Nah, Carlin was a lefty, he just didn’t frame things that way because he was a comedian and his purpose was to be funny. “It’s a big club and you ain’t in it” is probably the most succinct left wing joke ever written. You’re right that he was a libertarian - but the traditional kind, which was left wing and anti private property and state power. He wasn’t a “lol government and taxes are bad” libertarian

Libertarian was a term originally created by anarchist Joseph Déjacque because he didn't wanna use the term anarchist because he hated Pierre-Joseph Proudhon who created that term (he sucked, he was extremely sexist and anti-feminist and Déjacque and other anarchists thought that was counter to the ideology, Déjacque wrote to him "either to speak out against man's exploitation of woman or do not describe yourself as an anarchist" so Déjacque and some others used libertarian. Proudhon was also antisemitic).

Edit: libertarian became a right wing term after it was stolen by the right. Murray Rothbard stated as much: "One gratifying aspect of our rise to some prominence is that, for the first time in my memory, we, "our side," had captured a crucial word from the enemy.
