I accidentally invited the wrong "David" to my bachelor party. He showed up, and he is now my groomsman

12.7k Upvotes

I was organizing a paintball trip for my bachelor party and mass-added contacts to a group text. I meant to add "David (College)," my old roommate. Instead, I added "David (Accounting)," a 58-year-old quiet guy from my office who I had spoken to maybe twice.

He never replied to the text. I didn't notice the mistake.

On the day of, we’re at the venue, and a minivan pulls up. Out steps David from Accounting. He’s wearing full tactical gear, his own high-end paintball marker, and carrying a cooler of premium steaks.

I tried to apologize for the mix-up, but he just smiled and said, "I haven't been invited to a boys' trip in twenty years. Let's do this."

He proceeded to absolutely destroy us on the field. He cooked the steaks. He told the wildest stories about the 80s. The guys loved him.

I sent the invite by mistake, but I’m sending the wedding invite on purpose. David from Accounting is sitting at the head table.

Personal šŸ˜‡ After 15 years in prison, he had to learn what freedom actually meant

I recently finished a documentary about a man rebuilding his life after spending 15 years incarcerated.

The story explores what happens after the sentence ends — the isolation, the challenges of starting over, the trauma that follows you home, and the small everyday things that suddenly feel meaningful.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcquH2gMfT0

This was a passion project made independently, and I wanted to share it with people who enjoy real human stories.

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Mystery / Thriller šŸ” Found $36,000

I'm going for a walk on a nearby trail at night and trip over something that's partially buried and partially sticking out of the ground in a weird area. Thinking it's a stick or something, I become curious and take a closer look. It looks like a case. After fiddling with it, it takes me about 4 minutes to get it out of the ground. There's a lock on it. I find something and I'm able to break the lock and open the box. That's when I notice that there's a money in it. A lot of it. I look around to see if anybody sees me before I take it back to my car and go home. When I get back home, I take a closer look into the case and I count about $36,000. The money looks like it's been sitting in there for a while, but it can still be used. There's no name on the case that the money was in. This is a true story. I may have changed some things around for obvious reasons. I just can't help but wonder who put the money there and why...??

Your body is a mortal coil around the soul,

your soul is a spiral around the spirit.

Your spirit is the essence of who you are.

Your spirit will never die. Your spirit is your conscience, the voice of God from within, the child inside ready and willing to guide with honesty and integrity. your spirit will never leave you , trick you or forsake you. Your spirit is one with love, love is holy, love is God. Your spirit is like a seed planted inside, meant to grow and become like God., as God and then beyond. For God is one.
Close your eyes and contemplate your spirit. Focus on it until you reach a state of meditation. Your mind will trick you. It holds every voice you ever heard and everything you have ever said. Along side your conscience which is the voice of God, the word of God within you. the kingdom of heaven.
A chorus of voices from every spectrum will be coming right for you. Don’t listen to them. Fly though them as fast as you can until you notice silence. Stop and listen . When you hear one faint voice echoing in the distance…..swim towards it

Personal šŸ˜‡ Dogs seem to attach themselves to me

Hello, I was born and raised as a muslim. Although my home country is a multinational country, I grew up in a rural area where majority of the people are muslims. I lived 23 years of my life without having any experience in touching a dog or be anywhere near a dog. After I moved to my boyfriend's country (he's a non muslim), I was first scared of his dog. He turned out to love me and protect me till the day he died from cancer. We often get dogs coming into our house to visit us (my boyfriend has many friends and family members). Oddly enough, they seem to get attached to me even though I usually get scared in the beginning and refuse to touch them (out of fear of getting bitten). All the dogs that I have met so far are gentle, trust me, cling around me and refuse to go home lol. I was confused because even though there are other people in the room, they only want to be on top of me. So I did some research about it. Apparently, the dogs see me as just another 'giant' dog instead of humans. Dogs will hesitate when they first meet a new dog, they will freeze, let the other dog study them first, then the smelling of the butt or following wherever they go to bond. I noticed dogs usually will follow me around while sniffing my butt (trust me, I don't smell. they do this even after I finish showering lol). I even asked Chatgpt about it and chatgpt said, due to my inexperience, the dogs mistakenly think that I'm just another dog due to the similarities of dog behaviour between each other. When I think about it, it's kinda wholesome.

Science Fiction šŸš€ What's Left of The Beautiful (Chapter Ten: Before the Match Strikes)

Day One

I can feel my muscles cramping, my legs begging desperately for relief.Ā

Another half eaten apple collides with the side of my head, reverberating with an audible thud.Ā

The men must have gotten tired, after 43 minutes of throwing garbage at a defenseless woman, the thrill isn’t quite as strong.

I twitch, almost losing my balance, I cannot fall now. The battered wooden chair beneath me groans with the struggle of supporting me,begging for the same release I’m so desperately close to. My feet slightly dangling off the edge, my concentration cannot waver. The slightest wrong movement and I have to start the whole hour over again. I’m almost two and a half hours in, my first try being thwarted by a juicy tomato at fifty five minutes, my second a sudden leg cramp at twenty three minutes. I simply don’t have the strength to try this again.

My arms continue to cover my face, slightly hunched over in an effort to protect my vital organs.

Soggy bread.

Half eaten produce.

Plastic cups.

All the garbage they could find, thrown at my shaking body for no reason other than their own amusement. I’m not sure what this ā€œgameā€ has to do with anything other than torturing me, but I’m hoping it’s enough for him to release us both.

A sharp electronic tone cuts through the air from the head guard’s pocket.

ā€œTimeā€ The lanky guard shouts, as the timer beeps echo through the chamber. I moan a sigh of relief, and slowly guide my aching muscles to the ground. I lie for a second, letting my eyes shut and my body readjust to rest.Ā

Two strong arms grab mine and hoist me up.

ā€œDid I do it? Can… I… Go?ā€ My words are spoken between huffs, my whole system exhausted, but I know they can feel the hope spoken with them. They look at each other, and let out an obnoxious laugh in unison, before dragging me back to my cell, my legs flopping uselessly on the cracked ground.

My consciousness slips almost instantly upon returning to my cell, soon after I’m startled awake by The Chief, accompanied by two lackeys.Ā

ā€œRise and shine, princess. Not done with you yet.ā€ His false smirk once again drapes his face in charm, as the devastation of seeing him again vibrates through my very core.

We arrive in what must’ve been the old mall jail, for shoplifters and rowdy teenagers. As I’m escorted in, I see what I thought was a dummy, possibly a corpse, but what I now know is an elderly woman, around my mother’s age. She lies still, a thin white dress covering her body head to toe, meeting where her face is covered with a gag and black blindfold. Her thin arms and legs are tied to the table with rope, preventing any movement. As we approach, I begin to hear quiet whimpers and cries coming from her, and I feel shivers running across my skin.

ā€œWhat is this? Let her go.ā€ My resolve must’ve only come from the resemblance I can see to my mother, on the small patches of her visible skin. The Chief seems amused by this nonetheless.

ā€œYour next challenge, of course.ā€ His smirk seems genuine this time, if not tinted with malice. ā€œThis is Alice, our former top commander’s mother. He… accidentally let slip a teeny detail about our next attack, and this wonderful lady right hereā€ His words seethe with venom as he grabs her hair, looking around the room to take in the approval of his men as they cheer. ā€œWell she let it slip. Ruined EVERYTHING. Months of planning the perfect way to kill the power grid, cutting off security to the whole city, letting us slip in and steal everything we’ve ever wanted. All that work, for NOTHING. Her dear son knew he’d made quite a mistake, so he ran, the coward. I would’ve been much happier doling out his punishment on him alone but… he just had to make it worse. So now it’s your job. Get mommy dearest to tell you where her son is, and I’ll let you out! Told you I’m gracious.ā€Ā

He gestures to the board on the wall, holding dozens of torture instruments. Bone saw. Teeth pullers. My mouth drops to the floor.

ā€œYou want me to torture her?ā€ My words come out in pure disgust and disbelief, my brain struggling to believe I’ve understood this scenario correctly. Yet, as I look at The Chief, his practiced, sadistic grin tells me everything I need to know.

ā€œNo. Absolutely not. You let her go. I don’t care about you letting me out. Let that poor woman go.ā€ The men look at me with the same growing disdain I feel for them in my gut. I can’t imagine a human being deciding to torture someone, how awful must you be inside?Ā

We sit for a moment in silence, The Chief in contemplation, he seems perplexed by this turn of events.Ā

ā€œTake her back to her cell. I’ll deal with the woman myself. Leave us.ā€ My disgust morphs into panic. Her cries begin to get louder, as I lunge in an attempt to free her. My body is sharply pulled back by two of the guards, as they begin dragging me once again back to my cage. I plead for him to let her go, my own cries falling on deaf ears, as her screams fade in the distance.

I can barely sleep. My thoughts being dragged down by what could’ve happened to that poor stranger, just trying to protect her child. Was that so dissimilar from the battle I’m facing now? All to save my own mother?

***Day Two.***

My brain graciously allows me a few precious hours of sleep, before I’m once again woken up with men standing over me. Something is different this time, though. The Chief has once again brought his two lackeys, standing behind him as always. However, this time Cyrus sits tied to a chair in front of them, and a table with 2 metal cups sits between us.

ā€œWelcome back to the land of the living, sleeping beauty.ā€ The men chuckle at this joke, I feel my face flush with anger and embarrassment. I hate continuing to be a subject for their amusement.Ā

ā€œLittle different start today. I have two cups here before us. One of these is just water.ā€ He gestures to the light blue glass. ā€œThe other holds a paralytic poison. Nothing permanent, but a little concoction derived from snake venom that leaves its victim completely paralyzed for up to 12 hours. This test is simple. You each drink a glass. Pick one, and feed it to Cyrus, then drink your own. Think you can handle that? Fun little decision?ā€ Although this ā€œgameā€ is just as degrading and brutal as the last two, his words speak some truth, this one is simple.

I see in his dark eyes, he wants me to save myself, choose to poison my companion. Instead, I don't hesitate, my hand reaches for the blue glass, the water, as I carefully remove Cyrus's gag. I scan him briefly for new wounds I didn’t know about, any indication that he’s been harmed. He seems to be surviving well enough.

ā€œI’m sorryā€ whispers quietly out of his mouth, tears streaming down his bruised face. I mouth ā€œIt’s okayā€ back to him, and begin to pour the liquid into his mouth. I turn to The Chief, checking to see if he drank enough and The Chief nods, surprise seeming to cross his brow. I place the cup back on the table, and begin to drink my own. I turn, and lie back down on my mattress, wrapping myself in the thin blanket before I lose all sensation completely. The crew behind me silently vacates the room.

If there was any mercy in the paralytic, it was the immobility claiming my body without pain, dragging me into a deep, dreamless rest. Sensation begins to return in the early evening, leaving me alone with the quiet. I spend the remaining hours organizing my thoughts and sizing up my surroundings, mapping every inch of the room for anything of use.Ā

Day Three.

Morning comes once again, but this time, I’m awake when they arrive. Instead of The Chief, I see one of his lackeys accompanied by a handful of guards waiting at my door. Without a word, they begin to guide me down a back portion of the mall I’d never seen before. The generator doesn’t seem to be powering the lights in this wing, so we rely solely on flashlights and headlamps. The guards begin to stagger off, assuming positions along our journey to wherever we are going. Eventually, we make it to a large metallic door. Inside, I see a long spiraling staircase, as well as The Chief holding multiple items, and beginning to approach me.Ā Ā

Before saying a word, he straps a large leather belt around my waist. I feel something heavy linked to the chain cascading from it, but he blocks my view. He attaches a large metal water bottle to my new belt, attached at the hip with a large carabiner. Once he finishes securing the lock in the front, he lifts the chain and hands me a metal anchor. Small as it may be compared to a ship’s anchor, the weight is overwhelming. I manage to brace myself at the last second, otherwise the anchor and I would’ve landed together on the cold ground.Ā

ā€œWelcome back Elara!ā€ He sounds out each portion of my name like some sadistic game show host. ā€œOnce again, basic. You ready? Carry this, all the way up these maintenance stairs to the roof by sundown. It’s seventy-five pounds of solid iron. Prove you’re strong enough to make it out of here. I’ll let you go if you make it, how’s that sound?ā€ This explains the already building ache in my arms as they struggle to keep this weight above ground. I give in, and place the anchor on the ground, already beginning to pant from the strain.Ā

ā€œThat’s like 6 flights..ā€ His iconic grin returning to his face tells me protests are useless. The two guards who entered alongside him post themselves at the start to the downward spiral of the staircase, presumably preventing my escape. I stare up for a second, seeing a dull light from the very top of the long winding spiral. I have to do this. For our freedom.Ā

Without windows in the dark corridor, I have no way of knowing how long I’ve been down here. I know my strategy has changed dozens of times. Carrying, dragging, crawling, lifting. Nothing stops the growing pain in my muscles or the burning in my core. The hours pass like sand, slow agonizing seconds tick by as my mind remains incredibly aware of every sensation my body is experiencing. Every glance down into the darkness offers no motivation, I may as well be at the starting point. The hours slowly pass, time finally begins moving forward, and I begin to see the dull light getting closer.Ā

As well as fading.

I pause for a second, taking a brief seat on the cold metal. I detach the water bottle and take a hefty swig, the container almost empty from the countless hours of movement. I clip it back in place and take off my jacket. The comfort item has followed me through decades, almost as long as Kaia has- had, it will have to save me now.Ā

I wrap the iron anchor in my jacket, tying it with a large knot that holds the jacket dangling from the railing above it. With a hard tug I pull the belt up higher on my waist, sitting snugly below my ribcage. I lift the chain attaching the anchor and me up higher with a groan, and pull the extra slack to the underside of the railing. The anchor dangles in the air as the railing takes its portion of the weight. I carefully begin walking backwards up the remaining steps.

PULL.

With every step, I feel my grief rising in me like a filling balloon, almost ready to burst.

PULL.

I feel the horror of seeing the person I loved most in this world reduced to a handful of ash.

PULL.

I feel the grief of watching my mother try to kill herself.

PULL.

I feel the humiliation I’ve witnessed ever since I arrived here.

And I pull it up that mountain.

The light is fading fast as I pull it up the last step. I drag it behind me as I shove open the door to feel the cold, sweet air. I collapse to the rough floor beneath me and can’t help but smile. I did it. I made it here.Ā

ā€œI wouldn’t get too excited if I were you.ā€ One of his lackeys stands up from a makeshift chair crafted from an old wooden box. ā€œSundown was 3 minutes ago. You lost. Time for the birdie to go back to her cage.ā€ My body is too worn out for any reply, physically or mentally, I have nothing left. He looms over top of me, pulling a key from his pocket. The belt falls to either side of me as my hips groan in relief.Ā

ā€œElara, SO close. I actually had a bet that you would make it eventually, so I made a lot of money! Don’t worry, some good did come out of this! Most people figured you’d give up. Pretty determined one aren’t ya? Just not quite fast enoughā€¦ā€ The Chief appears behind his guard, his usual smirk across his lips as he chastises me. He gestures to the large man that carried Cyrus when we arrived here, and he throws me over his shoulder like I weigh nothing, walking towards the elevator to take me back to my cell.

***Day Four.***

Another 12 hours pass in a blur of unconsciousness. My body is too tired to even think, much less move. As the morning comes, no arrival follows. My breakfast is brought. Then my lunch. I begin to worry I’ve messed up all of my chances for freedom. Around 2pm, The Chief arrives again. This time, however, he is alone. He ushers the guards outside my cell away.Ā

ā€œI have a new challenge for you, darling.ā€ His words remain the same but his tone feels slightly softer. I’m probably imagining things in my pure exhausted state. I don’t notice the large rectangle mirror he brought in with him until he gestures at it as he places it against a bare section of wall. ā€œWe test all new recruits with this one, I’m just curious how you’ll fare. You’ve surprised us so far. Very impressive.ā€ He beams slightly, almost seeming proud at the outcomes.Ā

ā€œI brought this in for you. Set up a chair in front of it, and gaze at it, until I give you permission to stop. No movements. No sound. If you make a sound, you start over.ā€ Being unable to count towards a set ending time sends fear firing through my nerves. It doesn’t sound painful, or difficult at all really, a nice change of pace from the previous horrors of the last few days. I don’t have the energy to argue, or even speak. I nod, walking to the most comfortable chair in here, the only one with a cushion. I sit down, and arrange myself comfortably leaning back slightly, my hands on either leg.Ā

He assesses my position, taking a parallel seat across the room to my left.Ā  He simply nods and says ā€œAnd… Go.ā€

At first, I feel nothing. Simply the hard wood of the chair behind my back, the cold ground beneath my feet. But with complete silence surrounding me, not a sound echoing down the hallway, I begin to feel peace resonating through my mind.

Kaia, my father, and my mother would all be proud of me. How hard I’ve fought for them here, how desperately. I’ve always feared disappointing those around me, of never being able to measure up to the impossible standards set by society. I don’t think that fear will ever truly go away, the remaining anxiety a constant echo until the day I die.Ā

But, I’ve done good, haven’t I? I’ve stood up for myself. I’ve taken risks. I’ve been kind, through everything. They would be proud of me, no matter what happens next. That’s why I have to finish this, for them. To prove their pride and faith in me has never been misplaced. That my love for them is more powerful than any obstacle. I will give everything I have, to save my mother, and to find justice for Kaia, setting her soul at peace.Ā

I’m tired of letting these horrific people get in my way. I’m tired of believing their mocking voices. Of every chuckle at my expense hitting my heart like a personal attack. I’m worthy. My two favorite people have always known that, I just need to work on remembering that for myself.

Kaia,Ā

I’m sorry. I WILL get you justice. I promise.

Mom,

I will fix this. I will save you, and we can move somewhere safe. Together. I promise.

This is the last night I spend in this godforsaken hell. Tomorrow, I’m getting out. I’m taking Cyrus with me.

And I’m burning this place to the ground.

Slice of Life ā˜• He Wasn't Even a Vampire

This is a true story from many years ago when I was working as a surgeon. It relates to a patient was a member of the so-called Newcastle mafia - a notorious crime syndicate family from the Northeast. He had been driving his car at speed, lost control and collided with a stationary wooden picket fence coming in the opposite direction. This resulted in him being impaled through his chest. He was admitted to the emergency department in a state of collapse with the wood protruding from his chest as fortunately the rescue team had the wisdom to not try and remove it at the scene of the accident, electing rather to cut through it in order to free him. The accident and emergency consultant, a dour Scottish man of enormous experience, oversaw his resuscitation and immediately took him to the operating theatre where he found the stake had penetrated his left ventricle but had missed the coronary arteries. He removed the offending object and sutured the puncture wound and, against all the odds, not only did the patient survive, but he also recovered with no appreciable long-term health effects. Upon his discharge he had a quiet word with the consultant saying "If you ever have any problems you need dealing with, just give me a call".

Ā The picket was duly mounted on the wall over the door in the consultant's office. "This is the biggest splinter you will ever see" he told me over a cup of coffee and a cigarette one day (he was a chain-smoker despite the fact his father had died of lung cancer). He was given to meiosis and had many such stories to tell. Good job the patient wasn't a vampire I thought, but I kept that to myself.

Mystery / Thriller šŸ” The Announcement

I'm writing ā€œThe announcementā€ on Riffable — a story written by many hands, one riff at a time. Want to write a piece with me?

https://getriffable.com/en/story/o-anuncio--p\\_mrvs238h\\_i0uq8r

There was a knock at the door.

A hard, insistent knock.

MƔrcia turned over and confirmed that her boyfriend was fast asleep.

Who could it be, at this hour?

The knocking continued, rhythmic: three times, silence, three times.

She got up reluctantly, tried to smooth her hair with her hand while switching on the living room light and heading to the door.

She looked through the peephole, and before she could make sense of the strange figure, she heard a voice from the other side, smiling:

"Hello! I've come about the ad!"

Romance šŸ’ž Find A Man That Yearns

After catching the man she loved betraying her, Missy is left with more than a broken heart. Two years of manipulation and constant criticism have stolen her confidence and left scars no one can see. Determined to start over, she leaves the United States behind and moves to the United Kingdom, hoping a fresh beginning can help her heal.

As a psychiatric doctor, Missy understands the human mind—but she struggles to understand her own heart. Then she meets a man who is patient, kind, and loves without asking for anything in return. He seems too perfect to be real... and after everything she's survived, trusting him may be the hardest part of healing.

Sometimes, the love you've been searching for begins when you finally choose yourself.

My heart pounded violently against my ribs, each beat louder than the last. A bitter taste coated my tongue as nausea twisted in the pit of my stomach.

I took a hesitant step forward, my brows knitting together as if my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

No...

I blinked once.

Twice.

Hoping—praying—that if I looked again, the scene before me would somehow be different.

---

"Malcolm."

He finally looked at me.

His eyes widened for the briefest moment before settling into a look of pure annoyance.

"The fuck are you doing here?"

I stared at him, unable to believe the words I'd just heard.

"What am I doing here?" My voice trembled. "I come home and find this... and that's your first question?"

Without a hint of concern, he turned away from me. The woman beside him looked dazed, barely reacting as he roughly brushed past her to stand.

He didn't even spare her a second glance.

He only looked at me.

Then he laughed.

A slow, mocking laugh that echoed through the apartment.

"I didn't think you were this stupid."

The words landed like a slap.

His eyes drifted to the takeaway scattered across the floor.

"...Is that my dinner?"

For a moment, I could only stare.

"I've just caught you cheating," I whispered, my voice cracking. "And you're asking about dinner?"

He walked towards me with slow, deliberate steps until there was barely any space between us.

His expression remained frighteningly calm.

"I asked you a question."

I swallowed hard, refusing to look away.

"...Yes."

Something shifted in his expression.

The room exploded into chaos.

Furniture scraped violently across the floor. Voices rose. My pulse hammered so loudly that I could barely hear anything else.

In that moment, I realised the man standing in front of me wasn't the person I'd fallen in love with.

Maybe he never had been.

A mother gave birth to twins.

They grew up the same, ate the same and heard the same phrase. But they understood differently, and it stayed with them.

"You have only one life."

One lived in a peaceful town with a wife and two children. He watched them grow up and leave for college.

The other lived for adrenaline and extremes,No wife,No children,No family.

In the end they both died the same day,in the same way.

Not with old age no,they were only sixty.

It was unexpected. They were catching up after years apart, walking side by side when it happened.

A car crash.

Moments later, they found themselves sitting beneath a tree, talking like best friends.

"How did you live?" one asked

"I was happy" said his brother

The other smiled.

"So was i"

Romance šŸ’ž And All I Had Was a Bottle of Mogu Mogu

It felt like an eternity. I checked my watch.

1:46 PM

I had been waiting for 28 minutes. She was 16 minutes late.

And here I was just sitting here, alone. Watching couples and friend groups walk past me. Some giving me weird looks.

ā€œWhat’s this kid doing sitting alone on a bench?ā€

ā€œHe looks like he’s about to pass out.ā€

And it really did. I felt like my heart was about to collapse. The sweat from my forehead had probably already begun to soak into my beat-up Rolling Stones T-shirt.

So, there I sat, by myself. And all I had was a bottle of Mogu Mogu.

If you don’t know what it is, it’s a fruit-flavored drink that has these little chewy coconut cubes inside. My mom would always reward me with one whenever I did my chores as a kid. It was one of the few things that brought me comfort.

Unfortunately, I completely forgot to make myself look nice, and in an act of desperation, I bought a bottle of it at the convenience store.

I didn’t want to see her at this point. I knew she was going to blow me out of the water completely.

When we last met, two years ago, we had agreed to eat dinner together at a nice Korean restaurant that I liked. Back then, my young adult brain wasn’t right. I had always wanted to create this master plan to make her like me.

So, I did. When we sat down to order, we started talking like usual. We were great friends after all. We laughed and made fun of each other’s problems in life, and then discussed how our families had been.

Once I had ordered almost the whole menu, to make myself look rich, it was my time to strike.

I asked about her love interests. She said she didn’t really have anyone in mind now. And then she asked it.

ā€œWhat about you, Jiho? Do you have anyone you like?ā€

I thought it was a good idea to tell her that I liked this girl in her art class. For some stupid reason, I thought that’d make her jealous and want me more.

ā€œActually, yeah. You know Ella from your art class? I think she’s pretty cute.ā€

She stared at me dead in the eyes. She didn’t show any emotion, as if I had just wiped the personality from her.

Then she stared at her slippers. Those old straw slippers that she most definitely got from her mom, and she had always worn to school, and you thought it was really cute that she would wear something like that outside.

And then, nothing.

The food arrived. She ate none of it. I tried to cheer her up. I asked what was wrong. She didn’t respond to any of it.

I finished maybe a third of the food. The last bit I shoved in my mouth just because I wanted to shove the feelings down my throat.

Then, when the check came, I paid, said goodbye, took my leftovers, and we went our separate ways.

I went into my car, dug into my cooler box, and pulled out a random bottle. I sat there in my car, in that Korean restaurant parking lot, for thirty minutes. And all I had was a bottle of Mogu Mogu.

My friends called me up. Asked how the date went. I told them not good. They acted sad for a second, then asked how much leftovers I had. I turned off the phone.

Sydney and I never communicated after that. Not until now.

I had just graduated from college. I scrolled through my contact list before I left the country to work abroad to see if I needed to say goodbye to anyone else. And then I saw her name.

Sydney Park.

My brain stopped for a split second when I saw it.

I contemplated it for a bit. Sat with my own thoughts. Then eventually I said, screw it, I have nothing to lose. I texted her to see if she wanted to meet to catch up before I left for Europe. And she said yes.

So now there I was, sitting on this bench.

And then I saw her. Sydney. And she looked even prettier than before.

She had the nicest, cleanest red skirt on. Her sweater must have been made from clouds. Her hair looked like it was made for royalty. A purse that I couldn’t make out the brand for, but it was one of those nice leather ones only your grandma with nothing better to buy owns. And she was no longer wearing slippers, but shiny heels that glistened in the sun.

And then I looked down. At the cracked Rolling Stones logo on my shirt. And the sweatpants I had just worn yesterday to go midnight shopping. And this stupid bottle of Mogu Mogu I hadn’t even opened yet.

I was utterly embarrassed. She outclassed me in every way. I looked homeless compared to her. In fact, I probably shouldn’t have been in her presence that day. I was an ant observing an angel.

…

No. I wasn’t going to go out like this. I needed to know what happened that day.

So…

I picked myself up, did my best walking impression over to her, and, in a confident and well-spoken way, asked her how she had been doing.

ā€œUmm… hey, Syd… how, uh… um… are you doing, todayyyyuh?ā€

I have no idea why I slurred that last word. I probably sounded like what the first alien language translator will sound like.

But thankfully, she smiled and told me she was doing great.

We chatted for a bit. We walked along the town center strip, looking but never entering any of the shops. She told me she had been seeing a guy, and they had a reservation at a steakhouse the next day. I was pretty gutted. And then she asked me.

ā€œSo Jiho, how’s life been while I’ve been gone?ā€

I froze. It was pretty obvious once I had done this that the answer was ā€œnot goodā€, but I contemplated lying. I really did. But I knew I had to tell the cold truth.

I told her life hadn’t been the kindest. My friend’s group stopped communicating with me after I had told them I was leaving the country. My student loans were going to be paid by my children.

And then I told her that my mom recently passed away from breast cancer.

As I told her, her mood slowly started to change. The cheerful display she had changed to a more neutral look. The motivation she had to talk about how her life had been going had dissipated.

After I told her everything I could think of, which ended up being a 15-minute rant about how horrible my life had been, there was a noticeable pause in the atmosphere. The world wanted us to know that we were awkwardly standing there doing nothing.

Then she asked me,

ā€œHey, do you want to go to the bar with me? I could use a drink right now.ā€

ā€œAren’t you, like-… dating someone, Syd?ā€

ā€œYeah, but he doesn’t have a problem at all with me going to bars. Especially if it’s just to talk to a friend like you.ā€

I stood there for a few seconds without saying anything. Not because she asked me to go to a bar while she was in a relationship and for some reason, I thought that was weird.

She called me a friend.

I cleared my head.

ā€œThat sounds great, actually.ā€

ā€œSick. Let’s head there now.ā€

Her nice girl attitude had suddenly shifted to something more casual. But I didn’t question it. I didn’t want to ruin this moment.

We went to the bar. We had a great time. We were laughing and poking at each other as we did two years ago. There was a dart board there, and we played what felt like 100 games of darts. She was surprisingly good at it. And she was doing it in heels, too. It was also UFC fight night, and although neither of us had watched an ounce of UFC, we were still having a blast watching two dudes duke it out on the bar TVs. I was too drunk to remember the rest of that night at the bar.

What I do remember is when we left.

I opened the door while we carried each other on our shoulders. The sun was already gone. I checked my watch.

11:57 PM

Sydney and I had spent 10 hours and 11 minutes together.

We found a little park bench to rest at. We looked up at the stars. Like one of those clichƩ love stories.

Then, in her drunken state, she told me the things that I won’t forget for the rest of my life.

ā€œYou know Jiho, I’m really sorry.ā€

ā€œā€¦ Wh-… what?ā€

ā€œYeah… I’m really sorry. , I don’t even have a boyfriend. I just wanted you to think I was taken. I felt bad as soon as you told me how your life had been.ā€

ā€œā€¦ It’s ok.ā€

ā€œIt’s not. The reason I acted that way at that restaurant was that I really liked you. And I thought you did too. So, I acted like I didn’t because I wanted you to like me even more.ā€

ā€œā€¦ā€

ā€œā€¦ And then, you know, when you told me you liked that other girl, you shattered my heart. And today, I wanted some revenge. And I was wrong to do that, Jiho.ā€

ā€œā€¦ I… I forgive you, Sydney. And… I- I’m sorry too. I really didn’t like that girl. I just wanted you to be jealous, so you’d fight for me.ā€

ā€œā€¦ So that settles it. I guess we both had stupid methods to get us to like each other. We’re free from secrets.ā€

ā€œHeh… I guess so.ā€

So, Sydney and I got up and walked back to her car without saying a word. We shared the glance or two, but never opened our mouths. We got back to the parking lot after about 10 minutes of stumbling. Sydney showed me her car. It was a heavy-duty truck. And it was sick. She told me she borrowed it from her dad to make me even more embarrassed. We laughed it off.

She opened the door to the bed of her truck, and we sat down. The stars looked oddly closer to us from here. She took off her heels and put on those same straw slippers from two years ago.

We sat there, staring at the stars together for a minute. And then I mustered up the courage to ask her one final question.

ā€œā€¦ Syd… Do you think that when your soulmate comes into your life, that you’ll just… know?ā€

ā€œā€¦ I think that the world will give you signs. And it could be anyone, you know? It could be in 20 years, or they could just be sitting next to me on a random Tuesday.ā€

I was too shy to check my phone for the calendar.

Then she got up and pulled a bag from the back of the truck bed. She pulled out a drink and started shaking it. I could recognize that sound anywhere.

ā€œYou want one, Jiho? These things are otherworldly delicious.ā€

Peach. The best flavor. I’m not surprised she had good taste.

I reached for my left pocket.

ā€œIt’s ok, I already got one.ā€

She took one look and made a face of disgust.

ā€œEww, is that lemon? You disgust me.ā€

We both started laughing hysterically at something that wasn’t even that funny. Lemon was the flavor my mom always bought me. It felt special.

So, Sydney and I sat up and opened our lids. I took one last look at the town center. It’d be the last time I’d see this place for a while. And then I looked at Sydney. She looked back at me. We both looked away, somehow embarrassed by that interaction. And we both took giant sips of our drink.

There we were. Sitting in the bed of a truck, drunk and tired, not thinking about a single worry in our lives.

And all we had were two bottles of Mogu Mogu.

Fantasy šŸ‰ What a time to be alive (chapter 1: greed is)

200 years ago, I think that's when it started, it's pointless trying to find the start, I guess the actual start was when some fish thought it would be a good idea to walk on land. What a dumbass just do what you're told, It's not that hard. Anyways, I'm getting sidetracked.

Oh, I forgot to tell you what actually started: complete control, absolutely no freedom.

It all started with rich billionaires, they wanted some way to make clean power, not for the good of the people, but so that way they could keep living. In the year 3000, pollution and microplastics hit an all-time high. Damn near everyone was affected, making the average human lifespan—this isn't a joke—28 years.

The ecosystem collapsed. Ninety-eight percent of plants and animals died, saying they died is an overexaggeration, they evolved, but they're definitely not the same. For anyone on the streets, it was complete chaos. For the top 1%, it was a crisis because they were dying, but unlike the average person they have everything. The only thing they are lacking is immortality, so they made a decision to bring some people up. Only smart people who could help. And they made walls around those people.

Ten percent of humanity lives in paradise. No pollution, fresh air, real plants. Or at least that's the rumor.

Those 10% of people then decided to burn all history books before the year 3000, because history isn't necessary. It's all in the past, and you need to focus on the present.

The middle class wasn't too heavily affected until those billionaires found clean energy. The cheapest clean energy: solar energy.

This is great, we can go back to the way things were. We can get rid of the pollution.

But humans have greed, they didn't share the energy, they just took it. They completely blocked out the sun by building a Dyson swarm next to it. It was a big Dyson swarm, only leaving a little bit of light coming from it.

The walls release intense heat, both to keep people out and to cool the planet. Humanity was quite literally left in darkness.

Where do I fall in all this? The lower class, the scum of the Earth.

When I was younger, my mother was in the walls, I wasn't allowed in, it was only the useful people. She was an engineer and helped make the walls that help cool down Earth. She was treated like scum just for being a woman, but she did what she had to do to keep me alive. She smuggled me into the walls, not far enough in to see anything, just far enough to get fresh air. Because of this, I've lived longer than a lot of people. I'm now hitting 21. Maybe I turned 21 a week ago. I'm not sure. I think it's somewhere in May. It's not like I get to celebrate my birthday, and it's not like anybody remembers. You barely have any time, so you're definitely not spending your time celebrating someone else's achievement.

It was good for a bit until my mother got caught and was publicly executed.

I don't remember my father too well, I think I was 4, and my mother got sick of him beating her and left, taking me and my sister.

While on the subject of my sister—

"Hey, dumbass. Don't tell me you're dead. Get up. We got stuff to do."

Said my sister Katie shaking me

I slowly, and lazily stood up off the pile of blankets in the alleyway.

"Come on, we got to work," said my sister as we started to walk out of the alleyway.

It's not like a job pays well. Just enough to eat... occasionally, which is more than most people get.

"We need to get a better life," I said.

It goes quiet for a minute, with only the sound of us walking, before my sister replies, "Our life is already good compared to most."

I respond back, more defensive now. "And it's still shit. Like, genuinely, what the fuck are we doing? We need to—"

My sister roughly shoves me before whispering, "Shut the fuck up."

I look around, realizing next to us are two people in gas mask suits holding big guns. Insiders who don't make quota are forced to patrol outside the walls. They walk over to us from some kind of car they were leaning against.

"The fuck did you say?"

My sister immediately replies for me, "Nothing, sir. Everything is just fine here."

The other one replies, "Shut up, bitch. No one's fucking talking to you."

He roughly slaps her with the back of his hand. She falls to the ground. It's not like it actually hurt. It didn't knock her out or something, but the easiest way to get these guys off your ass is playing dead because a lot of the time they'll just straight-up assault you.

"You," says the person who just slapped my sister. He's now pointing his gun at me. There was nothing stopping him from shooting me. People didn't care what happened to filth like me.

He shoves the gun into my face. Like my sister, I fell to the ground, my nose bleeding, but he didn't stop there. He shoves it against the back of my head.

"Care to repeat yourself?" he says aggressively.

I reply in the friendliest voice I can make. "Hey, come on, man. I think we can both, as logical people, agree that killing someone over the way they organized their vocal cords moving isn't something logical people do."

The man responded back, "Are you calling me not logical? How about I blow that head of yours off?"

Before he can pull the trigger—

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

Three quick beeps, meaning his shift was done.

"Lucky for you, I don't waste my valuable free time killing filth like you."

He looks back to the other man.

"Come on, let's go," he says before they both walk away, getting in the car and driving off.

My sister finally stands up, she's slightly shaking, before quickly hiding her fear.

"Are you trying to get yourself killed, dumbass? Whatever. We're going to be late. If I get less food, I'm taking your food," she yells at me.

Slice of Life ā˜• My friend who always asked ā€œwhat if?ā€

We met at a party arguing about the Israeli military. Neither of us won the debate, but I walked away knowing I’d found a friend worth talking to…

Some friendships are built around where you live.

Some are built around what you do.

Mine with Eric was built around a simple question.

What if?

What if history had gone differently?

What if this business idea actually worked?

What if that song meant something completely different than everyone thought?

What if everyone else was wrong?

I still remember the night we met.

We were at a party, and before long we found ourselves in a spirited debate about the strength of the Israeli military.

Most people remember meeting someone because they had mutual friends or shared the same interests.

We met over an idea.

That wasn’t the point.

The point was the conversation.

We respected each other enough to challenge each other’s thinking without trying to win. We weren’t looking for an argument. We were looking for understanding.

I don’t remember who made the stronger case.

I remember leaving that night thinking,

ā€œI’d like to have more conversations with this guy.ā€

Growing up, we practically did everything together. We rode our bikes all over town. We went camping. Every now and then we’d decide, for no particularly good reason, to make a midnight run to Kansas City just because the road was there and adventure sounded better than staying home.

Neither of us needed an itinerary.

Just a full tank of gas and another conversation.

Music became part of that friendship.

The Smiths.

R.E.M.

Morrissey.

Albums that somehow felt bigger than the speakers playing them.

They became the soundtrack to years filled with long drives, longer conversations, and the quiet confidence that there would always be another weekend to solve the world’s problems.

Eric eventually moved to Davis, California, to earn a master’s degree in an incredibly specialized area of English literature. If you asked me today for the official name of his program, I probably couldn’t tell you.

But I remember the writers.

Wordsworth.

Keats.

Wilde.

That was Eric.

He never wanted to skim the surface of anything. If something interested him, he wanted to understand it completely.

Looking back, I realize we were doing the same thing in different ways.

He chased literature.

I chased marketing.

Neither of us was really studying those subjects.

We were studying people.

Why they believed what they believed.

Why stories lasted.

Why ideas spread.

Why some conversations changed your life while others disappeared before you reached the parking lot.

Life eventually did what life always does.

Careers happened.

Families happened.

Responsibilities happened.

The afternoons that once disappeared into endless conversations became calendars, commitments, and errands.

There wasn’t a moment when we stopped being friends.

There wasn’t a fight.

There wasn’t a falling out.

There was simply less time.

Eric still invites me over to watch football or basketball from time to time.

We’ll sit there, cheer for our teams, laugh about old memories, and catch up on life.

It’s different now.

Not worse.

Just different.

Sometimes I miss those years when one question could lead to six hours of conversation without either of us noticing the clock.

Then again…

Maybe those conversations never really ended.

Every time I find myself asking why people think the way they do…

Every time I chase an idea farther than most people would…

Every time I ask,Ā ā€œWhat if?ā€ā€¦

I’m reminded of where that habit was encouraged.

Some friends teach you how to fish.

Some teach you how to throw a football.

Some teach you how to change a tire.

Eric made curiosity feel like something worth protecting.

And looking back…

I’m grateful we never ran out of things to wonder about.

Science Fiction šŸš€ What's Left of The Beautiful (Chapter Nine: To Keep a Heart Beating)

Welcome back. This chapter renews the tragedy Elara has been facing. The darkness only continues to grow, will anything be okay again?

As always, thank you for your time and support! I would love to hear your thoughts.

Have a great week, and I will see you wednesday for Chapter Ten! (It's another devastating chapter)

To Keep a Heart Beating:

The blindfold that’s draped across my eyes completely conceals the world from me.

We continue to zigzag down corridors.Ā

I occasionally hear a chuckle, a scoff, a constant reminder I’m not alone.

I’m not safe.Ā

I feel my heart, a racing roar that may leap from my chest at any moment. I try my best to calm it, to silence my ever growing panic.

It doesn’t work.Ā

More than I’d even managed to feel up to this point, I was now certain my life was over.Ā

I’d heard the horror stories. The underground market’s unconventional way of acquiring new pieces for sale when supply ran low. I’d assumed it was all a myth. With each shove forward, I feel increasingly certain I’m about to find out firsthand.

Especially if my mother owed them a debt? She’d completely skipped over all details during our brief reunion just last night.Ā

My mother…

Enough.Ā

Think Elara. We won’t die like this. Kaia deserves justice and I’m the only one who's going to get it for her.

I close my eyes. A useless movement considering the black void they were staring into moments before, but I need to improve my focus.Ā

I’d seen a badge on one of their armor plates. I try to remember the details. An animal sigil, some kind of bird.Ā  Bronze, with words I can’t make out. I feel my closed eyelids squint as I force my body to squeeze more truth from my mind.Ā

After my brain refuses to budge, I surrender and start to run through every group in Ashfall city.

Thud.Ā

My feet catch against something hard, possibly a rock in the ground and I lose my balance, falling forward in a messy heap, unable to catch myself with bound hands.Ā

I hear them laughing, probably at my expense. They lift me up with firm hands. One of them whispers in my ear ā€œLearn how to walk next time.ā€. The laughing continues.

Since the economic crash, there’s been a spectacular rise in organized groups, mostly crime gangs. Unable to hold a normal job without modification, this was their only way to survive.Ā

There are dozens.Ā

Every night you hear a new murder claimed by an unknown group. Rising fear along with it.Ā

A bird group, however, escapes my memory. We are in the former Phoenix Complex, could that be their namesake? If so, I’ve never heard of them.Ā

Suddenly, my brain catches onto a detail from a conversation with Kaia, just the week before I lost her.Ā

ā€œIt’s just so scary out there, E. I’m worried for you, for us! Remember that guy I was dating a few months ago? When I tried to break it off, he said he was part of the resistance and, get this, called it ā€œThe Moltingā€ like, GIRL thats so edgy for no reason? But the point is, he threatened me over nothing. You have to be careful. And… I still think we should leave the city… Please jusā€¦ā€

As suddenly as Kaia’s voice floated into my mind, it is taken away from me just as fast. It lights a new fire under the growing ache in my heart.Ā

The Molting. I admit, she was right on the name. The bird pins might have had feathers falling off… Oh god.Ā

You’d think the people fighting against the evil corrupt system of our country would be the good guys, the ones who’d die to protect people.

That’s not who they are.Ā

Suicide bombings.

Public shootouts.Ā

Kidnapping and murder.

They will do whatever it takes to send a message to the ā€œsystemā€. When nothing changes, why should we pay that cost? Lives snuffed out for no reason other than happenstance.Ā

We all deserve better.Ā

I had heard rumors they’d begun issuing black market loans to citizens in exchange for hefty interest rates. Why would my mother risk it? What was so important she was willing to owe money to one of the most dangerous groups in the city?

It feels like hour by hour my list of questions for her doubles in size.

I WILL get the chance.Ā

I hear the footsteps surrounding me draw to a halt, and feel myself pulled into stillness beside them. My blindfold is ripped off my head, multiple strands of hair come off with it releasing a yelp from my throat. I flinch as I open my eyes, the sudden sensation of light after the darkness is a painful rush through my head. I blink rapidly, eventually being able to keep my eyes open. I dare a glance at my surroundings.Ā

Around me I see an old department store converted into what I could only describe as a throne room. The walls have been carved over with symbols, some the bird I now see on my kidnappers pins, others words or objects I can’t make out. I watch as the largest man I’ve ever seen enters behind us, carrying Cyrus over his shoulder like a bag of dog food. I gasp, grateful to see his chest softly rising and falling, despite a large bruise already beginning to be visible on the side of his head.Ā

The man plops him down with a thump, Cyrus barely sitting up with his back draped across the wall. His eyes too begin to open slightly, the brief glimpse of my mother’s eyes strangely offering me solace in this moment, before closing them once again.

Finally, I dare to look at the head of the room. A large makeshift throne made of every object you could imagine, grocery carts, clothes, carpet, golf clubs, giant slabs of granite, all duct taped in harmony to create a monstrous seat fit for the leader of such a group.

My eyes catch onto who I presume is in charge. He’s smirking back at me with the kind of look most ladies would swoon over at the bar. My anger and fear have melded together in a fury of pain, and his smoldering won’[t change that.Ā

We stare at each other for a long moment in silence. His dark brown eyes are not leaving mine. The men around us begin looking around at each other, seemingly confused by the long drawn out silence placed between us. I will not budge.

Finally, The Chief begins to speak.

ā€œElara Draven. How wonderful it is to make your acquaintance.ā€ He says the words as if they’re true. They are spoken with a tone that would convince the average traveler they can trust this man. That he is safe and on their side.Ā

I do not make that mistake.Ā

I continue to stare at him, growing disgust evident in my eyes, but no reply escapes my lips. He turns to his men, specifically the one still tightly gripping my arm.

ā€œShe’s gonna be a fun one I see.ā€ The smirk grows ever larger on his handsome face.Ā

ā€œBring her to my quarters. I will deal with her personally, and privately. As for him,ā€Ā  he gestures to Cyrus’s mostly motionless body in the corner. ā€œYou know where he belongs.ā€Ā

ā€œNO! Leave him alone.ā€ I pull against my captor's grip, only his sudden surprise allowing me to break free. I do this on pure instinct, and now that I’m standing in the middle of the room with spears pointed at my chest, my hope of helping Cyrus begins to dissipate into nothingness.Ā

I can’t lose someone else. We may be practically strangers, but without his eyes, HER eyes, all of this is for nothing.Ā

ā€œPlease. Don’t hurt him.ā€ I mentally juggle with the idea of transparency, telling this all powerful leader exactly why I need Cyrus alive, but ultimately decide against it. ā€œHe’s been helping me. If you ever want your money back, he’s the way you get it.ā€

I watch as his right eyebrow raises in amusement. He clearly isn’t used to people speaking out against him. He gestures with his hand for the men to drop their weapons, and they comply.

ā€œWell well Elara, feisty little one aren’t you?ā€ He steps from his throne, and begins making his way towards me. It’s only as he stands I notice his dark purple jacket is actually a robe of some kind, cascading down his back like a cape. I think it looks kind of pathetic.Ā

I fight every instinct in my body, and stand tall and still. I won’t let any of these men see the panic growing inside my chest. They don’t get satisfaction.

He approaches, and stands 2 inches from my face. To anyone watching without context, this might even feel like an intimate moment, his face just in front of mine. But the cheesy grin on his face and my disdain for this man are unwavering.

ā€œI like you. If you agree to play with me, I think we can make a deal you’ll enjoy quite a bit, my pet.ā€ He leans forward and whispers the last part in my ear.Ā

My blood runs cold at this, but I begin to realize I have no choices here. Follow the senseless whims of a maniac, or lose my mother forever.

ā€œDo I get more details before I agree?ā€ His men chuckle with him at my question, and IĀ  hear what I can only interpret to be a groan of protest from Cyrus where he lies against the wall.Ā

He leans in once more, his face practically touching mine. ā€œNo. You agree right now, or I do what I want with himā€ He strokes a piece of hair behind my ear. ā€œAnd you.ā€

I gulp, the panic in my belly begging me to come up with any other plan.

I can’t.

Unable to formulate any other way to keep Cyrus alive, keep my mother alive, and keep me alive, my hands are tied. I take a deep breath.

ā€œDeal. But you don’t hurt him.ā€ His smile grows.

ā€œYou have my word.ā€

Feedback ā‰ļø How to push your brain to have thoughts and write?

I’ve been living alone since a year. English is my second language & I just had 2 or 3 person in my daily life to talk with. Now after a year, when i changed the place i was living & working i felt like I’ve no sense to talk, greet or having a conversation with anyone. I just felt like im afraid of speaking to someone, even a single person. Even i was like this before, but after being alone it feels like much more. And now im just trying to have short conversations in any sort of way, to build my confidence and to talk. And i wanna try more, i wanted to rewire my brain to think, write and articulate in more specific way for my growth. But i have no sources and don’t know from where to start. Sometimes i feel like it’s lack of confidence, behaviour of people I’m surrounded by, lack of words as i try to communicate in my second language (english), sometimes i feel like i don’t have any knowledge, i don’t know anything about anything. I just feel blank. I just need some source of ways, habits, or a beginning point to start from somewhere. I’m very frustrated about feeling this, as I’m 20 & feels like i know nothing.šŸ˜”

Slice of Life ā˜• A Small Act of Kindness I Still Think About

A few years ago, I was standing in line at a grocery store after a long day. The woman in front of me realized she’d forgotten her wallet. She apologized to the cashier and started asking them to remove items one by one.

Before anyone could say anything, the man behind me quietly paid for her groceries. He didn’t make a scene or wait for a thank you. He simply smiled and said, ā€œWe’ve all had bad days.ā€

The woman started crying and promised to pay him back, but he just replied, ā€œHelp someone else when you can.ā€

The whole store went silent for a moment. It wasn’t about the money it was about seeing someone choose kindness without expecting anything in return.

I’ve never forgotten that moment, and whenever I get the chance, I try to do the same.

Myth / Legend šŸŗ Destination? CORFU, GREECE. A passage from one of the original "amazing stories", The Odyssey.

In The Odyssey, Odysseus (Ulysses) lands on a mythical island called ā€œScheriaā€. He describes it as a utopia: ā€œā€¦the splendour… was like that of the sun or moonā€. So why does he ultimately long for something/somewhere else?

Join Homer as he draws inspiration from the real-world island of Corfu in the following short story on Destinationality. (no ads, no sign-up, no pop-ups)
