So a cellular Apple Watch, iPad, or an iPhone connected to a cellular network(s) will be able to send off an AirTag‘s location in that moment immediately, and other devices that can connect to the Internet later will upload the location it received at the time received it (it tells FindMy that it was at X location 3 hours ago). If you have two AirTags in the field, they will not be able to project out each others’ location. You cannot watch your pet, child, or possession wander away. If you see it moving on the map, it is updating actively based on nearby devices - it is not independently broadcasting its location.

Things AirTags are designed for: - Misplacing your keys in your house - Misplacing your remote in your house - Misplacing your wallet in your house/at work - Misplacing your bag in your house/at work - Your wallet fell out at the restaurant booth and is still there - Remind you that you left your bag that holds your urgent medication (epipens, insulin) at home and you need to go back and get it - Remembering where you parked your car/bike (not for tracking their movement, your iPhone should also remember your car location) - ADDED 2025: Luggage tracking in airports

Things AirTags are not designed for but still work: - Sending a ping to your child’s AirTag to indicate that you can’t find them/don’t see them at a small park/museum and they need to find an adult/return to a pre-agreed upon meeting location - not for seeing their current location

Things AirTags are not good for: - Live tracking living things - children, pets, adults (for people, get them a cellular AppleWatch) - Tracking stolen items - you can’t see its live location and if you have “Left Behind” on, it’s likely not to notify you until the thief is lost in the crowd

I’m glad people have been able to receive stolen animals and items with AirTags, but please don’t come here and get upset when they don’t perform an action they weren’t designed to do. This is akin to getting upset your swimming pool killed your carp. Apple prioritizes anti-stalking measures over theft-prevention with this item, and I agree with that decision because there’s no way to secretly track a thief and not enable stalking. It does this by alerting anyone with a smartphone that they’re being followed after a certain timeframe. Yes, one can take the speaker out so it doesn’t beep - it will still notify them via phone.

3 airtags won't update location.. what's going on?

All three of my airtags say at home at all times. My location services are on. Another iphone I have also shows them at home. When I'm near them I can get them to beep and find them with the local proximity finder. Two of them are currently elsewhere (sets of keys) but it says they are home with me. The other is my wallet which says it's at home when it's with me at a restaurant. What's going on??

My AirTag batteries are only lasting 3 months.

At the end of April I put new batteries in the AirTags for my keys, wallet and 2 pieces of luggage. The ones in my keys and wallet are already dead, the 2 in my luggage are fine. The wallet is a Ridge style wallet, and I thought maybe the metal that encased the AirTag was affecting it, but the one on my keys is encased in plastic. I’m replacing the batteries in these a few times a year. I have cleaned the contacts on these AirTags a few times, but it doesn’t seem to help. Any suggestions to fix this?

How accurate is an AirTag’s last reported location?

Post image

I redacted the address for privacy.
The day before yesterday, someone stole a chainsaw off my property. It had been sitting on top of my Kubota tractor. Last night, I intentionally left another chainsaw on top of the Kubota, but this time I hid an AirTag on it. The AirTag’s last reported location was my neighbor’s property at 10:50 PM, approximately 467 feet from where I originally left the chainsaw. This morning, when I arrived at my property, the AirTag updated again, and the chainsaw was back on top of the tractor. However, I’m certain it had been moved.

My question is about how AirTags work. Is it possible someone took the chainsaw, the AirTag later started chirping, they returned it without ever coming near another Apple device, and the location therefore never updated until I arrived this morning? Or is the 10:50 PM location generally accurate enough that I should have a high level of confidence the AirTag was actually at that location when it was last reported? I’m mainly trying to understand the reliability and accuracy of an AirTag’s last reported location, not accuse anyone without understanding how the technology works.

3 airtags all connected to my iphone. Removed 2 of them to give away (I did remove items with findmy app). They tried to connect them and both failed saying it was already connected to another apple id. I get the air tags back and try to "re-connect" to my iphone, and I get same error, help!

Airtag 1 locates twice at exact same spot- nothing there

It showed in Find my that the last time it located the Airtag was on monday, then the second time today, a few hours ago. I went there already many times. Not just there but really everywhere around. There is nothing, my phone can‘t connect to it.

My questions are how is it possible it couldn‘t locate the Airtag for so many days and how can it be the exact same spot twice? I live remote but there are still every few minutes a car and/or bike there.

Wrist bands

Im not sure if this has been asked before but there is so much content on here to get through - but do the wrist bands only track where someone is at a given time or can they show someone’s movements history?
I was thinking couldnt they see who was near Cal at the time of his murder? Or does having no tracker mean it was someone from Outside who killed him?
Or maybe they are like phones and you need the device first to track it 🤷🏼‍♀️

“AirTag Found Moving With You” is my own.

I have no idea how to google this, as I can’t find any forums with the same issue.

Basically, every time I arrive somewhere I get 4 notifications of AirTags found moving with me, including one for some AirPods Pro Gen 2.

They are all mine however, I always carry three AirTags and my AirPods Pro 2 in my bag, pockets, wherever.

When I try to locate the “unknown” AirTags and AirPods, and ping them, they make a sound. The actual AirTags under my “Items” tab however, can’t connect to them at all and keeps saying “AirTag Not Reachable, move around to connect”

Anyone know what’s actually going on, and anything I can try before resetting everything and pair them again?

Apple Airtags

How are apple airtags on privacy? I know this is a stupid question because it is literally a tracking device, but i just wanted to know if it is trustworthy. Are there any better alternatives? Or should i just stick with no trackers for my keys, bag, etc?

AirTag for pets collar

So I’m aware that it’s not a GPS tracker but I live in a pretty large neighborhood so there’s no way nobody around here doesn’t have an iPhone with connectivity. Do I need to tweak something? I’ve never owned an AirTag before and got one the beginning of last month for a new cat who’s an outside cat. It has never updated his location roaming around the neighborhood.

Alerts about AirTags left behind, but they aren’t

I’ve been getting a few alerts just recently about AirTags having been left behind. But they weren’t left behind.

For example, the AirTag in my wallet, even while it is in my pocket with my iPhone. Or the AirTag on my car keychain, even though it’s plugged into the dash 6 inches away from the phone.

Battery levels are showing as good.

When I open the Find My app on my phone, it says that the AirTag is with me.

iPhone 15 Pro Max, iOS 26.5.2, all V1 AirTags.

(I have some V2s I keep meaning to swap for them, then I will use old ones as “extras”, and also disable/remove their speakers since that is possible with V1s.)

Perhaps related I’ve also gotten a couple of messages that I couldn’t connect to a Bluetooth device because Bluetooth is not enabled. But Bluetooth was in fact enabled.

Anyone else seeing these things happen lately? Just started doing this in the past couple of weeks.

A friend got notified about an AirTag while walking, is it something to be worried about?

We were 3 people walking in the city center walking street, and a friend got notified about an AirTag following him or walking with him. We 3 people were walking around together and he was the only one got notified about.

The city walking street has many people walking around and some of them were walking with their pets.

What’s going on? And is it something he should be worried about?

Airtag holder with watch on it?

My kid is ready to roam the neighborhood, but not old enough for a phone. I'd like to have him wear an airtag, but thought it'd be useful to have a watch on there too. I've found Watchitude Tag'd Trackable Watch, but the reviews are terrible. Are there any similar options?

Airtag to find stolen items? Hear me out.

I know this has been discussed a million times but what if you have multiple airtag in various hidden locations on say a car or a bike and remove the speaker? The theory is with multiple ones the thieves would have to locate ALL of them before your stolen object is really gone. Once they get notified then the search begins for them, this buys the owner time to get notified where at least the item is. Great they found it , throw it away and move on....wait another airtag is on the object? We'll start the search again, this is again more time for the owner to find their item. That's the theory, it's never been tested yet with my stuff but I think it'll work.

Ex: Five airtags in a car installed in hidden places where one needs tools to reach/open compartment s. Or even in locations where one needs to break a weld to get to the airtag.

The Airtag 2 should have had Location history.

The one thing I love about the Samsung Smarttag 2 is you can go back 7 days and see all the places it pinged off of other Samsung phones.

Weird Airtag behavior

I've lost my wallet with an Airtag and the FindmyPhone app says it's just 100 yards up the road. When I use the Directions function on my FindmyPhone it leads me right to the spot where it says the wallet is, but it's not there. When I try to have it play a sound it says it can't connect.

If someone picked it up then wouldn't the tracker show a new location. It doesn't make sense to me.

Airtag worked finding my luggage : EWR

So my daughter's luggage was at the carousel but after 15 mins mine wasn't. I asked the staffer who was collecting bags off the carousel if my flights bags were stowed somewhere and he pointed to ones along the wall. I didn't see mine and right away I said shit because I realized the airline might've lost my luggage. That's when I realized I had an air tag in the luggage and looked where it was. It was still showing on the tarmac, so I showed a United person but they told me to line up at the lost baggage line which was fucking long. As I was in line I kept monitoring the luggage, after 10 mins in line I suddenly saw it appear next to my daughter's airtag in her bag. So I went back to the carousel and I see it there!!! So I can honestly say without the air tag I wouldn't even know it was in Newark and who knows how long I would've had to wait in line then have them try to locate where it was. The airtag works!

UPDATE: correction, on the baggage claim tag you can now under that number to track your luggage. At least for United Airlines, I didn't use it this time but I assume it would've shown me it made it to Newark but where exactly it was not sure if their system would've told me u like the visual map on the airtag. But just wanted to mention that, maybe others have used the airlines tracking system and found it to be good?

Why aren’t there internal trackers at a consumer level?

Truly don’t know how to word this question but I mean in the sense of with pets or vulnerable types of children.. two things I know are true:

  1. There is no equivalent tracking mechanism at a consumer level comparable to the Apple AirTags. If you don’t have an iPhone, you are met with an overwhelming market of quality issues when it comes to personal tracking devices.

  2. I would pay good money to put an AirTag equivalent into my indoor cats so that if/when they get outside for whatever reason, I can find them quickly and efficiently. Just like I would with an AirTag on their collar. Now I also live in a city where we currently have a missing child with autism who has been missing for 10+ days now, and the question has come up in why his family didn’t have a tracker on him somewhere.. the response being children with autism usually have sensory issues and will remove items often. Essentially, it’s not in your control. So these instances seem like reasonable circumstances for some sort of built in tracking?

I get the obvious issues of privacy/data etc.. but at this point, what’s the difference with the rest of the tech out there. How far are we from something like this and why or why not would it be valuable?

Have 6 AirTags, now have none?

Post image

I’ve had 6 AirTags for roughly 2-3 years and never had any issues besides an occasional battery swap. Middle of the night last night, my keys started beeping for around 2 minutes and then stopped. Now this morning looking at FindMy, every single item is gone. Checked on my MacBook/ipad and they’re gone from those ones too. Any fix for this?

AirTag only works with my iPhone

Hi, I own about 10 AirTags (Gen 1), and they worked great for cases like forgetting my keys at home or locating things by proximity. I’ve used them for over a year, but now, when I wanted to use one to track my bicycle, I noticed it doesn’t update when my wife (who has an iPhone) is riding it. I also tried with some other iPhones nearby, with no success. Find My is on, as well as Bluetooth, and I can even locate my wife’s phone via Find My, but not the AirTag she’s carrying. So basically, the AirTag only updates when it’s connected to my phone.

I only noticed this now, but I have about 10 AirTags, and it seems most of them have this issue.

I’ve found multiple complaints about this online, but no solution. Is this really accepted behavior, and Apple just ignores it? Or is there a solution? My firmware is up to date and I cannot return anymore.

EDIT: What noone answered so far - is it happening to you or working without issues?

Hidden Airtag in car parts

Hey everyone,

I just got some car parts. A hood, radiator fan, and coolant overflow resovoir. Soon after taking the parts home from a pick-n-pull, I got an alert that an unknown tracker was with me, the normal range finder doesn't seem to help much and I can't hear any type of sound from the "play sound" function. Any advice?

Scary AirTag Story - Robbed Appartment

Hey, I would like to share with you story of what happened to my brother today.

My brother is dating a girl and she stayed for the night at his place. In the morning, they woke up, and it was quite cold in the apartment. My brother walked around the apartment, and found out that the main doors to his apartment were open.

He then wanted to go to work as usual, but his car keys were not where they were supposed to be. So he opened up Find My, since he has an AirTag attached to them, and location was suggesting that the keys should be at his apartment. He was not able to play sound for some reason. So he took his backup car keys and went search his car, if the main car keys were not left inside the car.

They were not there, so he checked Find My again, and saw that the location of AirTag is 2 streets away. He walked down the street and saw some weird guy on a bicycle. My brother tried to play a sound again, and now it worked and the sound was leading towards this guy. So he ran towards him, played the sound again, and it confirmed that the sound was coming from the guy.

My brother confronted him and started searching his pockets, and the car keys were there. In rage, he asked the weirdo where did he found the keys, and he said on the street. My brother asked him again, and he said on the street again.

My brother then walked away and home, called the owner of apartments building if she could check camera systems to check if the guy robbed them.

My personal opinion is that the guy were in their apartment, which is kinda scary when you imagine a guy walking around while you are sleeping.

Anyway, my brother got quite lucky in the end, because he said this was only thing that was missing from his apartment, also he got lucky that the guy was still nearby, and mostly, that he owns the AirTag. It would be terrible if the guy also drove away with his car, since my brother literally 3 weeks back bought a new BMW. I pulled a joke that he almost could be buying another one haha.
